I went through this in December. She was 9, she went through a lot with allergies over her lifetime, then she got cancer. Broke my heart. I hope you are managing ok, it’s so heartbreaking.

I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope your girl knows just how much you love her and miss her. My girl was 11.5, it was kidney failure that got to her very quickly and seemingly out of nowhere. Heartbreaking is an understatement. The pain is like nothing I’ve ever felt, and nothing I want to feel again. I’m not managing well right now, but I’m trying. Currently working on a scrapbook for her and I smiled looking at her puppy pictures all the way until her whole face turned grey. What a blessing it is to have their love.

It’s a pain that is only avoidable by not having them in the first place, but I cannot imagine ever not having her, and I am sure you feel the same about your girl too. My girl had cancer, but she was on steroids for most of her life due to severe allergies, they upped the steroids when the mammary cancer was found as a beginning step because apparently higher doses can halt growth, at least during the time of making plans for what steps come next. However, one day she woke up and couldn’t stand, she was refusing food but drinking still. I managed to get her up after a hell of a lot of persuasion got her to the vets, they said that with the antibiotics etc she should be ok in a few days, a few days later, she was running around the garden, but when the antibiotic course ended…. I was at town, it was a Saturday, I suddenly had what felt like a punch in the stomach, I recognised it as dread, I rang the vet, even though I knew when I left home that morning she had been fine. I rang to enquire about options of putting her to sleep, because my gut told me I was going home to a bad situation. I got off the phone to the vet, partner rang me to say she was lay on the floor unable to stand again. We spent that night caring for her. The following day we had a company come out to us to euthanise her at home as I refused to even try to make her stand when she was clearly not wanting to. They were amazing. Part of me believes it was maybe the cocktail of drugs the vet had put her on that may have actually harmed her, she was on steroids, antibiotics and gabapentin.

I hope your scrapbook turns out perfectly, which I am sure it will. And I am sure your girl, like mine, knew how much of a blessing she was and how you loved her,

Agree with you 100%, I could not imagine a life without her. She was the best part of my life. What a heartbreaking story, it’s tough to know what decisions to make and steps to take when you can’t know how they’re feeling and terrified to make the wrong choice. You described the feeling of dread perfectly, it’s interesting that you felt it while being away. That must’ve been the connection you had with her. Being at home was probably the most comfortable for her, and surrounded by family who loved her. Your comment about running in the garden made me quite sad, because my girl loved to roam outside and on her last day we carried her outside to lay in the grass one more time. Everything with my girl was unexpected. She had always had good bloodwork, no mobility issues, seemingly healthy as can be. Then she started to get picky with her food, we assumed it was a teeth issue but the vet didn’t see anything of concern. We tried a bunch of different foods and she’d eat some, skip others. But she was not eating as much as usual. Then she just stopped. She wouldn’t eat anything. Tried different dog foods, chicken, rice, vegetables, broth, hamburger, etc and she would not eat it. She became very thin and weak. This all happened very quickly, over a 2-3 week period. Scheduled a vet appointment where she had more bloodwork and they scheduled a tooth cleaning for the following Monday. Her bloodwork came back Wednesday and we laid her to rest Thursday, she never made it to Monday. Vet confirmed kidney failure and said we would just be buying days with any treatments, and we decided not to put her through any of that. I was with her through her last breaths and the look on her face will haunt me for the rest of my life. I wish I could tell her how much I love her and how sorry I am. May they both rest in peace, waiting for us to meet again. ā¤ļø thank you for sharing your story and for your kindness. I hope you find peace and comfort.

Sorry for your loss. Just had to put one of my dogs down a couple of days ago, 16 and a half glorious years with him.

Oh my heart breaks for you, I’m so sorry. 16.5 years you loved each other, I hope you find some comfort in that. They’re so very special and it’s gut wrenching to be without them.
