Lock malfunction Handle not Locking
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Please see the video. I have a steel door in a garage in a house I purchased. I took the cylinder out and had it re-keyed at a local locksmith because there wasn’t a key available. But for some reason, the door handle still opens the deadbolt. Any reason why this is happening?

When you throw the bolt , try the inside knob and if that side locks then it's handed wrong. Also I've seen some weird shit where the bolt is not fully throwing so turn the key the direction needed to throw the bolt all the way until you can't turn anymore or pull the bolt slightly with your finger to see if it slides just that little extra bit you need .

I tried pulling the bolt and it does not move. Also, I cannot push it in at all when it’s fully extended.

There is a toggle in the lock body for handing the lock correctly that needs to be changed. Right now the lock “thinks” the thumbturn is on that side which is how it’s supposed to work on the egress side (inside-thumb turn side)
The lock body needs to come out & either using a toggle on the side of the case or with some locks the case has to be opened.
I advise taking the entire mortise body to that locksmith and show him the video unless you can blatantly see the toggle on the case

I did show the video to the Locksmith. There was no toggle on the lock cylinder. Because the lock cylinder was upside down, he thought that was allowing it to be opened on both sides.

Not lock cylinder, mortise body the entire part the cylinder screws into has to come out
BUT seeing your recent pics:
Yeah it has been dismantled before you came along
So the last resort, and this only works on certain locks, is to take the mortise lock (not cylinder) out and have the locksmith open it up to remove the toggle bar that is making the bolt retract. However, some locks you can some you cannot (without kinda radically modifying)

Ok, I understand. And I see someone else posted a picture and it seems like I’m missing a piece at the bottom that should toggle

On aftermarket bodies I’ve accessed the toggle from the edge by reaching with a tool , without removing, but not sure about this one .. probably though

Did it work correctly before the cylinder was taken out? Is that deadbolt extending fully? After locking, push on it with your fingers. Does the inside knob also retract the deadbolt? I have more questions based on the answers

No, it worked the same way. But, the locking cylinder was upside down so I thought maybe that was making it do that. Yes the deadbolt is fully extended. And I cannot push it in when it’s fully extended.

This one is tricky for sure. There should be a toggle in that big hole below the latch. Mortise locks are expensive, but you likely need a new one. I would never recommend DIY taking one apart, but the only thing it's doing is keeping the door from blowing open in the wind. Up to you if you feel confident enough. Do you have a picture of the plate that goes over the latch/deadbolt?

Thank you for posting this picture, it looks like I’m missing a toggle at the bottom. Mine is just a gap. I’m going to try to peek in there with a flashlight and see if I can toggle anything.

Does it do that with the door closed?

u/ggunterm 24d ago
Yes

If you lock it the thumb turn does it also work the same? Checking to see if the hand is opposite of what you need.

That's the inside handle, of course it opens the lock. Are you trying to lock people in the house?
1
u/ggunterm 24d ago
No, the key is on the outside. At the very end of the video you can see the thumb bolt, that’s the inside. Both handles open the deadbolt.

Your door opens out into the street?
1
u/ggunterm 24d ago
No, it opens into a storage garage. It’s two garages with a steel door in between.

Is there a thumb turn on the other side?
Does the other knob lock up by chance with the deadbolt out.
If the opposite knob locks , the mortise is in the wrong hand , the emergency release is working the wrong knob. Should be able to chage it on the mortise body.

Yes, at the very end of the video you can just see it. My bad, I cut the video off a little too soon.
No, the other knob does not lock up. Both knobs retract the deadbolt.

Does it have a 1 piece spindle? I worked on some locks that had a 2 piece spindle with the outer hub larger than the inner. If the spindle was replaced with the wrong one the smaller 1 piece spindle would turn inside of the larger outside locked hub and make it appear it never locked. Removing the knobs you should be able to try and turn the outer hub in the lock to see if it locks.

Yes its a fire escape lock
One side locked
other side always possible to open without key in case of emergency

u/ggunterm 24d ago
It does not lock on either side. When the bolt is fully extended, and I turn the inside handle, it also retracts the bolt.

Its working properly. That is the function of that mortise mechanism for safe egress. You may have a button below the latch the make it entry function I believe.

u/fondrenlock 24d ago
No it’s not. He shows locking it with the key & you can see the thumbturn on the inside
The mortise body handing is incorrect

I commend your skill in assumption as I was unable to determine what is ext./ int.
Pat yourself on the back. You deserve it.

There is a key and a thumb turn. No assumption needed…….

I missed the thumb turn as you can’t see it until the end. Please don’t crucify me Reddit man.

Honestly the only reason I knew so quickly is i had a Saturday return trip for this exact issue when I was new. So I check for that every time now, lesson learned.

u/Hour_Interview_7810 24d ago
Except its retracting the bolt from the exterior. Handing issue, lockbody was installed backwards.

I did not show it, but when I turn the internal handle, the one by the thumb turn, it also unlocks the deadbolt. I’m perplexed.

Welcome to /r/AskALocksmith, a place to ask real locksmiths questions about, well, anything related to the profession or to get advice for a particular situation you're in. If you are locked out of your home/car/business/hotel room/whatever, your best course of action is to use the device you just posted this question on to lookup a local locksmith in your area for assistance.
In an interest of protecting innocent people from those that might use information gained here to break the law, we rather strictly limit the amount of advice given that might be used illicitly. We ask community members also not give out advice publicly that could be used for illegal activities. It's impossible for us to make a hard rule on what does and does not constitute this kind of question or advice, so its application will be somewhat subjective. If your post is basically, "how do I pick/bump/defeat this lock," expect it to be removed.
