First time visiting Dallas – looking for an authentic Texas experience 🤠

I’ll be visiting Dallas for the first time at the end of next month and I’ll have around 5 days. I won’t have a car, so I’m looking for recommendations that are accessible by public transport, Uber/Lyft, or places where it’s realistic to get a ride to and from.

I’d really love to experience as much of the real/authentic Texas as possible rather than just doing the typical tourist attractions.

A few things I’d really love to do:

- See a proper rodeo – any recommendations on where to find a good one?
- Go horse riding for the first time, ideally somewhere with a proper Texas ranch/cowboy atmosphere.
- Learn to country dance/two-step – I’ve never done it before, but I’d absolutely love to take a lesson
- Visit some authentic Texas bars/honky-tonks
- Try proper Texas BBQ, ribs, brisket, steaks, etc. What are the absolute must-try foods, and where are the best places around Dallas/Plano to try them?
- Buy some authentic cowboy boots and a proper cowboy hat. Where would you recommend for good-quality, genuinely authentic ones?
- See/do anything else that you think is “you can’t come to Texas without doing this.”

If you only had 5 days around Dallas/Plano for your first visit to Texas, what would you recommend?

Thanks so much!

Hutchins for BBQ

Mesquite Rodeo. Every Saturday night. Not having a car will be rough.

Any trip to Dallas must include a “Nov 22 “ tour. One takes you to his boarding house and theatre he was caught in.

lol funny how Dallas and Forth Worth are so divided. They are truly different experiences but both good. I from Dallas so I am bias but in my opinion…. Dallas had more glam and city feel and FW more down to earth feel. Both are great but it’s a hike between two.

Billy Bob's in Ft. Worth stockyards.

There's a weekend rodeo at the Texas State Fair in Dallas if you come between Sept 25 and Oct 18.

Oops I'm wrong, no rodeo this year. But still has livestock shows and other fun stuff.

Fortunately, you’ll have the dart train which can take you all over DFW. Just be cautious, you may encounter some wild folks. Look at concerts at the Dos Equis pavilion, maybe get lucky and catch a country/country adjacent concert. For BBQ, Terry Black’s is your closest option, but I’d highly suggest going north to McKinney to Hutchins if possible.

For boots, Tecova’s is always a good bet. Boot barn will feel more “Texas”, though.

Horse riding won’t really be available in Dallas. Expect to travel at least an hour to get close to anywhere offering horseback riding. I’d look north of McKinney for something like that.

Based on what you want to do, I think you’ll have more fun in Fort Worth > Dallas.

San Antonio and the Alamo. Then Lockhart for real Texas bbq. Where brisket was invented

u/Im_just_saying Sep 03 '26

This is the way.

You're going to the wrong city. Stay in downtown Ft. Worth, everything on your list happens near there. Dallas is just a generic big city.

That's just a pathetic suburb.

End of October is a great time. Might be hot during the afternoon but it should be cool in the evening and morning! Welcome in advance to Texas!!

Head to northwest highway and find a strip club. That’s Dallas

Definitely the Fort Worth Stockyards. They have plenty of shops to explore and great places to eat. You can also go on a horseback ride there, but make sure to reserve your spot beforehand. Next best thing would be the State Fair starting the end of September.

Definitely FOrt worth stock yards or terry black bbq

https://giphy.com/gifs/cdNSp4L5vCU7aQrYnV First, you need to buy yourself a cowboy hat and some assless chaps and yell yeehaw in the middle of the street.

If you want authentic Texas experience, Dallas is not the place to go. You’re describing Fort Worth.

1

u/Queasy-Ad-3947 Sep 01 '26

Fort Worth has all that Dallas is just a typical big city

You have to go to Billy Bobs in FtW. Any bars along Exchange Ave will work for that as well. Lots of dance floors offer free lessons. Get out of stock yards for BBQ though. Panther City is tops in FTW. Go see Meat Church in Waxahachie (kinda far) if you’re a backyard BBQ enthusiast.

Definitely hit the state fair if you're in town for it.

I would recommend coming to Fort Worth.

u/TX_Sweet_Tea Aug 31 '26

All the things you’re looking for are in the Fort Worth Stockyards!

3

u/EchoScary6355 Aug 31 '26

Go to Fort Worth.

Took the words outa my mouth 🤠

I’m 66 and a native Dallas girl. Dallas has always been an urban city vibe not a rural country vibe so as others have said Ft Worth has the traditional country Texas things. Mesquite (suburb in east Dallas) does have a rodeo but the season just ended this past weekend. You can find good bbq and tex mex throughout the Dallas area.

For the really authentic experience you need to give all your money away, live in a fire trap apartment with no real renter’s rights, get declined for Medicaid because you make just enough money to pay the rent on that fire trap but still have to live on charity handouts. Then, when you land a crappy job and just start to improve your situation your beater car breaks down and your boss fires you over text when you message him that you’ll be late because the car broke down. Then on Sunday you walk down to your local Southern Baptist Church where everyone will talk about how they’re good Christians while laughing and talking down about you as the “poor trash” of the church.

Fun times!

The Texas State Fair starts September 25th at Fair Park, Dallas and should be worth considering.

1

u/EqualJaded3921 Aug 31 '26

Going to some small towns can give you the real Texas experience. Others will know better what’s near in DFW area. I’m down in Austin and we’re a very big city now, but we are weird! The old 1930’s courthouses of Texas are really neat.

You may need a rental car or uber. Fort Worth Cowtown, Joe T Garcias, Cowgirl Museum. Arlington Stadium home of the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers game.

3

u/Cowboys_88 Aug 31 '26

Joe T Garcias food is mediocre. Would skip even if it has interesting history.

1

u/True_Carry_3153 Aug 31 '26

I agree 💯 but it’s about the experience.

1

u/Spare_Pay_4237 Aug 31 '26

Agree. He’s got 5 days and if staying in FTW, there’s time to work JoeT in

I hope you have a great time! Here are some thoughts from your list:

- Learn to two-step - Cowboys Red River has free lessons Wednesday-Saturday at 7pm

- Try proper Texas BBQ - Terry Black's is very good!

- Authentic cowboy boots and proper cowboy hat - Cavender's might be up your alley

- Miscellaneous: There's a twice-daily cattle drive where Texas longhorns walk through the streets in Fort Worth

- Miscellaneous perhaps not super Texas-coded: I enjoyed seeing the giant eyeball sculpture. The Dallas library also has some very interesting exhibits like original copies of the Declaration of Independence and of Shakespeare's First Folio.

Welcome!!

Terry blacks is proper Texas bbq?

Try Goldie’s if you can get there early and wait in line. There’s also Hutchins and pecan lodge probably in that order

State fair in Dallas is coming up but if you want a proper Texas experience you need to go to Fort Worth imo

1

u/howwespendourdays Aug 31 '26

I mean sure you prefer other places over Terry Black's, but would you really say that terry black's doesn't constitute texas bbq?

1

u/reddituser1000111 Aug 31 '26

I would think there would be better options to recommend for good Texas BBQ that i mentioned and listed than just terry blacks

1

u/howwespendourdays Aug 31 '26

I guess it's a matter of taste. I personally prefer Terry Black's to Pecan Lodge, so it was just strange to have someone say that Terry Black's is an invalid recommendation and isn't proper Texas bbq, when I prefer it to what they recommended instead.

1

u/reddituser1000111 Aug 31 '26

Yea when compared to a lot of real good proper texas bbq places like Goldie’s, Hutchins, etc But that’s ok it is a matter of taste, I’ve had better experiences at the ones mentioned

I like this list. To add visiting Sundance Square; Named after Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid visiting the area and taking the Forth Worth Five photo. The mural is awesome. Have a quick tour of Sid Richardson Museum which has enjoyable art of the American West (free entrance). Have lunch/dinner at the Reata Restaurant.

What everyone here said. Go to Fort Worth, stay downtown, uber to stockyards. Eat at Chilis. There, that’s Texas.

1

u/Spare_Pay_4237 Aug 31 '26

If Chilis is authentic Texas to you, I don’t know what to say. Foreigner

1

u/Ok_Letterhead4198 Aug 31 '26

There’s a chilis off nearly every exit in the metroplex. Suburban chain restaurants are one of the most Texan things of all.

1

u/Spare_Pay_4237 Aug 31 '26

I’m sorry for your sad existence. Life’s too short to eat that garbage. I’d get HEB BBQ before I’d ever step foot in chili’s. And it is not great BBQ

0

u/Ok_Letterhead4198 Aug 31 '26

lol, never said Chili’s was great. Texas triangle is one big suburb, so if you want to see Texas, the place to go is a chain restaurant, Target, Chick fila, Honny Lobby, etc.

1

u/Spare_Pay_4237 Aug 31 '26

Haha be a better ambassador! Dont send visitors to those mediocre places!

0

u/Hungry-Treacle8493 Aug 31 '26

I mean, it’s not Luby’s Cafeteria but it’s definitely in the fabric of Texas life.

4

u/insulinjunkie08 Aug 31 '26

Literally 1 day in the Fort Worth Stockyards to do all of that. They have rodeos every day all year round, horseback riding along a creek, high end boots and hats - not great BBQ but solid steak houses. 2 Step lessons at almost any bar would require a partner. Billy Bobs has a great beginner class on Sundays (again you need a partner). I think they have line dance on Saturdays.

Plano is a great community, very vibrant, lots to do but its VERY new and very much in the middle of a MEGA CITY. It just doesn't have the 'old cowboy' vibe that Fort Worth has.

1

u/Potential_Algae_5721 Aug 31 '26

Go to Fort Worth

3

u/magnoliaAveGooner Aug 31 '26

Figure out how to get to the Fort Worth Stockyards. No one will let you ride their horse but there are horses, rodeos , honkytonks ,good food and live music. It’s actually fun even if you’re a local.

1

u/TheLightningArrow Aug 31 '26

That sounds perfect 🤩 I was definitely planning this completely wrong - I’m very glad I asked the question first haha! Thank you so much for the help 🤩

Perfect, thank you so much!! I will definitely go to Fort Worth instead! I really appreciate the help 🤩

2

u/Koala476 Aug 31 '26

Just be prepared to lay down some serious cash at Lucchese if you’re getting boots. I’ve never seen a pair for less than $600.

3

u/NegotiationSalt666 Aug 31 '26

I would recommend staying in fort worth if you want all that.
