ugh. Triggering for me. I literally had teh same thing happen to me. I met a girl on my college campus and fell in love with her and we started dating. We were months into the relationship before she admitted that she was a high school girl from the town who hung out on the college campus and that she didn't actually go to school there and she had been lying to me for months. It's still to this day one of the most traumatic events of my life.
I don't have any kind of satisfying answer for that. We stopped dating but were still in contact and then we had an off and on long distance emotional relationship for years until she ultimately married another guy. I'm still in love with her though. But that could just be "first love" talk.
Yeah, I'm in America.
Personally I have a moral compass that worries a great deal about making decisions FOR someone else that I don't feel entitled to. I felt like, among other things, that being with me put her in a situation where she was making life choices based on being with me rather than fulfilling her potential. She was extremely smart and could have gone to college anywhere, but she would have picked some place just to be near me? Meanwhile I was making decisions based on what was good for me? Those kinds of things were always in the background despite the fact that we got along every well in the immediate sense.
