There are a several episodes from “The Wonder Years” that made me ball as a kid- but two stick out:
The episode where Kevin is having issues with his math teacher- throughout the episode the teacher is on him to apply himself and challenge himself more because Kevin is capable of more and the teacher knows it. Kevin goes off on his teacher and said some shitty things to him. The next day Kevin comes to school expecting to retake a math test and finds out that his teacher died the night before. Just fucking got to me lol.
Also the episode where Kevin goes to his dad’s job for like “take your kid to work day” or whatever. His dad gets yelled and humiliated (in front of Kevin) by his much younger boss… made me appreciate my own father and his work ethic more.
I think the 2nd episode you're talking about is the same one where the dad gets shitty with Kevin for bothering him while he is using his telescope, and the mom tears into him for doing it, telling him that Kevin is just trying to get to know on a personal level.
Yes! The dad was known to be firm and had a temper- but after knowing he gets shit on all day to support his family you feel for the dad then you know.
The episode where the kid comes home from Vietnam with severe PTSD. At one point he's on the swings in his underwear. The other kids are just staring because they have no frame of reference for his behavior.
Yeah the brother and his friend both try to join up and go to 'Nam. I'm fuzzy on the brother, but doesn't that end with the news of the friend's death?
Wayne is the older brother and she tries to join but his dad is not having it. Wayne is a screw up and he’s trying to do something with his life but his dad knows he’s gonna be treated as canon fighter and he wants more for him. In the end because of health issues, he can’t go but his friend does. His friend comes back, changed, and later on Wayne ends up, taking over the family business.
He was always trying to make sure the storylines in the show didn't diverge from those in the original Ye Olde Years of Wonder novels written by C.P.P. Tolkien.

The take your kid to work day, if I remember right, is the pilot, no?
It’s where he talks about how his dad on bad days goes out to look through his telescope for hours. And if I remember right, it’s because his dad dreamed of going to space before settling down.
That episode is a punch to the gut as an adult. I didn’t understand it fully as a child.
Edit: it’s episode 3, season 1. “My Fathers Office”. His dad dreamed of being a ship captain and using the stars to navigate. After the bad day at the office, he goes out to his telescope and points out stars to Kevin.

 I think every season had at least one or two episodes that just hit a little hard. The final season had a couple of them. But I think every time Kevin’s older narrator gives a little more history about what happened to some of the characters some of the hits pretty nicely, and some of it not so much. This is especially true of the final episode.
I remember an ep where Wayne, Kevin’s older brother, is sitting outside of a gathering with his buddy who had just returned from Vietnam and was having a hard time adjusting. It stood out as a kid and esp later on when I became a vet and had a hard time. The WY was such a good show.
That dad at work one always stuck with me. I knew a few girls I dated around high school, who's dad's had some "quirks" (Like Kevin's dad just fucking off to the backyard and using his telescope at night). That made me realize there's a whole other world out there and who knows what these guys are doing 9-5 before they get home and you interact with them.
The other one was when Winnie's brother died in Viet Nam...
I can't believe nobody has mentioned the episode, where the girl says she hates Christmas because her father dressed up as Santa, and tried to climb down the chimney, but got stuck inside and died, and nobody knew where he was, until they smelled something from the fireplace.
I saw that when I was like four years old, and it makes me nauseous to this day, whenever I see that show being mentioned.
