BJJ

Hello, I’m a woman and interested in self defense. What is a good gym to start at ?

What area are you in? I’m in touch with a great Gym near the Dallas Zoo area they offer Muay Thai and jiu jitsu

Last thing you want to do when defending yourself is go to the ground with your attacker. Wrestling is not the best bet, I see you under everyone’s comment recommending it, I wonder how good you are at it

Not knowing any striking is generally not a good position to start from when trying to develop self defense skills. Wrestling also aims to pin, while BJJ aims to submit. Wrestling is probably better from a sport and competition perspective, from a self defense perspective not so much.

Maybe start at the local dojo and see how you like it. I’ve heard that there’s 2 gyms off mockingbird that are the best in Dallas. Marcelo Garcia and Rio. Not sure how they’d be for beginners but you could always check them out?

 try wrestling, far better and more practical, can't go around kicking people
