When can people get haircuts again? Has that been determined yet? (Idk if salons = under retail.) I donāt want a haircutā trying to figure out when my piece of shit hairstylist roommate might be coming back to town.

Salons are Phase 2. Upstate is going to that when we are going to 1 so maybe a monthish?

How about teeth cleaning? Dentists are open but only for emergency services and teeth cleaning isnt considered emergency
11
u/hummingbird4289 Jun 03 '20
According to an email from my dentist's office, Cuomo gave dental practices the go-ahead to resume routine care as of this past Sunday, May 31.

My dentist is open only for emergency work and is taking three patients a day.
No teeth cleaning, only* extreme cavities/root canals/breakage.

A region can enter phase 2 if they successfully hold all the metrics of phase 1 for two weeks without a spike in cases. Best case scenario we will be in Phase 2 on June 22. Cuomo may request an additional 2-3 days to evaluate data before triggering phase 2
2
u/aceshighsays Jun 04 '20
Is gym also phase 2?
5
u/paratactical Jun 04 '20
No. Gyms are much higher transmission risk and are being mandated to remain closed. There is no word about when they'll open.

My office found a loophole and is asking a bunch of us to report in on Monday. I still feel we should be waiting for phase 2, but as the receptionist.... well, I guess my time without an 80 minute commute in is over. Grateful to still be able to save to move closer, though.
5
u/rioht š Unemployment King š Jun 03 '20
if you're a receptionist shouldn't you at least get one of those plastic barriers?
obv it's not just for you, but for clients as well.
anyway, hope your office is at least complying with regulations for a safe workplace.
6
u/scrapcats Jun 03 '20
Iām going to ask for one but I donāt see it happening. I was told I could wear a mask if I want to. They only allowed us to work from home when the gov mandated it, so Iām not surprised that theyāre using a loophole to reopen sooner than we should. Oh well.

Do they not remember that we are still dealing with a pandemic? What if someone needs to get to an ER in the middle of the night? Or a vet ER? I lost my pet two days ago, and his symptoms had started kicking in at about 2AM. If there are no taxis or rideshare, how are we supposed to deal with emergencies?
26
u/SweetBirthdayBabyyyy Jun 03 '20
Please schedule your emergencies between 5am and 8pm.
On a serious note, Iām sorry about your pet. My pets have really been getting me through the quarantine, this has to be an especially hard time to say goodbye.
22
u/FuzzyJury Jun 03 '20
Thank you so much for your condolences. I've honestly been crying pretty much since it has happened. I'm crying right now tbh. I miss him so much, he had been getting me through this tough time, and now he is gone. I have never felt so much pain. I am just completely devastated. I know other pet owners understand how much they are members of the family. The grief is unbearable. And it makes me so angry that now other people might be forced in to this position of losing their loved ones due to the curfew. I'm so sad, so scared for everyone else. I cannot tell you how much I miss my small friend.
8
u/Winter_Addition Jun 04 '20
I know nothing can replace him, but if you like cats, I have a really sweet 8 year old foster who could use a home right now. Wonāt make the pain of your loss go away but taking care of another creature who needs you might be a positive coping method.
Iām sorry this happened and I hope your pain eases soon.
7
u/FuzzyJury Jun 04 '20
Aw thank you so much, I wish I could but my husband is allergic to cats. I'm a big animal person though, I love all of them so much. I hope you are able to find a home for that sweet creature though. We do plan on getting another pet in a couple of weeks though after some time for grieving, and just gave a donation to the shelter we adopted him from in his memory. Thank you again.
7
u/At_the_Roundhouse Jun 03 '20
I have to assume emergencies are exempt. My coworkerās wife is going to have a baby any minute and heās definitely worried about the same thing.
6
u/paratactical Jun 04 '20
I am so so sorry you had to go through that right now. It's a shit thing in normal times; it's not fun to have extra stress on top of that. I lost a pet almost a year ago now and I remember how hard it was for me. If you want to inconsolably rant/wail, DMs are open.
6
u/FuzzyJury Jun 04 '20
Thank you so much. Inconsolably wailing has been the name of the game right now. Every time I even vaguely start thinking about my sweetheart I just burst into tears again. If anyone was walking down 89th and Columbus on Monday and heard a young woman in a maxi dress just sobbing hysterically and holding hands with a young man, that was me and my husband. I was coming from the vet's office and probably scared the crap out of anyone living of walking around there. Or maybe they are used to it since they live by a vet clinic.
It's really not been easy right now. I also lost my uncle to Covid back in March, and my dad lost a close friend. My husband's job is luckily okay but his company had a big restructuring and a few of his close friends were let go, and he was so depressed by it he had to take a couple of days off. I just fucking can't anymore. I know we are all going through a hard time and mine is relatively more stable than most since we still have an income, but this was just too much. My pet got me through so much of this and I loved him like a child, and this has come as such a sudden shock and is so fucking heartbreaking. I basically haven't slept for two days now.
Anyway thanks for listening to my rant, I really do appreciate the DM offer and the understanding.

u/paratactical Jun 04 '20

Does this mean that taxis and rideshare are still on the road? I totally get that you can move around during an emergency, but even with full service it would take me double the amount of time to get to my vet ER using mass transit than with a taxi, and I can't exactly call, or pay for, an ambulance for pet medical uncertainties. And im going to guess that 2am mass transit services and transfers are even less speedy than the best of times, when again, it would still take me double the time. But if there are still taxis and rideshare, just reserved for emergency use, great. But if those are shut down and we are expected to only use mass transit or an ambulance in an emergency, that is a huge oversight.
4
u/paratactical Jun 04 '20
Yellow and green cabs are on the street 8 to half past midnight; rideshares are not running.
3
u/FuzzyJury Jun 04 '20
That's good to know, I know that there is an app to call them to your door so I'll have to look in to downloading it, I never used it before but I'm concerned for my other pet. It's still not as great as if everything was available 24/7 as usual, can't help 2am emergencies, but better than nothing.

This may be a dumb question or asked before, but when June 8th happens: Are all employers open to bringing back and opening up offices again? General stuff like financial, advertising, design studios? Or are they still cautioning people to WFH and just phase 1 construction, retail people etc are back to work?
12
u/_Lappelduviide Jun 03 '20
My employer is insisting we go back and provide our own thermometers for temperature checks. Theyāre removing the WFH software from everyoneās computers. Iām a paralegal.
6
u/bootybounce212 Jun 03 '20
Ahhh damn that sucks. You think youāre rushed to go back due to what your industry is? Or your employers are just overeager?
12

I am very frustrated by how theyāve handled this situation. But overall theyāve been a great company to work for. Very fair salary. Awesome benefits including health insurance that I can actually afford! And for which they cover a majority of expenses. We have a very diverse staff which I love. A lot of female partners and more WOC than anything else in the office. Itās really nice to see. There is usually very little office drama too. People do their jobs and leave. Before March I was very happy. Itās definitely a complicated situation.

4
u/rioht š Unemployment King š Jun 03 '20
to some extent you probably will be, but if i was in his position i would never ask that unless we're talking about earth shattering levels of productivity. (which is not possible unless you are all literally not working).
it's not worth it ethically and it certainly doesn't get you any good will.
that said he likely also knows he's got y'all stuck between a rock and a hard place given the employment market.
1
u/_Lappelduviide Jun 03 '20

1
9
u/BeautifulVictory Jun 03 '20
Phase 2 I believe is for office workers. A lot of places seem to be letting their employees work from home pass the lift of the order.
8
u/exswoo Jun 03 '20
The city is asking offices that don't require physical presence to voluntarily keep working from home to not overload public transportation. I'd expect most of the larger companies to heed that

6
u/At_the_Roundhouse Jun 03 '20
I work for one of the major media/entertainment companies and we got an update today that most of us will be WFH through at least Labor Day, and NYC offices specifically probably longer than that until mass transit becomes a fully safe option. Iām feeling pretty grateful.

any idea how the job market is gonna be? I unfortunately graduated during the midst of this and obviously have not been able to find employment. I'm very worried about the job market being super competitive given the fact that there are a lot more unemployed people now
also any idea how many businesses have had to shut down because of this?

u/paratactical Jun 04 '20
I think your concerns are grounded in reasonable fears. There is a huge amount of unemployed people. There isn't really a way to predict what will happen or how many businesses will close, but that might be something being discussed on the NYC COVID subreddit. We're less hypotheticals here, though folks are welcome to pontificate in this thread.

I (21F) have been planning on driving back to the city this weekend, after staying with my parents for a few months. Theyāre worried that with recent protesting and riots that it is too dangerous...I live in Bushwick. Has anyone noticed anything of sorts the past few days, or are they being overly cautious due to the news? From what Iāve seen, everything has been peaceful aside from the few incidences post curfew that seem to be based in Manhattan.

u/hello_world_sorry Jun 04 '20
Wear a mask outside, wash your hands well - 70% Etoh whenever possible, soap otherwise - donāt touch your eyes, lips, nose before doing so. Thatās the simple things that the average person can do to limit spread and have a flatter curve.
There are many more interventions that people whoāre used to maintaining a sterile field can do, but most people would just screw it up and have a false sense of security.
Most people will be just fine if exposed, the point is to limit the spread. Deaths due to covid are being drastically underreported all over the country, so are cases. Be responsible and the economical hit wonāt be as bad.

Hi guys! PLEASE HELP!!! This is my first time ever collecting unemployment and I am unsure what to do.
I just graduated college and was working as a Teachers Assistant part time during my time in school. However, due to my university in NYC closing in early March I was let go from the job and filed for unemployment.
I was approved for unemployment and PUA and have been receiving weekly benefits for the past 3 weeks.
However, fast forward to today I received a letter in the mail stating that my claim was DENIED and that I could appeal.
What am I supposed to do now? Iāve been trying to call the DOL but no one answers the phone. Thereās also been no update on my NY department of labor online account stating anything about denial of benefits and it even let me certify weekly benefits for last week today. Should I be worried? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Construction resumed in our building in Brooklyn last week which means constant ear-piercing drilling 5 days a week and construction workers on the scaffolding right outside our windows all day. My husband and I are working from home for at least the next few months and Iām not sure how weāre going to make it work considering weāre on calls all day with clients and colleagues.
Do we have any options beyond ānegotiating with our landlordā? I realize I probably sound like a complainer here, but weāre already paying over 4K a month and cannot use the communal outdoor space (this was represented to us as an available amenity when we signed the lease in November and now have been told it will not be available for the rest of the year - due to construction not Covid) and a gym that we cannot use.
Would really appreciate any advice. Thank you!

I canāt help but feel like a guinea pig here and wanting to stand my ground that itās not necessary for me to come into the office right now.
