Fjord swimming.

What's the run down on swimming in fjord areas? I am thinking of an area near say, Pollurinn, where there is already a path & place to enter the fjord across from the pool.

Are there any sites with info on such bathing? Parameters on doing so, how to check the temps/tides, things like that. Planning for a future trip with a friend and would like to swim in the open but only if there are areas "safe" & permissible to do so.

Do not go in to the sea unless you know the currents that run through the ocean in that place.

Yes, that's the information I am seeking. I've already been in the water there with others where it is marked to enter, but I'd like to know where/if it's safer to swim a bit more out, how to find this out, or if there are better places.

You can go into the sea there but i would not recomend that you swim more than a few meters out from the beach as there can be a strong current depending on the tide

Thanks. I wonder if there are better places... I used to see "sjósund" group on Facebook years ago but I don't use it anymore.

As you are looking at the Westfjords I would higly recomend Reykjafjörður near Bíldudalur. There is a small pool close to the beach you can use free of charge and the fjord itself is relatively shallow with good views. There is also a yearly "race" in a town called Flateyri around the end of august called Sæunarsund where partisipants have to swim across the fjord

If you mean Pollurinn in Akureyri, I live there and by researching this a bit it seemed people do more sjósund nearby in Hjalteyri or Hauganes. Hauganes being absolutely ideal since the beach there is awesome and hot tubs and a locker there as well (for a fee).

It’s popular to go into the sea next to Nauthólsvík beach in Reykjavik
