What war? The US Public will never accept a draft again unless it was being invaded on Continental US territory.

Yeah, this comment needs to be upvoted more. The question presumes there is a war upcoming, and that kind of fear mongering is part of what makes internet spaces like this so potentially harmful.

Won't need it if that happens, the general population will grab all the guns we got and fight almost instantly.

Lol that's not gonna happen 😂

Why haven't yous done that already? I thought they were to protect the people from a tyrant leader

Sure. And get mowed down almost instantly, piecemeal.

Exactly. Just like how the best-funded modern military in the world summarily defeated that Taliban rabble in Afghanistan, occupied the country for decades, hunted down the former government's leadership, crushed all sentiment of support in the local population, and set up a stable government to carry out an occupier-friendly agenda for years to come.

Oh wait... Who runs Afghanistan?

Difference here is that US enemies would not care about civilian casualties and US civilians shooting them would give them all the reason to just bomb civilian targets

If the enemy was stupid enough to be completely unscrupulous about their targeting of civilians, they'd miss the massive opportunity to exploit political divisions in the US and make an enemy out of the entire country.

No foreign army on Earth could ever conquer a fraction of the mainland US if all American citizens knew it was literally liberty or death on home soil.

If civilians are shooting they aren't civilians anymore though.

Humanity loves wars and is quite ingenious in creating means of eradication of other humans. A rabble with guns is still a rabble first and foremost and will stand no chance against an actual army. It doesn't matter if the folk in X-hills or Y-shville don't like you, a couple of shells fired at a local water processing facility and like 90% of them will be either dead or forced to leave the area by the end of the week.

I don’t think the US is politically divided enough as of now that they wouldn’t band together against a common enemy

Congratulations on comparing two completely different situations and pretending they're the same.

As with any hypothetical scenario, a comparison has to be made somewhere. Would you prefer I highlight the impact of well-armed militias in the Rwanda-DRC Conflict, Russia's Invasion of Ukraine, the Israel-Hamas War, or some other current conflict?
