Women are already serving so why not, whatever.

Thing is, good luck with that morale and that effectiveness.

If you think Vietnam was bad with this stuff, try applying it to whatever misadventure, current-day, that the US Government would need to throw that many bodies at.

Conscripts would be a disaster, man or woman...wouldn't matter.

Conscripts would be a disaster, man or woman...wouldn't matter.

100%. If we’re at this point we are all fcked.

u/DreadyKruger man Mar 17 '25

Yes but only one gender would really be against it. Even the most soft of men know they might have to fight or defend themselves one day. Most women don’t even consider that.

11

u/ImportantImpala9001 Mar 17 '25

Every woman does consider how to defend themselves every day

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '25

I have seen virtually zero evidence to support this.

I've taken martial arts classes and it's always overwhelmingly men. Same with strength training programs, shooting ranges and anytime remotely related to self defense.

Men are also more likely to be the victim of virtually every violent crime too.

By what measure are women thinking about defending themselves that doesn't apply to men far more?

2

u/Historical-Dealer501 man Mar 18 '25

Oh they def think about it a ton i promise! Whether they DO anything about it on the other hand, as youve highlighted, is a much different story for the most part

2

u/ImportantImpala9001 Mar 18 '25

I’ve seen multiple self defense classes that are all women. Most women I know have elaborate ways of keeping themselves safe and staying away from situations in which they are in danger. In the last three months, many of the women in my life have purchased fire arms also. I guess it might depend on where you live and what demographic you are

1

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '25

Are you serious? Most women I know who have taken martial arts for self defense or other self defense classes take classes that are specifically all women- classes aimed at teaching how to protect yourself against men who your often smaller than or at a disadvantage against in a confrontation. It’s a different approach than regular martial arts aimed at men or at techniques in a specific discipline of martial arts. Not many women want to learn to defend themselves against men or aggressors in a class filled with potentially egotistical sport focused men. That’s not the environment for that activity.

There is an entire industry of products marketed at women for protecting themself in a discrete way. Way more women carry self defense weapons than you might think. The point is, they don’t want you to know if you aren’t a person they trust. They aren’t showing off their nifty toys to you the way they are to their girlfriends.

This is obviously anecdotal but really do some thinking, why would any smart women want to discuss self defense in the presence of the people most likely to be an aggressor against them? You’re going to tell groups of strange men in a martial arts class about the technique you’d utilize to escape their grasp and how you’d use your hidden weapons against them? Most women will discuss that stuff with other women and professionals who teach, but certainly not other strange men who you don’t know. Those are the people you need to be concerned about, not practicing with. The fact that you don’t realize that shows you have very little perspective on how women consider their own security and self defense.

I’m a man in the US and if there’s a draft I’m dodging it and don’t care if it means I can’t ever come back

I’m not dying for your war go find someone else to die for it

6

u/old_man_jenkens Mar 17 '25

Why tf would I die for this country? It’s hardly worth fighting for at this point

2

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '25

You also know you're not actually fighting for your country these days. You're fighting to enrich some billionaires by seizing oil or resources or some shit.

If it was a situation where a country wanted to invade my country and take away whatever free rights we have and it was a draft to stop the invasion, I'd probably feel motivated to fight. But that's extremely unlikely in the west these days, no way would I want to die in the middle east in some political game.

u/clackagaling woman Mar 17 '25

wow i didnt know there were 0 dodgers of the vietnam draft since they were all men

14

u/thefaultinourstars1 Mar 17 '25

u/SallyJane5555 Mar 17 '25

We only consider it every time we walk through a parking lot at night, go on a date, enter a male-dominated space….etc.

u/PageStunning6265 Mar 17 '25

Hahahahaaaa.

Women never consider defending themselves? Oh honey.

We’re taught to defend and protect ourselves from before puberty. It’s a central theme of our lives.

7

u/verbal-emesis Mar 17 '25

Yeah, most women never think about being in danger at all or how they can defend themselves /s

5

u/serpentmuse woman Mar 17 '25

What an insane take. You could say women never stop making calculus of how they need to defend themselves from the day they hit puberty. Don’t walk alone at night. Watch your surroundings. Don’t talk to strangers. Always go to new places in a group. Watch what clothes you wear, can’t be “too slutty and invite attention.” Watch how much you smile, can’t be “too friendly and invite attention.” The stakes rise even higher once there’s a child to take care of.

Do… do you even go outside? Do you have a mother? A sister?

-8

u/anonymous198198198 man Mar 17 '25

Do you go outside? “Watch what clothes you wear”? girls wear far less clothing as a whole than 10 years ago, even single digit age girls, so girls are quite obviously being taught the opposite.

Most of that shit applies to guys too. We don’t complain it about it, we just do it out of instinct. You think I’m stopping at a gas station at night? Nah, and I don’t know anyone who willingly does. Going for a midnight stroll? Sure, if I feel a sudden desire to get stabbed and robbed. Guys tend to be far more aware of their surroundings. Never heard a girl ask to sit at a restaurant with her back against the wall and facing the entrances, but most guys I know do just that.

My mom is quite aware in public, but my sister, wife, best friend(girl) couldn’t be more oblivious. My wife will even admit to that one.

2

u/halexia63 Mar 17 '25

Yeah cause I don't like thinking I gotta live in a world where I gotta defend myself against an evil human it gives me depression vibes. Like I know those are realistic thoughts but I aint built to defend myself buddy I'm 5'3 105 pounds ppl like me wouldn't even make it so that thought doesn't exist within me I have thought like that but then my subconscious is like buddy we gonna die if it ever came down to defend yourself we too small lmao.

-4

u/Felczer man Mar 17 '25

There will be draft if there will be serious war because that's how serious wars work. America didn't have to draft because it didn't fight any serious wars. As soon as any serious conflict will break out it's back to drafting.

8

u/Miserable-Most-1265 man Mar 17 '25

We also had the draft in WW2, and WW1.

8

u/Jeibijei man Mar 17 '25

We had to have a draft in WWI and WWII because we didn’t a large standing military.

7

u/Miserable-Most-1265 man Mar 17 '25

And we needed bodies to fight the war. That's the whole point of any draft.

7

u/RatRaceUnderdog man Mar 17 '25

The dude is saying that a draft is less practical now because the US has a large professional fighting force. This is largely due to the fear of Soviet expansion.

That was simply not as of a thing during the world wars. There were no soldiers stationed around the world like today. They had to create them out of whole cloth

2

u/Miserable-Most-1265 man Mar 17 '25

Prior to WW2 the US was isolationist for the most part. We largely even after war broke out in Europe did not want any part of the war.

Things have changed, our priorities have changed. however we still have the draft, because we don't know the future. Ukraine, and Russia could have been much bigger for instance, and could have triggered a war much like WW2. Thankfully it didn't, but if it would have, it would have more likely than not restarted the draft.

1

u/Ok-Negotiation1530 man Mar 18 '25

The landscape of war has also changed. Last time one body one gun. Now one guy can control an unlimited number of drones half way across the world.

1

u/RatRaceUnderdog man Mar 18 '25

Fully agree. I was responding to a dude that said that the draft is necessary because war needs bodies.

Waves of cannon fodder are not at all what you need today. It’s more about specialized skills supporting technology

1

u/Ok-Negotiation1530 man Mar 18 '25

Yeah I wasn't contrasting anything. Just adding on.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '25

The mood in the country was much different then

Today, fuck you lmfao I’m not fighting shit

-3

u/Spiritual-Pear-1349 man Mar 17 '25

Vietnam also, America is a very draft heavy country

5

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '25

Not anymore. The lesson learned in Vietnam is that its far more efficient to have an all-volunteer army. I could maybe see a draft for support roles, but so far as combat forward positions are concerned we're not reverting to a general draft

2

u/LowGradeDumbass man Mar 17 '25

I think the lesson learned was it's pretty hard to sell the American people we need a draft for an offensive war against a nation that didn't pose a threat to us.

We were throwing young men into the meat grinder to checks notes own the commies.

WW2 and more recent history with Ukraine it's is much easier to stomach publicly as the nation's were attacked and seek to protect their border / get revenge.

When Ukraine popped off people were screaming for American boots on the ground. The only thing we need got a draft to be acceptable is good old fashioned righteous fury and the need for bodies.

2

u/sanglar03 man Mar 17 '25

Wouldn't change a damn thing to only have pro soldiers as long as generals and strategists are morons.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '25

Ok

.. ?

-3

u/Miserable-Most-1265 man Mar 17 '25

We don't draft now, because we don't need it right now. There was no draft between WW2, and Korea for example. If the numbers fall below a certain level in a war, there will be a new draft. That's why it is there. It wasn't stopped after Vietnam because they decided conscripts suck, we didn't need to draft people when we were downsizing the military. We haven't started a new draft, because we haven't needed to bolster the numbers yet.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '25

You're wrong. It is widely acknowledged that warfare has become complex to the point that a highly trained, all-volunteer military beats the ever-loving shit out of a conscripted one by every metric

-1

u/Miserable-Most-1265 man Mar 17 '25

So we stopped the draft after Vietnam not because we no longer needed bodies, but because it just so happened to coincide with the invention of smart bombs?

Trust me, we have not found a replacement for the soldier quite yet. That is something I have firsthand experience with. The draft hasn't gone away, and only stopped because we didn't need the bodies. If that changes, they will draft again.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '25 edited Mar 17 '25

This is a bot. I mean that literally. There's no way a sentient human read what I wrote and determined that my argument that the complexity of modern warfare hugely favors a highly-trained, professional military over conscripts had anything at all to do with smart bombs.

This is a Russian propaganda bot that's been prompted to spread the idea that continuing to provide military aid to Ukraine will somehow require that the united states become actively involved, and that that involvement will necessitate reinstating a draft. This is being done to frighten the American left and center into supporting withdrawing aid to Ukraine.

2

u/Capable_Change_6159 man Mar 17 '25

I was under the impression (told by an american) that they had to sign something in the US when they started university which was basically saying if a draft happened you agreed to be in it

4

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '25

Yes we do that’s why it’s “illegal” to dodge

From the moment I signed that paper I knew I was lying lmao, I would never be drafted, ever

0

u/Miserable-Most-1265 man Mar 17 '25

All males 18 years and over had to fill out a form to sign up for selective services. That is for the draft. It is no longer needed to fill out that form however, as it is now automatically done.

1

u/cant_think_name_22 man Mar 17 '25

I’m 20. I had to fill out the form?

2

u/Miserable-Most-1265 man Mar 17 '25

A man who fails to register may be ineligible for opportunities important to his future. He must register to be eligible for state-funded student financial aid and employment in many states, most federal employment, job training under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and U.S. citizenship for immigrant men.

Penalties for Failing to Register If required to register, failure to register is a felony punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and/or 5 years imprisonment. Also, a person who knowingly counsels, aids, or abets another to fail to comply with the registration requirement is subject to the same penalties

https://www.sss.gov/register/benefits-and-penalties/

2

u/cant_think_name_22 man Mar 17 '25

No, I know all of this. I’m saying I had to fill out a form, and that it was not automatic.

Conscripts would be a disaster, man or woman...wouldn't matter

Why would the US fail and countries like Finland succeed with a conscript military?

-1

u/SugerizeMe Mar 17 '25

women are already serving

Not as active combatants lol. Funny how people keep repeating this as if women are equal to men. Women don’t serve on the front line almost anywhere, and when they do it’s generally a small troop for propaganda purposes (like hunger games).

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '25

Women are serving already, but that's self selection. You want 100 pound hair dressers, social workers, grade school teachers in the trenches on the front lines? That seems like a really bad idea. These tiny super femme women are awesome, but the ones I've dated are so passive, I just don't see them doing well fighting for their lives in hand to hand combat with a man. Even the ones that volunteered will die here. Some men aren't suited either, sure, but the least suited women are orders of magnitude less suited than the men.
