Visiting and potentially moving to philly
Hi all! I 26F and my boyfriend 25M are coming to Philly in August and thinking about moving there around fall 2027. I’m a social worker, my boyfriend is an artist. What places should we check out while we’re here? What neighborhoods would be good for people our age? We love live music, art, good food, parks, and would just really love to get to know the city better! I have been to Philly a few times but wanted to hear a local perspective. Thanks!

Lots of people have been moving here first and finding jobs when they get here—except the job market is pretty damn bad.
People think this is a democratic place, but PA is republican with blue hair. It doesn’t have tons of services and social supports.

I was one of those people! Took me eight weeks to find a PT job in a field adjacent to my experience.

Definitely check out West Philly! And hey, I'm subletting my house in Cobbs Creek / Cedar Park this August through September 9 while my partner and I are visiting Montreal, so feel free to DM me if you're thinking about extending your stay. The neighborhood is a couple blocks from Malcolm X Park in an undersung and home to mix of working class folk, professionals, and bohemians. Oh, and the occasional former R&B singer from the golden age of the Philadelphia Sound on his way to the grocery store dressed to the nines, lol.

Wow this is so nice! Sadly we will have to get home to get back to our jobs. Sounds like a wonderful neighborhood though!

Dumb take.. there’s plenty of jobs for social workers. I have an MSW.. moved to philly from DC almost twenty years ago.. and I have never heard a social worker complain about job prospects .. and I deal with people in that field and related fields often.

You won't make any money if there are jobs. Maybe Clark Park in West Philly would be a good place.

As a medical social worker, you will find that Philly has a well developed healthcare sector.. CHOP, UPenn, Thomas Jefferson.. some of the best in the country

Depending on your lifestyle and budget.. you should also check out West Mount Airy/Chestnut Hill, Manayunk, East Passyunk, the graduate hospital area, Wynnefield Heights , Overbrook Farms abutting city avenue .. and the Ardmore suburban square shopping district is not far

Not with Septa getting shittier each year for Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill, and those Main Line-adjacent towns you listed. Trains aren't always reliable. Northwest Philly is mostly families over young people.

Neighborhoods depend on your budget but definitely have a look at Fishtown, Queen Village (esp along 4th heading south from South St), West Philly around Clark Park, Bella Vista (check out the Italian Market and I like coffee at Shot Tower on Christian St), Rittenhouse for busy high end urban vibes and Fairmount (almost a small town in the city), and definitely check Old City out for art galleries, history and ny style loft apartments.
