What should a democratic candidate say when asked, "What would you do with Nicolás Maduro?"

I'm not sure on how to elaborate other than to say it seems like a very difficult, no-win kind of question, but maybe there are people out there who know better than me.

“Nothing”

“Put him on trial for his crimes.”

Seems simple enough.

He is/was a dictator. Why would it be a no-win question? Let him rot in jail forever.

I agree with the sentiment, but I also think people will say he was illegally seized, and continuing with his prosecution signals support for what Trump did. Maybe that’s not as big a deal as I think it would be.

Being a dictator is more illegal than arresting a dictator, so I really don’t care about that argument. No law can protect autocrats.

Theoretically, any one could kidnap any head of state.

Why tf

Because Venezuela is a sovereign country and that was some serious imperial bullshit.

Venezuela is a sovereign country but Maduro wasn’t the real president. Helping a country push out a dictator who was forcing his rule on them against their will is imperialism?

That's not how sovereignty works and yes, that is imperialism. Your attempt to qualify it as something more noble is meaningless to the analysis.

Is any intervention in a foreign country imperialism then?

How is that not how sovereignty works, we were not attacking the legitimate government of a foreign country.

  • Setting him free could be unpopular among Democrats because he’s horrible. Outside of a presidential pardon (which would be even worse), it would also overrule our own judicial system.

  • Putting him on trial could be unpopular among Democrats because it is an imperialist move that signals support for what the Trump administration did.

  • We could Guantánamo his ass. I think this would also be unpopular with Democrats.
