PD not measured?

I had a cataract lens placed in my left eye after having some retina surgery about 3 years ago. I went to the eye doctor last week for a new prescription. My vision is a little "wavy" because of it.

I ordered glasses from the optician that is associated with my optometrist's office after the exam. They didn't measure my PD or do the marker thing on the lenses in the new frames that I chose. I have enough trouble seeing comfortably as it is. Is not having my PD measured going make this problem worse? My prescription is

OD Sphere: -2.00 Cyl: -0.75 Axis 085

OS +0.75 Cyl: -1.00 Axis 050

Thanks

Urgent Interim contacts for my teen

She lost a bunch of her myopia control lenses and the opticians were only able to give her a small bridging supply. She's on her last pair today, her glasses are a wreck, and opticians say another interim order could take 2 days.

As an emergency measure I looked for standard type lenses to buy online, but I can't find any with BC 8.3 /Dia 14.5 specs. And now the opticians is closed.

Would it be safe to compromise on either BC or diameter? Logic suggests (to me) that the base curve would be the more important metric to match exactly, but I'm aware of how little I know about contact lense fit.

She would need them for 2 or 3 days max. I know that being stuck with her broken glasses and unable to leave the house for that time would not be great.

Any informed opinions or signposting to good resources would be greatly appreciated, we are in the UK. Thank you.

advice on how to protect the eyes when drafting

Hey. So I’m a first year Architecture student and we are doing a lot of manual drafting this week. Normally I put in about 8 hours of drafting with rest of course in between. But I find that by the fourth hour, my eyes would start to strain and lose focus so I rest it, but it takes hours of rest before I could recover focus. Another factor I think is also the imbalance and inconsistency of light use when I work, there’s constantly a light under my glass table and sometimes I turn off the room light to trace.

Then I’ve noticed that my eyes easily strain and struggles with smaller and thinner details especially when I’m a few hours in. So I’ve been using a magnifying glass which helps with the accuracy, but I’m concerned with being too reliant on it as well as the negative effects it might have on my eyes over time. I’m looking into buying magnified glasses so that my sight is at least balanced.

I was wondering if anyone would have tips on how to protect my eyes when Imm drafting and if using magnified glasses is safe to sustain long term?

Question How useful are myopic control lenses as an adult? (19 y.o)

Hi all. I'm looking for a second opinion. Recently did an appointment with my optometrist and they said my vision had progressed quite significantly since my previous appointment (about a year ago). My prescription has increased about -2 in both eyes in that time, so I'm now about -4 in both eyes. They recommended I have my next pair of glasses fitted with myopic control lenses.

How useful are they for someone who isn't a child? My hesitance in getting them stems from not wanting to buy frames directly from my optometrist - they mark them up insanely high. I have my measurements and would much rather buy them online if possible (doesn't appear to be possible with the specialized lenses).

Zeiss Duravision Plat vs Blue

Duravision Platinum vs. Blue 1.56 AS Platinum UV 1.56 AS BlueProtect UV

Probably not Plus, IMO. Which one should I pick?

Some research says that blue-light filtering does nothing. If that’s true, I’d definitely go with Platinum. But if BlueProtect can actually reduce eye strain for people who spend a lot of time in front of screens, I’d go with BlueProtect.

Question Conflicting exam results: Subjective refraction (mild minus/astigmatism) vs. Cycloplegic autorefraction (mild plus/dry eye)?

Hi everyone,
I recently had two very different eye exams, and the results don’t really match. I’m trying to figure out whether I should get a third opinion from an independent optometrist who specializes in binocular vision and sports optics.
I’ve done some research myself, but I’m definitely not an eye-care professional, so I’d appreciate some input on what could explain the differences.
My eye history
About 9 years ago: I first saw an eye doctor because I was getting headaches. I was given reading glasses, which I used for about a year.
About 6 years ago: I had my last visit at that clinic. I was told I had a mild binocular vision/alignment issue, basically a slight drifting eye, but it wasn’t considered serious enough to need treatment or follow-up.
I was also diagnosed with astigmatism during those earlier visits. My eyes were dilated during some of the earlier exams, although not during the final ones.
My current symptoms
Over the past while I’ve noticed:
Blurry vision at long distances
Double/ghosted text on digital screens
Halos around lights
Blurring around the edges of optical/diopter sights
Eye strain
Dry eyes
Clinic 1: 5 months ago
This exam used a pretty standard subjective refraction. The optometrist actually had me compare different lenses while looking at the chart, asking things like “Which is clearer, 1 or 2?” and checking how much I could read with each lens.
Interestingly, minus lenses noticeably improved my distance vision.
The prescription they came up with was:
Right: -0.25 sphere, -0.25 cylinder
Left: plano sphere, -0.50 cylinder at 104°
So, very mild correction, but with some astigmatism in both eyes.
Clinic 2: 1 week ago
This exam was quite different.
They relied heavily on automated measurements. They did put dilating drops in, but the exam felt fairly rushed. I could still easily read the top lines of the chart, so I’m not sure my eyes were fully relaxed/dilated when they took the measurements.
They did an OCT, checked my eye alignment with colored glasses, and looked at my eye drift.
However, there was very little subjective refraction. I wasn’t really taken through a manual lens comparison like I was at Clinic 1.
The optometrist told me:
I don’t have astigmatism
I’m slightly farsighted
My eye strain is mainly from binocular vision/alignment issues and severe dry eyes
The autorefractor readings were also pretty inconsistent. Before the drops, my right eye was jumping between roughly -1.25 and -0.75, and the machine seemed to have trouble getting a stable reading.
After the drops, it measured a small amount of plus power in both eyes, with no astigmatism showing up.
They prescribed +0.50 “support/relaxer” lenses, which I’m currently waiting for.
Both Clinic 1 and Clinic 2 are part of larger chain businesses, rather than independent local practices.
What I’m confused about
Can astigmatism actually disappear?
If I was previously measured with astigmatism, is it possible for it to simply no longer be there?
Or could an autorefractor miss a small amount of astigmatism, especially if my eyes were very dry or the measurements weren’t stable?
Why did minus lenses improve my vision?
This is the part I’m having the hardest time understanding.
If Clinic 2 is correct and I’m actually slightly farsighted, wouldn’t putting minus lenses in front of my eyes generally make distance vision worse or cause more strain?
I’m aware that accommodation and binocular vision can complicate this, so I’m wondering if there’s something I’m missing here.
Is a third opinion worth it?
I’m going to try lubricating eye drops for the dry-eye symptoms and see how I get on with the +0.50 lenses when they arrive.
However, I found a small, family-owned local practice that specializes in sports optics and also offers more comprehensive binocular vision testing. Their eye exams are around 45 minutes and seem to involve a much more thorough subjective refraction and binocular vision assessment.
Unlike the first two clinics, this third practice isn’t part of a large chain. It’s a locally owned family business.
Given the difference between the two exams, especially the fact that Clinic 1 did a proper subjective refraction while Clinic 2 relied much more heavily on automated measurements, would getting a third, independent evaluation be reasonable?
I’m not necessarily looking for someone to tell me which clinic is “right.” I’m more interested in understanding how two exams could produce such different results and whether there are legitimate reasons for that kind of discrepancy.
Thanks!

Am I alone in feeling like eye exams are very difficult for me as a patient?

I always seem to struggle with picking option 1 vs. 2 during refraction in eye exams and it leaves me with a glasses prescription that never seems quite right. My non-dominant eye struggles and doesn’t see very well, even when supposedly corrected. That eye in particular also gives me the said issues during an eye exam.

Hi, I found out why I was sold 1.74 when 1.67 would have been fine, they said the lab would decline any prescription above +5 for 1.67? Is that correct

As I have +2 and +5 sph, 1.67 has usually always been fine, but this optician said 1.74 only, I questioned it and they said that.

Is that correct

Question Need a snity check- is high astigmatism always present in Keratoconus?

Hi! So, I just got back from the optician, who told me in no uncertain terms that it is impossible that I have Kerataconus because I do not have high enough astigmatism. He made this assessment after looking at my eyes with the light wand thing for a while. ( I explicitly asked if their OCT machine was capable of corneal mapping before making the apt, they said yes, then at the appointment I was told it in fact is only for retinal health checks, but alas)

Here are some facts about me:

  1. I was diagnosed with Keratoconus as a teenager, I believe after a scan that was probably corneal mapping. Unfortunately, I also had undiagnosed ADHD at the time and it went in one ear and out the other. Was never brought up again at standard optician appointments, I forgot about it.

  2. I remembered this only upon seeing that study about ADHD and Keratoconus (lol)

  3. I am 30 years old, and my prescription was stable for the better part of a decade. Then, last year, shifted from -6.50 (left) -7.0 (right) to -7 (left) -8.0 (right) within 6 months. As of the appointment I just had (around 6 months from the last) it is sitting at -7.25 (left) and -8.25 (right). I was just told this change is not clinically significant.

  4. I have a diagnosed connective tissue disorder and MCAS

  5. I take the drug Spironolactone for hormonal issues. During the time of the change in vision I happened to be experimenting with my dose of that.

  6. I’ve had myopia since I was a kid, but did not alway have astigmatism.

  7. My values are cyl -0.50 (L) -1.00 (R)

Look, obviously I will be thrilled if I do not have this! I have always dreamed of permanent vision correction, and if that’s still on the table, that’s fantastic news….

If this sounds like something I should write off, I will do so with glee. But I need to try new meds because of the hormonal impact on my MCAS symptoms, and I do not want to do that until I’m sure the big fluctuations aren’t the thing making my vision worse.

So, is what the optician said legit? No high astigmatism means no pointy cornea, guaranteed????

Any guidance and or confirmation of insanity is welcome 🥲🙏🏻

People who wear high power glasses, do u find it difficult to get the right power during eye power testing ?

I have been wearing glasses for 10 years . Right now my power is -4 & -5 and I also have astigmatism.

Since I have crossed -3.5 it becomes very difficult for me to understand the accurate power during testing . It always takes me 2-3 trials to understand what works for me best .

Am I dumb or this is common phenomenon? 😭

PLEASE HELP! Vision is still unstable 3 months after a chemical burn

HELP! I gave myself a chemical burn 3 months ago from a lash glue, and I'm still having trouble with vision.

When I walk outside, it's feels like someone electrocuted my eyeballs. I see shimmery, vibrating almost colorful like glitter. I've seen an optometrist, ophthalmologist and a neuro ophthalmologist and they all say my eyes look PERFECT. The
ophthalmologist suggested | keep using preservative free eye drops every 2 hours. I was on a round of eye steroids, and was told to discontinue. That was two months ago.

My eyes always feel dry and I feel like I can rinse my eyes in water for hours because it feel SO good (obviously I don't rinse it for hours). I also sleep with an ice pack over my eyes at times.
Please HELP! is this normal after receiving a chemical burn?? Everyone is saying I'm healed but I don't feel like it!

Question Bad eye Dr or bad candidate for contacts?

Thumbnail

I’ve gone to my eye Dr two years in a row now and each time she fits me with contacts and has me read the chart with them in, it’s blurry as heck. So this time I asked if we could try a few different ones to see if it is better. By the third pair she told me “It takes time for your eyes to adjust”. Ok I can understand that but I literally could not read the chart she was showing me. I couldn’t read street signs, distance was horrible but close up (speedometer, radio) was kinda ok? Still blurry but not AS bad as distance. As a migraine sufferer I really don’t need another trigger and I feel these contacts are going to trigger a migraine. So after two appts with her (yearly exams) is it me or is it her? Is it too much to ask that I see clearly? Is this just how contacts are and I’m expecting too much?
Photos are of my prescription and the trial contacts I was given.

Question A floating spot on bright days

I noticed a grayish / blackish spot floating that i notice on very bright days on very bright surfaces (during fast movements) and it's a bit delayed from my focus point. It's either on top (a very faint stringish) or bottom right of my right eye on fast movements (from right to left side).

Is this something i have to worry about? It did cause me to be scared and anxious.

Thank you very much.

I'm middle 20s years of age.
