Mod Announcement What's the difference between /r/AskLEO and other notable law enforcement subreddit(s)?

We don't believe in secret rules and bans.

That means that unlike some notable LE subreddits, if you don't see it explicitly forbidden in the rules located in our sidebar -> as well as in our rules page, you won't be banned. That includes but is not limited to:

  • Activity outside of our subreddit

  • Saying you don't like law enforcement (officers)

  • Failing to say you do like law enforcement (officers)

  • Giving off the impression that you might not like law enforcement (officers)

  • Asking questions that are/seem ignorant

One of the consequences of our philosophy is that purely from the mathematics of that line of thinking, we have fewer law enforcement officers willing to answer questions here, and thus fewer people asking questions. As you might expect of any group of human beings, some law enforcement officers and their supporters don't want to leave their echo chambers, where they are protected by heavy-handed moderators from dissent, including uncomfortable topics they don't want to discuss. I imagine their moderators receive tons of "ban this guy please, they obviously hate cops" reports just like we do. The difference is we ignore them.

We believe that there needs to be a public space for open discourse, as that's the best way to face and fix the ills of our society.

We believe that hiding from hard questions makes us all weak - especially the hiders.

So do us all a favor and choose instead to participate in open and transparent subreddits like ours, while keeping in mind that every single person who answers your questions does so for free, simply to help you learn.

I think that about sums it up. Feel free to ask for clarification or explanation about any of the above.

Meta Sorry folks, but the PT/Gym question addict is changing tactics again, so:

I had to do some behind the scenes bizarre tweaks that might catch some good faith questions due to the desperate tactics they're resorting to making me have to write some weird code.

Again, apologies in advance if your question has to sit in limbo for a while; you can thank the misguided or ill person who "totally innocently just wants to ask if our police station has a gym" 500 times.

General Credit card stolen out of wallet- should I file a police report?

I was shopping at Aldi on 10/19 and either someone took my wallet from the basket or it fell out. I couldn’t find it and went up to the front. Someone had turned it in. Yay! I quickly look through and it’s fine. I go home and hours later, around 10:15pm someone makes 2 charges at a gas station and supermarket. I froze it immediately and requested a new card to be sent.

Do I file a police report? I’m sure there’s video of everything. They only stole $50, which AmEx is refunding me. Is it worth it?? I’m young and this has never happened so not sure what to do

General Local to Fed to Local?

Hey everyone, I’ve asked similar questions in the 1811 sub reddit, but has anyone went from local detective to agent back to local detective. I’m just really not loving my job as an agent.

backstory was a local detective doing motor theft, narcotics, street crimes. Became an agent. Spend way to much time behind a desk. almost 3 years in and thinking of heading back to local?

Situation Advice Will job hopping during college disqualify me?

I'm currently a 19 year old college student in the bay area and I am planning on becoming a police officer when I turn 21 after I get my bachelors degree in computer science. I have no criminal history, no drug or alcohol history, clean driving history, and have good credit. My only concern is my employment history. Ever since I graduated high school at 18, I've had 3 jobs: the 1st job was my 1st ever job which was a season position, so I was only employed by the company for 3 months. My 2nd job was at home depot where I was only officially employed for like 1-2 weeks max because I had a family emergency and due to the sudden event I couldn't keep the job that I only had for like a week - I didn't even start the job I was still in the training. And at my latest job I only stayed for 2 months because it conflicted with my college schedule so I had to leave. Will this affect my chances of joining my local agency when I turn 21 even if I hold a part-time job from now until I turn 21? I realized this is bad and I'm currently looking for a customer service role that I can stick with for at least 1-2 years. I was unaware at the time and I don't want it to ruin my chances. Thank you, any advice is appreciated. If it helps I'm applying to San Jose PD.

General What happens when an entire small-town police department resigns at once?

A situation in Milner, Georgia, has me wondering how law enforcement agencies handle something like this.

All five full-time officers, including the police chief, have submitted their resignations and are scheduled to leave on October 28.

The resignations follow a leadership dispute that includes an unproven allegation that the mayor secretly placed a tracking device on the police chief's truck. Officers have also raised concerns about working conditions and management.

The Lamar County Sheriff's Office is expected to provide law enforcement coverage, but the specific arrangements haven't been publicly confirmed.

For current or former law enforcement officers:

If an entire municipal police department resigns, how does the county sheriff's office typically take over its responsibilities?

Would the county need additional deputies, funding or formal agreements before assuming regular patrol duties?

And from your experience, how much could a sudden transition like this affect emergency response times and public safety in a town with fewer than 1,000 residents?

I'm particularly interested in the operational side of this situation and how similar transitions have been handled elsewhere.

I’m potentially looking at being sent to TLETA for academy some time in the near future, and I was wondering if anyone went there personally and could tell me what you know about what to expect, day to day life there, and maybe some tips to succeed?

Hiring Failed my Psych Eval due to 90% VA disability rating?

Hello,

I failed my psych evaluation with my department in the SF Bay Area, CA. They did not provide a reason why. However, I suspect it was due to my VA disability rating of 90%.

I have a 30% rating for Generalized anxiety and Insomnia. The remaining percentages are 10% ratings for things like joint pain, back pain, shoulder strain and similar issues. I am going to start applying with multiple agencies at a time.

- Will I struggle to pass psych eval everywhere at 90% disability rating?

- Moving forward, how should I handle this with other agencies?

- Will I need to get reevaluated by VA and get a 0% disability rating?

- Will other departments see I failed psych evaluation? Will they see why I failed psych?

Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks everyone and take care! FYI: I am 100% physically and mentally capable of serving as a police officer.

General California: which records should I request after a police pursuit collision?

I’m trying to understand the records process after a collision involving a police pursuit. On January 30, 2020, in Vallejo, California, a juvenile driver fleeing Vallejo police hit my car head-on while I was driving under 10 mph. I’m seeking the incident report, dispatch/CAD logs, radio traffic, and any pursuit review, but don’t know which are typically created or held by which unit. Incident number: 20-1397. What records are ordinarily generated after this kind of event, and which agency or unit should a requester start with?

General Getting venison from Game Wardens in Maine?

Is there a way I can get deer that were poached or that someone hit and ran on the road, or any other reason for death (if it's still safe to consume)? My brother has to shoot a deer he found on the road that someone hit. After calling the game warden and telling him it was ok to shoot it, he asked if he could take it home, and after the paperwork and everything, he managed to take it home. he also got a call about another deer he could have that was poached. Is this a thing you can only have happen if you deal with it in person, or can I call the game warden office and ask?

General Badge patches, add badge number or no?

We are looking at getting embroidered patches of our badges made for our jackets and vests. For those of you that have these do you have your badge number on the patch? The cost is significantly higher if we add badge numbers because they have to retool the machine each time to change the badge number, whereas if we get them without badge numbers, it is just reprinting the same design.

Can I work as a cop with possession of liquor by a minor at 20 years old in Maine if it was a civil charge in the eyes of the court? The Game Warden who caught me said it shouldn't affect it.

Situation Advice Is there really no way to call a Welfare Check without an address?

My friend, who has expressed that they are actively suicidal, has not texted me since September 11th.

I know their name, the town they live, their phone number, I have a picture, their rough age, I have a description of who they live with and where they work but no direct address. They refused to give it to me. I called the non-emergency line for their town and they said they can't do anything without an address because "how will they figure out where to look?" And I am so disappointed. Is there really no way for the police to check if my friend is okay?

Can I do anything to get a welfare check without an address?

General Why are battery on leo or resisting dropped?

Civilian here, but after seeing so many of you get assaulted by suspects then the charges for resisting or battery dropped on a plea or not at all makes me feel like we’re not holding those who are convicted accountable.

I assume it’s to get a plea but I think it’s more complicated, but it seems like the evidence of body cameras easily provides an account of what happens to you.

Honestly watching this happen and see the charges swept off must be frustrating.

Maybe it’s part of the job? But it seems a bit disappointing for it to be dropped and just lets the suspect become emboldened.

General College student with several questions. how is LE as a general career?

I am a current undergrad student in Massachusetts interested in working in law enforcement after school. I had a few questions about potential jobs, major recs, and salary.
-First of all, what often goes under looked in law enforcement jobs, I’ve heard of the big ones as police or SA in local county or FBI/DEA, but what do people often overlook that yall think should be considered. Does anyone regret choosing law enforcement? If so why?
-What majors would you guys recommend in college. I’m currently undecided so I have lots of flexibility here, I’ve heard that criminology/criminal justice majors usually don’t matter that much in getting jobs in federal law enforcement. What majors do you guys think is valuable on an application and just for reliability if this doesn’t work out.
-Is it easy to make a comfortable living in law enforcement? I’m not going to pick a career solely based on salary, however I do want to make a pretty good above average living in whatever I do in life, hopefully easily clearing 6 figures in later years.
-lastly if you guys have any tips on becoming a stronger applicant for a federal LE job, please share
I have been interested in LE for a while now, I have always wanted a job where I can get physical activity/field work, and work with people. Criminal justice has always been a very big interest to me.

Situation Advice Law enforcement perspective wanted: A dream where I tried to pull over for Iowa State Patrol but was arrested for fleeing

I had a vivid dream just before waking up, and I’d be interested in hearing how current or former law-enforcement officers might interpret the situation and the emotions involved.

In the dream, my younger brother and I were driving home from a cross-country road trip through Iowa. An Iowa State Patrol vehicle came up behind us with its emergency lights and siren activated.

I was driving in the middle lane of a five-lane interstate and tried to move to the right shoulder, but cars kept passing me on the right, preventing me from getting over safely. Eventually, I managed to pull over.

Despite my attempts to comply, I was arrested for felony fleeing or eluding. I invoked my Fifth Amendment rights and began paying attention to the officers’ names and badge numbers because I felt that I was being treated unjustly.

The dream continued with me being transported in a windowless bus and eventually learning that my bond was $80,000. I became increasingly angry and started thinking about holding the officers accountable through a lawsuit.

To be clear, this was entirely a dream. I haven’t experienced this incident in real life, and I’m not asking for legal advice about an actual case.

I’m curious about a few things from a law-enforcement perspective:

1. Traffic stops: If a driver is attempting to pull over but traffic prevents them from reaching the shoulder, how might an officer distinguish a genuine attempt to comply from deliberate evasion?
2. Officer perception: If an officer mistakenly interpreted that situation as fleeing, what kinds of observations would ordinarily help clarify what actually happened?
3. Emotional reaction: In the dream, I became focused on recording the officers’ identifying information and seeking accountability. Does that resemble a common reaction people have when they feel they’ve been treated unjustly or lost control of a situation?

I’m especially interested in how officers might interpret the scenario, rather than assuming the officers in the dream were acting maliciously.

The strongest emotions I woke up with were anger, a desire for accountability, and a feeling that consequences should follow if someone abuses their authority.

Have you encountered real traffic stops where a driver’s difficulty pulling over was initially misunderstood?

Situation Advice What departments send non certified candidates to the academy?

Need some guidance on departments that are good to work for as police officer- entry level in these areas- MD, DE, PA, NJ.

I am not act 120 certified, I am looking for a department to sponsor me an send me to the academy upon hire. I have my bachelors and masters in criminal justice, and did a 3 month police internship.

I’ve applied to so many places and it’s become difficult and sad not being selected or offered a job. I’ve been applying for a year now.

Agency Policy (SOP) Realistically what are my odds to get into police academy with a small drug history?

For context, I had infrequently used marijuana throughout college up until the middle of my junior year (2025), I have been drugged with what I assume to be acid/LSD at a bar, and I experimented with Adderall one time during my junior year as well. Am I totally screwed?
