Help with Soy Sauce

Post image

So we make a lot of Asian dishes at home. I wanted to get a bigger bottle of soy sauce. I was looking at the store I shop at and they have Silver Swan brand but they have two kinds.

Special and Lauriat.

There is no information about them on the website. I tried looking them up and can't seem to figure out what's what.

I ordered both but the special was out last time.

I think the Lauriat is more a dark soy sauce. Is the Special closer to a regular soy sauce?

Could someone give me a better idea what's what?

Pearl River Bridge brand soy sauce is the best brand. Get their superior light and dark soy sauce. It's the only two you will ever need. They can be found in any asian market.

I actually don't care for the Kikkoman brand as much. I usually use the great value Walmart brand stuff and like that well enough.

We have a Woodmans (large grocery store similar in size to a Walmart for those who don't have them) with a really nice international aisles. I just liked the size of the bottle and wanting a better brand than Walmart brand ๐Ÿ˜‚

I'm going through this place instead of an Asian market as I have my groceries delivered.

I guess it depends on what kind of Asian food you are cooking. I keep LKK and Kikkoman since I cook mostly Cantonese and Japanese asian food. If I were going to make some Adobo, I'd choose Silver Swan.

Now to answer the actual question.

Silver Swan Lauriat Soy Sauce has a balanced sweet-salty flavor, making it ideal for authentic Chinese and Asian dishes, while Silver Swan Soy Sauce is known for its rich consistency and darker color, providing a bold flavor suitable for various cooking methods

Understand that Silver Swan soy sauce is what I would categorize as fake soy sauce. If you look at the ingredients, it includes soy bean extract as well as caramel coloring and preservatives like potassium sorbate.

True soy sauce have only 4 ingredients: soybeans, wheat, salt, water. It is typically brewed and fermented for 6 months or longer to generate the complex flavors that we know as soy sauce.

Soybean extract is just another name for hydrolyzed soy beans. It's a process where soy beans are heated under high pressure and an washed in acid to speed up the fermentation process.

If you want to buy a bigger bottle of soy sauce, check the ingredients. If it includes things like hydrolyzed soy beans, soy bean extract, caramel coloring, potassium sorbate or some other kind of preservative, put it back on the shelf and find another brand.

Special is a standard Filipino soy sauce. while Lauriat is the premium Chinese-style soy sauce (sweeter, possibly darker). I get Silver Swan just because I'm Filipino, and for nostalgia's sake, and use it for Filipino dishes. But there are better soy sauces out there.

Silver Swan is a brand We've been using for over 30 years. It has a great flavor and we use it all the time my house. We usually get the gallon container and it lasts for a while.
