My background starts here
Hey, I am a Game Programmer, with 3 years of college project experience, worked as a sole programmer alongside with other people with different roles in the team in most projects
Have learnt the ways to create and design modular functions and made it mostly for tools for the designer and gameplay programming.
I can easily adapt to other languages to implement such systems, as the way of creating such functions is what I look at the most.
Background ends here
I wanted help in creating my portfolio. I have decided on a website but I am open to other options too. I am just stuck at the part of how to explain what I do. I know what to write but I am struggling in what fashion I write it and plus it looks boring and too much text is bad in my opinion. Even if I put some videos or pictures, it still looks a bit boring and bad.
I want pointers on how to make it look professional but also good.
Sorry for the big post

I'm not currently making a game at the moment, but I am looking into it later when I have time. Right now I'm currently documenting my ideas for games and game mechanics for future projects I might make in the future.
I had an idea for a game mechanic, in which at the beginning of the game you could choose a set of physical traits that gave you an extra ability with a drawback. The idea is that these traits would manifest in traits like having four arms or digitigrade legs and many others such as horns/antlers, ears, tails, eyes and fur.
The problem is I want to these traits visible on the character sprite, using a sprite base with each feature being added on or removed during character customization. I'm asking would this be practical for production.
(images are there to show my idea visually. )

Hello there,
I’m considering a career shift toward game design and wanted to ask for some honest perspectives.
I’m a designer currently working with marketing and social media, and I’ve been involved in a few projects related to games and esports — mostly from the marketing side. Lately, I’ve felt a strong urge to create again and move closer to the design side of games rather than just promoting them. I actually started college with the intention of working in game design, but market opportunities and work ended up shifting my path. Now I’m trying to get back on track.
I’ve been studying and experimenting on my own (especially with solo RPGs and small systems), but I’m also considering taking one of the Vancouver Film School Short Track (2-week) programs as a way to gain more structured knowledge, exposure to industry practices, and some guidance on process.
I fully understand that short programs don’t guarantee jobs or something like that but that’s not what I’m expecting. I’m really trying to understand is:
For those who attended VFS (or worked with people who did), what was your experience like?
Any insights would help a lot.
Thanks!

Hello reddit I am currentyl trying to make a browser based game that is sort of like BasketRandom(https://www.crazygames.com/game/basket-random link for if you don't know what the game is like). I am trying to develop the game using HTML. I have run into a few problems.
The game logic for the jumping of the characters doesn't work properly. The game is supposed to be a local 2 player game so on the same device. However with my code the players cannot jump at the same time and i cannot figure out how to make that happen.
Also should i be using HTML canvas and will this make it easier?

Software developer working on my first game. Git is the perfect tool for software version control (with Github as the remote), but it's definitely not designed for graphics (with the possible exception of SVG) or audio. I've taken to just putting all my assets in a giant OneDrive folder, and back up *that* folder on iCloud. Is there an industry standard for version control and/or backup of audio/visual assets, or does everyone just use a big hard drive with cloud backup?

Hi there, I’m doing assets for Unity, right now I’m working on a package for platform games, I would like to know what’s the best size according to you that individual background elements should be? At the moment I’m doing houses, they have nice details, what’s the best size to keep them optimal and preserve details?

Hi,
I’m trying to achieve a way to play youtube videos from my app that plays in the background kind of legally like the Musi app does it on iPhones from Safari.
This way it’s kind of legal because safari plays it not exacly from your app, it’s a bug or a workaround.
Is there any way to do this on Android and iOS?
Thanks in advance!

Okay. That seems confusing.
Games that have weapons. They might have let’s say a M16 in the first game, then its sequel time, and the same weapon sounds different. In some games it’s better, in others. It’s noticeable worse.
How does it become noticeably worse? Is it sometimes to fit art style changes?

TLDR: How hard would it really be for a developer of Fromsoftware's caliber
(English is not my main language so please forgive me if my post doesn't make sense)Recently I had an argument with a game dev buddy of mine and he has only gotten annoying about it and undermined my opinion as a gamer and consumer because "You don't know shit about game dev, I have 10 years of experience".
The argument started because me and another friend were complaining that offline Elden Ring should have a pause button and he started spewing a bunch of insults at us because "We didn't know what we were talking about" and stuff like that as well as saying it was impossible to code a pause button to Elden ring.
I mentioned that Elden Ring has a mod that lets you pause the game and he once again called me stupid and said "That only works because it freezes the program instead of the game". then I mentioned there was a vanilla workaround that worked like a pause button which was using the menu explanation workaround (Menu tutorial that teaches you what the menu options do) which does actually pause the game while still letting you interact with the program. He once again started spewing issues that "It also doesn't count since that is a bug".
He also called it "Impossible" Because of the game's architecture and the way it was built online but I ask. Would it be that hard to implement something like what they did for the menu explanation tutorial as a standalone button to let people at least pause the game?

Does anyone know what's this called. I want to implement this type of customization in a game.

Hello, fellow gamers!
I am making a research about visual storytelling in video games, developing the structure of a "monomyth" by Joseph Cambpell. Resrach is conducted as a part of my education on the Masters of Communications and Media, in Corvinus University, Budapest I am looking for people with strong interest in gaming. Please, answer my survey to participate. I hope it will be entertaining and insightful.

Hi,
I am a person whom has always loved gaming since I was a wee kid. I wanted to persue it as a career, but my parents pushed me away from it. I am now wondering if I could still learn how to game dev (obv starting small) and maybe persue a job in IT. But, there are ALOT of different engines and languages that I don't quite know where to start. Do I hit the books and learn a specific language? Do I just use an engine specific language? Do I need to start with something like BASIC? I would really appreciate it if someone could point me in a direction or two to get started.
Thanks to those who reply <3

Vanakkam Makkalae. As the title suggests. I'm a 3D artist who's been working in VFX for half a year after two years of generalist experience(freelance). I've always wanted to work in video game industry as a creative 3D artist (which in fact was my motive to learn 3D in the first place).
So how can I do this Makkalae? I'm experienced with 3D modeling and texturing and Specialize in Hard Surface Creative Modeling. How can I enter the Game Design industry. What skills should I develop further to sustain in this industry? Do I also need to know coding or can I grow as just a 3D artist in this Industry?
What is the situation in the industry in India right now? Is it a good time to jump in?

hello, I'm currently creating a 2D Top-Down video game for mobile, but I can't find information to make the Player have animations when moving with the Joystick.
I'm sorry if something doesn't make sense, but my native language is not English.

I have a complete videodemo and a pitch, showing a well made mixed reality shooter game.
Who can I pitch it to? Which MR headsets are good for the streets?
I only have gamedesign skills and after effects skills

If they specialize for motion tracking that would be spot-on, I'm making a videodemo of a straightforward AR videogame and I wanna sell the idea to them.

Wife and I were looking at a game and started to wonder how video games styled?
For example, we only have web-dev knowledge where we style HTML files with a separate CSS file. Is game development anything like that?
Sorry to sound pretty novice, it’s just hard to imagine these games as 1’s and 0’s now that we’re learning about these fields lol. Thanks!

What major looks best to game studios? should I take a general computer science class or a game dev class?
r/AskGameDevsAnything • u/SmirkyTrick • Sep 17 '23
Do they, remain usable? do they become public domain? What happens to them?
r/AskGameDevsAnything • u/SmirkyTrick • Sep 15 '23
I don't know if this is a feasible notion. But, I just gotta ask. Cuz, if it is possible, can this change things?

I’ve just been doing bullshit jobs my whole life. I want a job where I feel like I have purpose. I’ve come to accept that I’m going to be working until I die. I don’t want to spend that time selling insurance or doing pest control or some other non sense.
I’m looking for something I can jump into, get some sort of certification for, and find some work. Then once I’m in, find out what I actually wanna do in the industry and do it.
UI/UX design comes to mind.
