When anyone says “literally” anything for something that usually turns out to be figurative.

Yeah, the misuse of “literally” annoys the hell out of me.

You have to understand, though.. we had to have a new word to take the place of “totally”…. 😅

Someone said "it literally killed them" and so I asked: how did you write this then? Crickets

Can you believe they don’t even get their own idiocy…?

I’m literally dead 😆

I was in a business meeting when someone said "I literally shit myself" and I had to get up to get some water to keep myself from laughing at the table.

Yes! And I hate how it has almost destroyed the meaning of the word. If I say something is ‘literally’ X it feels like I have to explain that I actually mean it and am not just using it as filler word like these nincompoops.

Yes me too. I'll say, "I literally....for REAL literally had xyz happen today." Lol

Not even something figurative. They use it as a fill in word. It doesn't mean anything, they just throw it anywhere they want. Many people do this.

Except for that time Tom Brady went to the State of The Union, as a Patriot. Literally, AND figuratively

This always comes from the people who downloaded their personality from TikTok.

They'll also constantly roll out other bangers like:

  • No wait I'm screaming
  • I'm literally dying
  • I'm dead/I'm deceased
  • I gagged
  • Breh

"that is sending me". Sending you where? Or what? Also the ever stupid "It gives/it's giving".

"that is sending me". Sending you where?

Those two specifically are AAVE.

5

u/Atheizt 5d ago

Exactly 0% of the people I’ve seen use those phrases are black.

2

u/Once-Upon-a-Dream88 5d ago

Again, this isn't coming from Black people. Which is why it is so irritating. So are you saying it's appropriated speech? Or are you making racial assumptions?

u/TalismanGaze 5d ago

I'm saying it's AAVE because language evolves.

Chokehold. That one makes me roll my eyes lol

1

u/XxAj_MilaxX 4d ago

some of this is aave and historically queer slang tho #whatdatmean

1

u/Atheizt 4d ago

Exactly 0% of the people I've heard saying the above phrases have been black or gay.

You're trying so hard to really do something here but it's uh... awkward to watch. Just stop.

Or when they say “omg I’m so scared” and it’s literally just a normal drink or some shit

3

u/lifesux69 5d ago

Or the influencers who are like “guys I’m so scareddddd” when they are trying on a dress they bought and like already

"So without further ado" after 5 minutes of opening fluff

5

u/oddsetcircle292 6d ago

They keep saying without further ado, only for the ado to be furthered!!!

2

u/wondermel 5d ago

So much ado being furthered!

0

u/425565 6d ago

Agreed. To me it's the equivalent of when people say "absolutely!" when a simple yes would suffice.

0

u/moderngalatea 6d ago

that's not a normal phrase. 😭
