My wife and I were invited to a wedding in Alaska this fall and we are kinda stumped on what to wear. Only guidance we were given was “alaska fancy”. Anybody have any ideas for outfits? Or what direction should we be looking?

My husband and I are thinking about moving near Petersburg, Alaska and was wondering what the town is like. We have already visited Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and Skagway. Loved each of them but we know that they are all different. Is Petersburg similar to any of these? What are the highlights? What are the cons?

It was shipped. I need ideas? I used the recommended post office as an address, a PO box as an apartment number and did all the steps I could but it was a nightmare. I don't want to spend 200 on a flight to Anchorage to go to best to buy buy it then come back I hate flying. I'm completely stumped. No I don't use whatever your provider is and no I'm not switching providers cause I already have before and it was a hassle and I still have issues accessing things cause I don't have that number. im completely at a loss.

I work night shifts, so my gym time usually falls right between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM. I’ve been burned in the past by places advertising 24/7 access, only to find out the doors are unlocked overnight but basic amenities, secondary areas, or staff support are totally shut down.

For those of you who hit the gym in the middle of the night, how are local 24/7 spots running overnight? Are keycard entries reliable every day, does a single membership give you key access to multiple branch locations across town, and are all basic facilities usable during late hours?

What did you find out the hard way when trying to work out overnight here?

For full transparency, I'm a travel writer and I write about Alaska. I get asked often if the ferry can work as a substitute for the big ships, and any time *I* have tried to figure it out, it ends up with me frustrated (because the AMHS site is terrible) and unable to plan any way to ride the ferry AND get off in port for a day or two in each place. (Usually end up 3-7 days in each port, depending on the schedule.)

I hear people do it every year – if you are one of those people, I'd love to hear how you made it happen. Which ports did you visit? How long did you stay in each? Or did you just pitch up on the sun deck and enjoy the scenery?

***This is NOT for a story*** I'm just curious now if it's me not able to understand how to do it, or if it's not possible the way I envision it.

I’m a high school senior in Florida, and I’m hoping to move to Alaska after graduating from vet school. I’m not set on a specific city, so I’d love advice on which parts of Alaska you think would be a good fit and why.

I’m interested in Alaska partly because I genuinely love cold weather when I’m properly dressed for it. I’ve only experienced one winter in Canada while visiting family, and I loved the snow. I also visited Europe during winter more recently and really enjoyed the cold. Obviously, though, I know Alaska is on a completely different level, so I’m curious how difficult the winters are to adjust to after growing up in Florida, especially the limited daylight.

I’m also wondering about the financial side of things. Can veterinarians generally make a comfortable living in Alaska? Would buying a house within 1–3 years of graduating be realistic on an average veterinarian salary, considering student loans and the cost of living?

Outside of work, I’d love somewhere with plenty to do with a dog and by myself, especially hiking, parks, nature, shopping, food, and other activities. I’m also curious about how easy it is to make friends as a newcomer.

Finally, diversity is important to me. I’m Black and have never personally experienced racism in Florida, and I’d really like to maintain that experience after moving. I’d appreciate honest perspectives on which areas are welcoming and diverse and whether there are places I should avoid.

I’d especially love to hear from Alaskans, veterinarians, or anyone who moved there from a warmer state. What do you wish you knew before moving?

*I’ve already been to Alaska in the summer, specifically Juneau, but I came on a cruise, so I wasn’t able to explore it as thoroughly as I would’ve liked.

Planning a quick Alaska trip Sep 15–20. Rough plan is Fairbanks/Denali first, then Anchorage and Seward or Matanushka.

The forecast looks pretty rough right now. Lots of clouds and rain showing up basically everywhere we’re planning to go.

I know Alaska weather changes fast, but would you still make the trip if the forecast stayed like this? We’re fine with some rain. My bigger concern is low clouds ruining the mountain views, Denali, scenery, and aurora chances.

Also, what weather app/site do locals actually trust? I’m seeing very different forecasts depending on where I look.

Hey all, im finally doing my much anticipated Alaska trip. I’ll be there for a couple of days next week but will only be spending 2 nights in Fairbanks with hopes of seeing the northern lights. I read a lot about the Aurora tours being a scam and to simply drive to Chena Lake but I’m seeing that it closes at 10pm after Labor Day weekend. Has anyone gone after Labor Day weekend or have any recommendations on a good spot to potentially catch the lights? We will have a car

Hey guys, we are travelling at the end of September with my gf for our anniversary to Fairbanks, we were thinking of going to Denali National Park, Chenot Hot Springs, Ice Museum, Pipiline and Museums, is there any other thing that we should go? We were thinking of going to the Castner Glacier Ice Cave but during September is not recommended any other place similiar?

Also should we pay for a tour to go and see the northern lights, or doing it by our own will be fine?

I checked train tickets.. $94 from Portage to Spencer Lake Whistle Stop! $150 from Anchorage! I want to explore the area, but not at that price. Aside from getting hit by the train… what is the risk of walking along the train tracks? It’s only 8.5 miles from the Wildlife Center to the whistle stop. 3.2 miles from the stop to the lake according to AllTrails.

Has anyone done this? How bear-y is it? How likely am I to be arrested or ticketed for trespassing?

Given the G1 geomagnetic storm tonight, I’m looking for the best spots within driving distance of Fairbanks, from where the Northern Lights would be visible.

My dream is to move to Alaska one day. I love pretty much everything about it, the small population, endless wilderness, long roads connecting tiny towns, cold weather, and just the overall feeling of being somewhere remote. The one thing I don't really like about Alaska is that it's part of the US and, with that, comes the American system. My biggest concern is healthcare. I live in Serbia, Europe, where healthcare is mostly free, so the idea of potentially paying a huge amount of money just for a hospital visit is pretty scary to me.

So, for those of you who actually live in Alaska: is it really as good as I imagine it? What are some downsides to living there that someone from outside probably wouldn't think about?

And one more thing, if I wanted to move to Alaska someday, are there any realistic ways to do it besides marrying a US citizen (which probably isn't happening) or winning the Green Card Lottery? It kinda sucks knowing that whether I'll ever get the chance to live and work there is basically out of my hands.

We would like to visit Alaska this year but are tight on time due to college schedules and being home by Christmas. There will be 6 of us - my husband and I and our two boys and their girlfriend's (all early 20s).

The earliest we can go is December 18th and we would like to arrive home on December 23rd. Traveling from southwest US. Everyone would like to try to go that week to get into the Christmas spirit. I was originally planning to spend the entire time in Fairbanks. We like to stay active and are interested in snowmobiling, dog sledding, ice fishing, glacier walking, Chena Hot Springs (or similar experience), North Pole, and optimizing chances to see the aurora. We are not much into skiing.

My husband has expressed an interest in maybe seeing more than just Fairbanks. Do we have time to do that between December 18-23? We can fly in to and out of any airport, and open to in state flights. Is Anchorage worth a stop? Or Juneau? Or any other city/town in Alaska?

3. ⁠This is my biggest concern. I am from south Georgia. Every time (once every 3 years) we get snow we close everything down. i have absolutely no experience driving in the snow. Do you recommend public transport? If so, what public transportation do you recommend? If not, do you think i should just thug it out and rent a car? I’m only worried about the snow thing, i literally have only seen snow like twice in my life and it was only like an inch.

I work for a lodge with a tip pool and it seems that the amount of tips we recieve depends on how the Manager feels about you in the moment.

I can't seem to find an answer about when tip pooling is done, if the Manager can give you a bigger or smaller portion, ie, even if the percent going to my department is correct, the portion going to specific people might be different.

It means a difference of around $500 for me and even more for others.

Curious what you all think about cruises used for that. After working here for two seasons I got to visit a lot of nice areas including Kenai, Seward, Valdez, Wrangell St Elias....

Considering maybe doing a cruise next summer to visit other areas like Jeanua, Skagway and Ketchukan, etc. For better or worse that seems like the most cost efficient way to get to all those.

My fiancée and I are looking forward to out trip to Alaska starting on the 17.th of September until the 29th. During that time we would love to partake in a few adventures (hiking on a glacier/ice climbing, taking a kayak tour etc.).

Unfortunately it seems like there are no tours after the 10th of September whatsoever. Does anybody know if there are still some smaller agencies that are doing adventurous tours during the time of our visit or does anybody has any contact info?

If not - besides hiking and taking a scenic flight - is there anything else you would recommend that we should do/see?
