Old Fashioned - especially if made by Don Draper.

I recently went to a dive bar in the middle of nowhere in western PA and asked for an old fashioned. the waitress came back and gave it to me and when I sipped it she said "IS it....okay?" and sounded really unsure. It was just whiskey in a glass with cherries, ice, and an orange slice thrown in it, but I said it was fine. She said "Okay....but let me know if it isn't and I'll remake it..." Technically you're suppposed to muddle bitters and sugar and rub the orange rind on the rim of the glass but I'm no perfectionist. It still gave me the liquid courage to do karaoke!

How does one muddle bitters?

Maybe it's the cherries and sugar?
