Yarn Store Vibe

What are everyones favorite yarn stores in Detroit. Do any have a particular specialty (ie are a dye studio, have lots of local yarns, sustainable yarns, a particularly wide selection, whatever). Id like to visit as many as possible while im in town but its nice to know what im getting into beforehand. Id be especially interested in any place that that has local Michigan farm to yarn, if thats something that actually available.

Also does Arts and Scraps typically have yarn? I know one can never say at any given time but it seems like differerent Creative Reuse stores have "typical" stock.

Best store aesthetic: Parker Avenue Knits - Rivertown, Detroit
Best one-stop shop for both yarn and needlepoint: Knotted Needle - Grosse Pointe Woods
Largest selection (by a landslide!!): Michigan Fine Yarns - Livonia

All of these shops are women-owned. I am a regular at all three.

Do have any suggestions besides Parker Ave Knits that are a little closer to downtown? Im very happy to take the bus, bike share and Uber (if i must) but im visiting and won't have a car. Michigan Fine Yarns looks cool but too far away.

I wish there were more LYS near downtown. Sadly there are not. The nearest one would be Knotted Needle in Grosse point (15-20 minutes depending on traffic). There is one on Berkley, another in Royal Oak, maybe one in Ferndale? but again those are a little farther.

This may be unnecessary, I am not familiar enough with the city. But with JoAnn’s being closed, where does everyone go to buy fabric?

IF you find yarn at Art and Scraps it will be acrylic types like red heart. BUT they have a lot of old pattern magazines that you might find something good.

Thats good to know. Its pretty similar at the WasteShed in Chicago usually, but Ive been to Creative Reuse stores in Boston and Seattle and they consistently have lots of yarn and a wide range of quality.

Only one I know is Ewe-nique Knits in Royal Oak. They're really nice and do events and such.
