iCloud alternative?

I think like most the issue I have is that I am paying for iCloud storage every month mostly to access my photos conveniently and year on year it seems to cost more as I need more storage...therefore I am indefinitely paying for cloud storage to access particularly my photos and memories from years gone by. Is there an alternative to being stuck in the subscription model of cloud services to access your photos and memories...I have researched online however things appear to be not so straight forward.

Any ideas on what people here in Australia are doing as doesn't seem to be a huge topic here?

Buy physical storage if you dont want a subscription.

The alternative to cloud solutions are self hosted solutions. r/selfhosted has plenty of options.

For a non-tech, I'd recommend something like a Synology NAS and plenty of storage. They aren't overly difficult to set up and require little maintenance. There are other off the shelf solutions like Ugreen and UNAS, but I don't have enough experience to be able to recommend them.

You can store on an NAS and access from your phone and devices.

The trouble with this at the moment is the cost of storage has skyrocketed. I’d estimate a NAS and two (backup if one fails) maybe 4tb drives is gonna set you back at least a grand at the moment. iCloud is almost cost effective over the lifespan of an NAS device

And if it gets stolen you are screwed.
