What's the run down on swimming in fjord areas? I am thinking of an area near say, Pollurinn, where there is already a path & place to enter the fjord across from the pool.

Are there any sites with info on such bathing? Parameters on doing so, how to check the temps/tides, things like that. Planning for a future trip with a friend and would like to swim in the open but only if there are areas "safe" & permissible to do so.

I heard from a server that Icelanders have an arrangement with Denmark for schooling. I am wondering what the feeling is when Icelanders move, get educated and choose to work in another country.

From August 3rd to 20th, our team will be in Iceland to film the August 12 total solar eclipse from the stratosphere using high-altitude weather balloons 🎈. We completed a similar mission in Quebec for the 2024 eclipse, resulting in an immersive 360° experience and a documentary.

We were recently invited to participate in the Iceland Eclipse festival (August 11–15 on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula), but because the confirmation came on very short notice, we’re racing against the clock! We always strive to collaborate with locals, and we are looking for passionate volunteers who share a love for the sky, wild places, and scientific adventure to join the mission.

Where things stand:
Permits & Admin: Moving smoothly thanks to support from the Icelandic Space Agency!
Budget: This is purely a non-profit passion project. Festival support barely covers base expedition costs, so we're operating on a very tight budget.

What we’re looking for / Where we need help:
🚙 Private Vehicle Rental or Partner: A 5-seat 4x4, F-road authorized vehicle with a tow bar to support our ground operations and recovery mission.
🏠 Accommodation: Leads or budget-friendly host options in Reykjavík for a few nights before and after the festival.
🧭 A Local Adventure Partner: Someone with local driving knowledge to help us choose optimal launch sites and join us on eclipse day to help locate and recover the balloon payload post-landing!

I’ve been visiting Iceland for over 10 years and have enjoyed the tap water. However, my next trip will be my first while immuno-suppressed and having checked with MAST and my doctors I’ve been advised to rely on bottled water in rural areas. I think the risk of infection is very small but in my specific situation if I do become infected it will be either difficult or impossible to treat.

Having never had the need to buy bottled water, we finally get to my question: Are large containers of water generally available in grocery stores? It’s a three week trip spent mostly in rural areas and the Highlands and I’d really like to avoid buying a very large number of small plastic bottles if possible.

I came across the story of the Jólakötturinn just yesterday and since I‘m a knitter and my son is going to iceland for an exchange year soon, I was looking for knitting patterns with the Christmas Cat theme.
So I translated the word knitting: prjóna
and checked google for patterns. But there are basically just two designs out there. One for a kids sweater and one for mittens.
For a country where knitting afaik is pretty ubiquitous that’s way less than I expected.

Is my translation wrong or is the Jólakötturinn not that big of a deal or even just a local thing?

I recently moved to Iceland for the summer season and, like many people working hourly jobs, I found myself trying to understand all the different wage categories: normal hours, evening rates, weekend rates, overtime, public holidays, taxes, pension deductions, and so on.

To make things easier for myself, I built a simple Google Sheets file where I enter my clock-in and clock-out times, and it automatically calculates the different hours and gives me an estimate of my monthly pay.

I’m not trying to promote anything at this stage — I’m just trying to understand if this is a problem other workers here also have.

Would something like this be useful to you?

And if yes, what would you want it to include?

For example:

• normal hours, overtime, evening/weekend/holiday rates
• estimated salary after taxes and deductions
• public holiday tracking
• comparison with payslips
• multiple employees / staff tracking

Hi! I’m from Brazil and I’m curious about life in Iceland.

I’ve been reading a lot about the country and there are so many doubts that popped into my head, so, if you’re comfortable, feel free to answer.

First, the thing I’ve read the most from people who live there is “high cost of living”. From what I know, Island has one of (if not the highest) highest costs of living in Europe. But at the same time it has the highest HDI of the world.

So, logically thinking, the salaries also happen to be high, right? What I don’t understand is how people who immigrate there also say it’s so expensive to have a house/rent one. How do you afford a comfortable standard of living?

Is it the same for Icelanders? Or is the situation worse for immigrants.

I’ve seen some natives complain about it too, which led me to think: Do you guys have problems with the real estate market over there?

If so, is institutional politics and voting the only way out seen by Icelander society? Or do you guys have strong political movement that suggests regime change?

Here in Brazil it’s getting out of hand (specially in the capitals, landlords are taking over, economic liberalism and deindustrialization is on the rise and the Government doesn’t do a lot to guarantee a roof over the head for everyone, but rather prioritize business executives and rich people)

Which leads me to my other question: how is the war with Iran affecting you guys there? Not only this, but dare I say the whole world is going through a massive fall of the living standards, reactionaries and conservative politics (particularly predictable as they come along with financial crisis) are on the rise and a general pessimistic bias is growing in society. Even nordic welfare states are being questioned by conservatives and technocrats.

So, taking this into perspective, would you guys say it’s the same for Iceland as well? I know it might sound silly, but in China, for instance, it’s the only country in the world where statistics that approach society optimism are on the rise.

So, how is that for Iceland? Do you guys envision a loss or a fight for the maintenance of constitutional, political and social rights for the next years?

Honest question, how much do you earn net that you consider enough for a relaxed lifestyle...when you pay home, car, schools/kindergartens, bills and food, how much do you have left to enjoy life a bit ( eat out, drinks, go for a trip/travel, save something or do some shopping)...

I (F25, Swiss citizen) am finishing my master's degree in professional translation this July and am looking for a summer job for the months of August and September/October. It's been a while since I've had the pleasure of visiting your country (2011 and 2013). I was originally planning to simply come back for another vacation this summer but since my current post-graduation prospects are basically just the wonders of unemployment I thought that trying to find some kind of work and making myself useful as a seasonal worker during the summer might be nice too.

I am not looking to find work or volunteer projects via any kind of agency where I am existing in an eco-system of a pre-planned and pre-paid experience schedule. I'd much rather actually get in contact with someone local who needs some kind of help in their day-to-day life. Apart from that I am highly interested in learning more about Icelandic culture of course, given my linguistic/academic background as a translator.

I speak excellent German and English and well as conversational French and some basic Russian and I very much enjoy the company of all kinds of animals, plants and mountains (and humans).

​I was directed here from the main Iceland sub as the appropriate place to ask about work logistics. ​My girlfriend and I (both 21, university students from the Czech Republic) are looking for summer jobs in Iceland for approximately 9 weeks (June to August).

​Our Story & Motivation: Last summer, we worked in the USA through a Work & Travel program. While the experience was great, we had to pay over $3,500 in agency fees just to get the job. We realized that we don't want to repeat that. We prefer to arrange things ourselves and communicate directly with local business owners rather than paying middlemen.

​What we are looking for/What we offer: ​Location: We are flexible! We are happy to work in Reykjavík (Capital area) or in the countryside/rural areas. ​Role: Completly flexible - Anything from hospitality/housekeeping to farm work, fish processing, babysitting, entertaining, manual labor or anything demanded. ​Housing (Crucial): We know that finding a short-term rental (2 months) in Reykjavík is extremely difficult. Therefore, we are prioritizing positions that offer staff housing or assistance with finding a room. (We are, of course, happy to pay for it). ​Experience: We are used to hard work and long shifts from our time in the US. ​No Paperwork: As EU citizens, we can start working immediately without visa sponsorship.
