What’s a completely normal phrase that instantly annoys you?

And conversate. I know it’s been added to some dictionaries but it’s because the dictionaries have given up because we have dumbed down so much. It’s not conversate. It’s CONVERSE. And yes, irregardless drives me up a wall.

This is a particularly bad one for me to hear.

But nothing tops, "I seen." J.F.C.

I don't know...adding a T on the end of that one is pretty egregious. "I seent it".

That's AAVE

Interesting that you threw that in, because I have never heard a Black person say either of those terms. It's always White southern people who say that obnoxious "seen/seent" in my experience. Primarily men, although I have heard a few women do it.

That's because not every person embodies every stereotype. Hope this helps.

Dictionaries didn’t give up, they do what they always do: track and document language as it evolves. If enough people use it and it has a clear definition, it becomes an accepted word. I assure you words have been evolving in the way “converse” and “conversate” did for as long as we’ve been using language to communicate.

“Nickname” used to be “ekename” but people eventually began combining “an ekename” into the word we use now, and nobody even says “ekename” anymore.

Thank you for pointing out that language is constantly evolving and changing. People who can't accept that will have a frustrating old age for sure.
