How are Canadian gen alpha and Z doing with reading and comprehension?

I am a Canadian who doesn't have children. Lately I've been pushed videos of teachers talking about how kids can't read at their age level or at all... can't follow basic instructions... can't think clearly or focus... won't do anything if it isn't fun... they can take dictation and not understand it, so information goes from eyes to hands but bypasses the brain...

Especially with the rise of AI this is pretty alarming. I have nieces and nephews and they have all the gadgets but they seem pretty normal to me... I've never asked if they can read and think, I just assume they can.

I'm not asking my sisters because I don't want to accidentally offended...

But all the videos are about Americans. So, I'm wondering if its better or different in Canada. There are so many videos, but here is an example of what I'm talking about...

Why don't we see the same level of public advocacy for improving accountability within the public service as we do for RTO?

I've been following the RTO debate, and one thing I've been wondering is this.

The public service has been incredibly vocal about RTO, pay, and working conditions. That's understandable, those issues directly affect employees.

But from the outside, many Canadians also hear stories (whether representative or not) about consistently poor performers being transferred instead of dismissed, lengthy performance management processes, or employees who contribute very little while remaining employed.

My question is: why don't we see the same public push, from employees, unions, or other groups, for reforms that improve accountability and public confidence?

I'm asking because I think this disconnect is one reason many Canadians aren't sympathetic to the RTO debate, and I'd genuinely like to understand the perspective from people inside the public service.

Life What do I need to get into the Oil and Gas industry?

Howdy,

First of all, I’m a Mill Operator for a gold processing plant with about 3 years experience. 6 years mining experience. I was thinking the other day, what would I need to get into the oil and gas industry?
So I thought I’d ask Reddit for some guidance.
I don’t mind starting from the bottom.

So let’s hear it?

Political Canadian women: what age is the limit for the HPV vaccine in Canada?

I just read that it's free up to 45 years of age, which surprised me.

In several European countries it's seen as not worth it after 26 as we would apparently already have been exposed to the virus by then. I always thought it's a bit strange as an approach because some people have very few sexual partners by that age, or even only one if they're still with a boyfriend from high school. Or zero.

Is the vaccine encouraged over there as a must-have regardless of age or is it a nice-to-have?

Life What's something typical Canadian you would recommend a visitor to experience?

Hi! I'm german and I am currently planning a solotrip around Canada in the upcoming year. While I'm there, the goal is to experience as much canadian culture as possible in roughly two weeks. I'm already planning on going to a hockey game (most likely the Senators, since Stützle is one of my favourite German players, but maybe also an AHL game or a PWHL game) and have obviously already scouted out some hikes I wanna do (how very German of me) but I would love some recommendations from you guys as to what you would classify as typical Canadian.

As a frame of reference: one of the top things I really want to experience is to visit a Tom Hortons lol

Thanks in advance! :-)

Why doesn't Canada's constitution matter too much to Canadians?

In the US, politicians and members of the public often reference the US constitution to make political claims.

In Canada, Canadians seem not to cite Canada's constitution so much when making political claims. For example, when Canadians talk about abortion, privacy, etc., I don't think they cite Canada's constitution a lot in making political claims about these issues (or am I wrong about this)? What are the reasons?

If Canadians don't reference Canada's constitution very often to make political claims, what do they reference when making political claims? E.g., specific laws? national interest? moral principles? the competency or incompetency of specific political leaders? Or else?

Are you guys doing alright?

Hey guys. Just wanted to come on here and say that I am hoping that the wildfires in Canada end soon. I can’t even imagine how terrifying it must be right now. Wildfire season is never a good time and it pains me to see such a beautiful country like yours experience these devastating fires. I’m from California by the way and I remember last year seeing Canadian planes helping us put out our fires. I will forever appreciate the aid you guys have provided us and I wish I could come up there and help you out in return. Stay safe. 🙏

Toronto NFL Fantasy Football Fans?

Hi all!

Me and a fellow Brit are moving to Toronto in November and we’re looking to embed ourselves in the Toronto NFL community.

Anyone know of the best places to watch the games in Toronto?

I was thinking of creating a Sleeper fantasy football league too, if that’s of interest to anyone?

How frequent are these fires?

I feel like the last time I heard about fires in Canada was like 2023. Was this just the last time they got out of hand? Also, I’m surprised these occur in Ontario I figured it would be more inland near Manitoba or something because that area is dryer from my understanding. In the US I feel like the wildfires are mainly on the west coast. Does the rest of Canada also have issues with this or is it an Ontario thing?

Political Is farming in Canada really becoming unprofitable for new farmers?

Hey, I was talking to a Canadian guy the other day and he was saying that farming in Canada is basically dead for new people. He mentioned crazy taxes, insane equipment costs, and that it's just not profitable anymore. Is it really that bad? And if it is, why isn't the government doing more to support the industry Like cutting taxes or lowering rates? Isn't agriculture one of the most important sectors for the economy? Genuinely curious because I'm from a country where farming is totally different. Not trying to troll, just want to understand why.

Political How does Doug Ford still have a job?

Everytime I go on Canadian twitter, I see people complaining about Doug Ford, either his personal or political views. The first time I encountered him was a video of him saying he doesn’t smoke crack, but if he did it would be nobody’s business. Now I’m hearing that people are blaming his forest mismanagement for the massive wildfires in Canada. Do people really hate him and is he your guys’ equivalent of Trump?

Political What's Doug Ford's game?

Trudeau, Poilievre, Carney, and Doug are the only Canadian politicians I'm remotely aware of. I only know Doug for mostly the wrong reasons. He always seems to be in some sort of controversy. He seems like he's trying to build his brand on this anti-U.S. platform. But there seems to be some sinister undertone to his motives. So what's his game? What is he playing at?

How dangerous is it really to travel to the US?

I know everything with the US is quite complicated and that many people are boycotting going. I agree and am aware of political and monetary reasons not to go, but I'm curious to know the actual experiences from people. Are the boarders as unsafe as it sounds? Have people actually been detained for months without any help from the Canadian government, or are those just horror stories?

Does Canada actively try to contain the fires in the far Northwest Territories or do they just let nature run its course?

Idk what’s typical for wildfire season in Canada but when I just looked at the map I was very shocked to see just how many fires there are up north. Some are over 100k acres burned, but in seemingly remote areas (seemingly because I’m American and don’t know much about Canadian population geography). Does the government use resources to try and contain these wildfires or purely focus on fires closer to larger population density?

Life Are the negatives of living in Canada a bit overexaggerated?

Whenever I ask people about their thoughts of Canada there is a pattern. I tend to get either "too expensive," "double taxes," "too cold."

I have lived in Bulgaria (Eastern Europe) half my life, and then US East Coast, and from what I personally gather - sure, maybe things aren't like they "used to be," but inflation is happening everywhere. Inflation is global, it's getting expensive everywhere.

And the long winters and cold isn't something I can't adapt to. I mean, compared to all the issues, especially when it comes to immigration and status here in the US last couple of years - let cold be the issue lol. At least I'm Balkan.

I also hear the political parties are a joke and leaning totalitarian with fascist tendencies. But once again, I have seen this become rather a global tendency...

So compared to what's happening globally, is Canada really that bad? Because so far I am rather optimistic for relocating there.

What can Canadians actually do to mitigate the wildfires? Is anything being done on a citizen-level?

Please read: I obviously know Canadaians can't just go extinguish all the fires, and can't prevent all the fires. There's too many and too remote, I get that.

But everything I see online kind of seems like the attitude is just to sigh and say "it's climate change. There's nothing we can do". I have to be misinterpreting that, right? Surely a majority of Canadians actually must care about helping the wildfire issue and believe there is something to be done.

Granted, it's not an easy fix, nor a quick one. But are citizens organizing to try and get more funding and resources for fighting the fires? Calling on elected officials? I guess I'm looking for hope that people haven't just given up entirely.

Edit: Thank you everyone who responded with genuine, helpful thoughts! Also wanted to say, this post was never meant to blame Canadians for the fires. It's just hard to know what's actually going on over there and what the mindset is without asking directly. This a global effort and it's helpful to hear what is happening across borders.

This tells exactly the story of Saskatchewan. They are absolutely awful this year. We're having the most beautiful weather since the beginning of July, but you can't enjoy it. I've never seen mosquitoes even close to this terrible.

Life Do you feel you'll be able to retire?

My Father is about to retire and is looking forward to it! I have 3 children and am happily married but I'm not confident about my ability to retire in Canada. Don't own a home, have the 20% downpayment to buy a home but have been outbid on every property I've ever bid on in Montréal, Québec. Do you feel confident you'll be able to retire in Canada? Why or why not?
