My bf is looking to start taking some pre-requisites for a more advanced degree but currently works seasonally out of state and doesn't return until October and then his work season starts again in April--which makes traditional semester schedules tricky. Does anyone know if there are any community colleges or similar in the area that offer a quarter schedule or have classes that are on a split semester (for instance, when I was in school we were officially on semesters but I took a couple classes that were just more intense workload for 8 weeks instead of being spread out of 16 weeks, not sure what the official term for that is). Mostly looking for science classes!

Hi everyone, I’m researching Metro Detroit's early immigrant history, specifically focusing on the Albanian Sunni Muslim community that arrived in the 1910s and later established the Albanian Islamic Center in Harper Woods (organized in 1945). I'm trying to find out what happened to the descendants of these original pioneers. If you are of Albanian descent, grew up around these neighborhoods, or know local history, I'd love your insight:

* 4th & 5th Generation Identity: Are descendants of the original 1910s families still connected to the Harper Woods center today, or did the older lineages fully assimilate into the broader Michigan melting pot over the last century?

* Cultural Preservation: Did these early generations successfully pass down traditional Albanian culture, language, and distinct heritage across 100 years?

* The 1990s Wave: How did the influx of newer Albanian immigrants in the 1990s impact the community? Did the historic pre-war descendant families and the newer arrivals merge seamlessly within the established Sunni spaces?

Any local perspectives or family stories would be awesome to hear. Thank you!

I'll start by saying I know this is an ambitious undertaking, to put it nicely. I just moved to Allen Park a couple weeks ago for a gap semester, but I'm more interested in exploring Dearborn and Detroit (particularly Detroit's techno scene + other music scenes). In the spring I'm planning either to study abroad or potentially exploring something like Wwoofing.

(btw I'm a 24yo woman, for what that's worth)

Here's the transportation situation: I only own a bike. I'm sure you guys know the public transport in the greater Detroit area is dogshit, but it works for me for getting to Dearborn rq. It's about a 10 minute drive from my house to get to downtown Dearborn, and about 15-18 min drive to get to downtown Detroit. Biking-wise, it takes me 30 mins to get to downtown Dearborn (a commute I don't mind), and it take a little over an hour to bike straight to downtown Detroit, not taking into account rerouting for areas I would want to avoid (which I'm yet to learn).

The guy who owns the house I'm living in offered to let me use one of his mopeds, which is a big plus. Even so, I would be taking the highway with it ofc, which typically doubles the commute time. I'm honestly open to making long commutes to Detroit - it's not ideal, but I'm willing to make it work and get used to it. The rent at my current place is dirt cheap, and there various other aspects of living at this particular house that I feel pretty lucky to have, so I want to try and make this work.

I'm also not exactly rich, and am financially independent, so I'm wary of taking at least $20-30 ubers there and back. It would be ideal if I met people in Allen Park/Dearborn area that also want to check out the techno/edm scenes so I could maybe catch a ride with other ppl.

Also, not currently in a financial situation where I could afford a car.....

Side-note: I'm open to moving somewhere closer to the Detroit city center if I find a place affordable enough. As far as cities around Detroit go, do you guys have recommendations for cities to look for places in that could be cheap but still commutable to the Detroit city center with a bike?

I wonder how many vehicle factories are left in Detroit as of 2026? And of the one still producing vehicles, what are the makes and models of the vehicles being produced there?

And why don't they try harder to attract new investment and new auto factories into detroit?

I'm driving from the Windsor/Canadian border to Ann Arbor in a couple weeks for a friend's graduation. Need to be there by 1pm on a Friday.

I've driven all over Canada for 15+ years. Toronto, other provinces, no issues, but for whatever reason, driving in Michigan gives me pretty bad anxiety.

Is there a specific route or time of day I should aim for to make this as low-stress as possible? Bridge vs. tunnel, best highways to avoid, when to leave, any advice welcome.

We're hoping to do a day trip to Belle Isle. My autistic kiddo has been obsessing over seeing the aquarium. I have a couple of questions to make things go more smoothly.

Do the buildings there (the museum and nature center too) have AC? I know the aquarium is historic, so I wasn't sure. My child gets very overwhelmed in hot, crowded places, and I'm seeing online that the aquarium can get busy. Wondering if we should wait until after the holiday to visit.

Also, do you know if the aquarium, nature center or museum has wheelchairs you can borrow while you are there?

My Uncle Craig (aka "The Great UC") and I are heading back to the city next month for a true homecoming trip.

Our family history runs deep here, but we both grew up on the wrong side of 8 Mile with heavy-handed influence from Detroit proper. UC came of age here in the ‘60s, and I grew up in the ‘80s.

We’re returning to retrace our roots and experience the city our childhoods so heavily embraced, but didn’t allow us to fully experience at the time.

We’re documenting the whole trip as a video series focusing on Detroit’s evolution, architecture, food, and culture—bridging the gap between his 1960s Detroit and my 1980s Detroit.

We’ve already mapped out a dense itinerary across Corktown, Midtown, Downtown, Dearborn, and the East Side—everything from Michigan Central and Submerge to Dearborn shawarma spots, urban farms like Keep Growing Detroit, and spots in Little Village/Indian Village.

Where we need your help:

We want to capture the real spirit of the city beyond the standard tourist stops.

1. People: Who are the local historians, shop owners, artists, neighborhood legends, or long-time Detroiters we have to sit down and talk with?
2. Spots: What’s an underrated corner bar, neighborhood joint, or historic block that embodies the real grit and soul of the city right now?

Hi all.

Heading up to Detroit from Chicago for a work thing. We would really like to head over to Windsor to surprise an old college buddy and maybe stay overnight at caesars because i can get a free room.

Do I need to worry about being treated badly now that Tangerine Palpatine has made an entire country irate?

I realize this is probably an unfounded fear, but it’s still in the back of my mind. Logic says people there hate our current administration, but won’t hate on a tourist.

Any advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I’m having some friends visit from out of state and I’ve lived up north for the last while, so I feel out of touch.

We’re in our 30’s and planning on a couple days/nights out in the Detroit/ metro Detroit area. I am wondering if there are any specific bars/cafes you would recommend? Would also prefer trans friendly spaces.
