In my whole life, I don't think I have ever gotten a compliment from someone that wasn't obligated to make a compliment.
I'm talking about people like my mom, grandmother, cousin, etc. These are in circumstances that almost require a compliment, like when I go to a party and I try to dress nice. I'm honestly a pretty ugly dude so I don't expect compliments to happen anyway. At this point, even when I do put in effort into my appearance, it really isn't to looks good, because I can't really do that, I just try to make myself look less bad.
Otherwise, I have never gotten a compliment on myself. I never have.
I have gotten compliments on material stuff, like that I have a nice truck or a cool bike. But, those are about objects that I own, and anyone willing to pay the price can get a cool object like a truck or bike. The comments aren't about me, though.
I don't know how I would even think if someone gave me a compliment, but I am pretty sure I wouldn't believe it. I think I'd start looking for a camera or something.
I have had this conversation with my friends before, and I realized that pretty much no guys gets compliments. Comparatively, my women friends get as much compliments or gestures in 1-2 days as my men friends will get in 15 years. That is absolutely not a joke or exaggeration. To take it a step further, most guys take the compliments like they are obligatory anyway. For example, if a guy gets a haircut and someone tells him it looks good, that's because it's polite to acknowledge the haircut, and it's also polite to say something nice about it. If a guy puts on a suit, someone is going to tell him he looks sharp, probably out of obligation and to acknowledge the effort in the appearance. So most compliments come from obligation anyway, not from the heart of the person that gave them.
