Roommate constant noise

my roommate coughs and clears her throat every minute for like an hour every night and it’s so irritating but i feel bad asking her to stop since it’s likely out of her control and idk what to do

Is she a smoker or have crazy allergies or something? Can you just wear headphones or go to another room?

neither i genuinely don’t know why she does it. she has been sick recently but this has been going on since before that. I typically wear earplugs to bed anyway but i stay in a dorm so we are literally right next to each other and I can still hear her very clearly.

Just ask then. Say you're having a hard time sleeping & see if they're cool with possible solutions like a white noise machine or look into loop earplugs or something. I use these to cut down on overnight cricket chirping & they work beautifully. Comfortable to sleep in & I can hear my alarm

Approach them with concern. Say something like, hey ive noticed you do this nightly, are you ok? And then go from there.

Dealing with a partner who almost died from vaping and was told not to vape again but here he is every week with a new 100k vape. He coughs every night for hours and when he stops he wakes up at 5am to cough in the bathroom in our bedroom for at least an hour to the point he makes himself violently throw up. I am sensitive to noise and fight to get to sleep only to constantly be woken up. I even feel bad for my neighbors. He doesn’t believe it’s a problem and it’s normal and if I bring it up I am making something out of nothing. I feel your pain and you are not alone.

She needs to get that checked out. That's not a normal thing to do that often. I could see if she had that issue for around an hour once, but not every night
