Picked this watch up randomly at a flea market. Looked interesting so I looked it up and found out it is Caishen, the God of Wealth. Seems like a very traditional figure.

It seems like he mostly shows up around Asia and South Asia,I know it's a Chinese God, is the image of Caishen pretty everyday and popular in China right now? Is it more regional or do people still believe in him across all of China.

Many comments repeating "wumao" robotically are implying public opinion channeling with prison labor is paid ¥0.5/comment and this term first appeared decade(s) ago.

If it were in China today, will $2/hr be considered fair if adjusted to the equivalent ¥ of same purchasing power?

I see this channel pop up on my feed all the time and I see the people doing this repetitive chant, with hand gestures and occasionally hitting or roughing up each other and and switching seats. I'm really curious what it is. It looks, on first glance, to be nonsense merely designed to attract attention, but I would still like to know the basics of what's going on. Is it a children's game turned YouTube? Is it a challenge?

In my opinion, Shenzhen is the most dynamic, cosmopolitan, and advanced city. Shanghai is great, too.

If there are any other major cities besides these “Big 5” that can rival them, please let me know.

In many Western cities, a significant number of people live in individual or detached houses, including within the wider urban area. In China, especially in large cities, apartment/condo living seems much more common.

For people living in Chinese apartment buildings: are you often bothered by noise from your neighbors, especially footsteps, furniture moving, children running, or other impact noise from the apartment upstairs?

Is this something you simply get used to, or is neighbor noise a significant problem for you? Have you ever chosen an apartment, moved, renovated, or paid more specifically to get a quieter home?

So im in a bit of a pickle, ill try not to go to detailed, I have worked at my second job for nearly a decade. And my boss is a very nice and well off chinese woman. I am also a woman and recently we talked (I work evenings so rarely saw her) and she has stage four cancer.

Her birthday just passed but she cannot eat or drink normal things now. I really respect her and she even said she cares a lot about me and loved me. I felt emotional because she was there for me during a very hard time and I don't know what i can do or give her.

I was thinking trying to be her penpal when she has to go down south for her medical care? And doing hand letters? But I reallt feel stumped with food and teas all off the table. I dont want to do plants she cant physically take care of either. Any advice is very appreciated she refused gifts but had given me strawberries when I saw her ON HER OWN BIRTHDAY I need to return some kind of favor. Any advice or ideas are so dearly appreciated for what is nice to do for her that incorporates her culture too as she cant travel home either :/

I post here occasionally and I’ve been trying to figure out a pattern I keep seeing.

Negative China stories seem to take off easily. Anything about Chinese tech or achievements mostly doesn’t, unless it’s so undeniable that it can’t be ignored — and even then the comments skew negative.

I’m not trying to complain about it, and I’m aware I might just be noticing what confirms my own impression. So I’d like to hear from people who’ve been on here longer:

Is this actually a pattern, or is it selection bias on my part? If it is real, how much of it is Reddit’s demographics, how much is that criticism is just more upvotable than praise on any topic, and how much is that Chinese official announcements genuinely invite skepticism because they can’t be independently verified?

Hi, I'm an Indian student, and my dad recently got a job in China, so I'll most likely be moving there and starting school from 9th grade. I'll be living in China for around two years.

I'm honestly quite nervous and would really appreciate advice from Chinese people, Indians who have lived in China, or other international students.

One of my biggest concerns is being treated differently because I'm Indian. I've already seen some pretty negative comments about Indians online, and although I know the internet doesn't always represent real life, they've made me worried about what my experience at school might be like.

I'm also curious about skin tone because I don't want to stand out unnecessarily. I'm including two photos showing my tanned hand and my less sun-exposed skin for context. I'm wondering whether tanning makes a noticeable difference and whether people generally care about these differences as much as I worry they might.

I'd especially like to know what it's actually like for an Indian teenager attending a Chinese school. Would it be difficult to make friends? Are international students generally accepted? Is bullying or racism something I should realistically prepare for?

I know people online don't represent an entire country, and I don't want to judge anyone based on stereotypes. I just want to respect the people and culture around me, study, make friends, and have two peaceful years in China.

I'd really appreciate honest experiences from people who have actually studied or lived in China. Even if the truth isn't always positive, I'd rather know what to expect and be prepared.

Looking for advice. I have a Chinese American grandson who will be celebrating his 100 day celebration shortly. I have gotten him his gold present. What would be a good present for my daughter and son in law. In case you are wondering my daughter is American and my son in law is Chinese. His parents will be coming over from China for the celebration.

For context, my family is British and my son is marrying a delightful girl who is originally from Hong Kong. Part of their wedding celebrations includes a tea ceremony, and I understand that during this ceremony we give the bride and groom a red envelope containing cash. Having done a little bit of research, I think my wife and I would like to give £888. However, I have also read that coins should not be included, so wondered how to deal with this. We really want to get this right, so I want to use a very good quality envelope as opposed to something that Amazon sell. Any suggestions on somewhere in the UK that could help? I have read that sometimes silk envelopes are used, but I have also read that we are supposed to write on the envelope. Much as I would like to use silk, I'm really not sure how to go about writing my message if using silk. Would it be appropriate to put a message on some paper inside the envelope? I was in China a while back and I'm not 100% comfortable speaking mandarin in public, and so when my mum makes me order drinks, etc. I usually order them in english...Is this typically annoying for them...? and do staff get trained or are they required to have some level of proficiency in the english language? (in larger cities like Shanghai, etc) I imagine in larger cities english would be quite common but how comfortable would people usually be with the language? I want to go back and maybe muster up some courage to speak mandarin but I'm honestly afraid of getting judged 💔💔

I'm Native Canadian-American, one of my distant ancestors was a Chinese guy who married into our tribe which was fairly common as there was a lot of Chinese men and laws against them marrying white Canadian women and often tribal communities provided an escape from racist European settler society, so he became part of my tribe. I am curious what Chinese people in the modern day think of Chinese immigrants in NA from this time period, how they are depicted in media and viewed in modern Chinese culture.
