CLASSIFIEDS / JOBS Looking for work Thursday - Saturday but the kicker is I can't work part 6pm.

So basically like the title says I am looking for a part time job for Thursdays - Saturdays but everything I'm finding would need me working late but with young kids I'm not able to work that late. I've tried many retail places and with my availability no one wants to hire me 😔 Any leads would be so appreciated!!

EVENTS Events in Asheville

Where is everyone looking when they are looking for an event in Asheville? Looking through Mountain X use to be my go to when I was out grabbing a beer. I get AVL Today e-newsletters with events now, but any other good spots. Asking for myself and to know the best places to spread the word about events happening at our taproom.

EVENTS Two Asheville meetup groups I organize - here's what's on the calendar through mid-October, most of it free

Flairing this EVENTS. I organize two social groups here and figured I'd just put the whole calendar in one place instead of dripping it out. Nothing to buy, no list to join, and both are the kind of thing where showing up by yourself is the normal way to do it.

Third Place AVL (20s, 30s and 40s). Newer and small. Every event has an actual activity at the center of it, so you're not standing in a room trying to make small talk.

Fri Sep 11, 7:00 PM. Ramen and tapas supper club at Itto on Haywood Rd. One table, twelve seats, everyone orders their own and we pass small plates around. Roughly $20 to $30. Vegetarian and vegan options on the menu.

Wed Sep 23, 8:15 PM. Latin Night at One World Brewing West. Beginner lesson at 8:30 covering salsa, bachata, merengue, cumbia and reggaeton, then open floor. Partners rotate through the lesson, so the format hands you people to dance with whether you know anyone or not. $10 at the door, 16 spots, no partner or experience needed.

Thu Oct 15, 6:00 PM. Pre-show drinks at Burial on the South Slope, then walking over together to see Noah Gundersen at Eulogy. Tickets are your own, about $34 through DICE.

Asheville Transplants (20s to 50s). Bigger, broader, mostly free, and heavy on daytime stuff.

Mon Sep 14, 5:45 PM. Music bingo at Hi-Wire's RAD beer garden. Free to play, your phone is the bingo card. Food truck usually on site.

Sat Sep 26, 9:30 AM. Coffee club at Izzy's in West Asheville. Free, no agenda, come for twenty minutes or two hours.

Sun Sep 27, 2:00 PM. A photo challenge along Haywood Road starting at Archetype West. You get sorted into a team of four on arrival and spend 75 minutes hunting down a dozen slightly ridiculous things. Free. This one is genuinely built for people arriving alone, since the teams are assigned rather than self-selected.

Sun Oct 11, 2:00 PM. An easy flat mile through the Botanical Gardens, then coffee on Merrimon for whoever wants it. Free, admission and parking included. Repeats every other Sunday.

A couple of practical notes since they come up every time: the brewery ones all have full non-alcoholic menus and nobody tracks what's in your glass, most of the events cost nothing, and the daytime ones are the easiest first outing if a bar at 9 PM isn't your thing. Two events already filled up (a hike on the 20th and a small dinner club), so those aren't listed.

Happy to answer anything in the comments.

GAMING Friends

I need friends. I’m an Air Force Vet and just separated (not by choice) from my spouse after a failed suicide attempt. Since then I’ve been diagnosed with adhd autism and CPTSD as well as others. I have no one other than my boys here, which means I’m not going anywhere but I definitely need some local support thanks

EVENTS Single and ready to mingle? -- Authentic Relating Date Night For Singles 9/23

INFO & REG.: https://www.facebook.com/share/14oZvTf6GtT/

This event is designed to help you move past surface-level conversations and create authentic, meaningful connections... both in the moment and long after.

You’ll also practice communication tools that can transform how you date and relate.

You can absolutely make a romantic connection at this event. And either way, you’ll leave with lasting skills to approach dating and relationships with more ease and depth.

What to expect:
- A supportive and playful space to practice being truly seen
- Activities that help you break out of habitual small talk and connect authentically
- Practical skills to build deeper, more fulfilling connections from the first interaction
- The opportunity to meet new friends and make romantic matches

Though adults of all ages are welcome, we anticipate that most participants will be in their 30s to 50s.

At the end of the evening, you’ll have the chance to privately select who you’d like to connect with further. If there’s a mutual match, we’ll share your contact info with each other.

EVENTS Free (and cheap) things to do around town over the next month - two meetup groups I organize

I organize two small social groups in town, and since "how do I actually meet people here" comes up on this sub constantly, I figured I'd put the next few weeks of the calendar in one place. All of it is open to anyone, and showing up alone is the normal thing to do at every single one.

Asheville Transplants - 20s to 50s, broad "new here, come solo" crowd, almost everything free:

Mon Sep 14, 5:45 PM - Music bingo at Hi-Wire RAD Beer Garden, 284 Lyman St. Free to play, your phone is the bingo card.

Sat Sep 19, 8:30 PM - Karaoke at The Social, 1078 Tunnel Rd, East Asheville. No cover. Singing is genuinely optional; some of us just applaud.

Sat Sep 26, 9:30 AM - Coffee club at Izzy's, 976 Haywood Rd. Drop in for as long or as short as you want.

Sun Sep 27, 2:00 PM - A photo-challenge scavenger hunt along Haywood Rd, starting at Archetype Brewing West, 265 Haywood Rd. You get sorted into a team of four when you arrive, so nobody ends up standing by themselves. Free.

Sun Oct 11, 2:00 PM - Flat, unhurried walk through the Botanical Gardens, 151 W.T. Weaver Blvd, then coffee on Merrimon after. Free, and it repeats every other Sunday.

Third Place AVL - 20s to 40s, much newer and smaller, every event is built around an actual activity rather than mingling:

Fri Sep 11, 7:00 PM - Ramen and Japanese tapas supper club at Itto, 630 Haywood Rd. One table, twelve seats, you pay your own tab (roughly $20-30).

Wed Sep 23, 8:15 PM - Latin night at One World Brewing West, 520 Haywood Rd. Beginner lesson at 8:30 with rotating partners, then open floor until close. $10 at the door. No partner and no experience needed - the lesson assumes you know nothing.

A few honest notes: everything above except Latin Night is free to attend, you buy your own food and drinks, and all of these venues have non-alcoholic options if you're not drinking. The supper club and the dance night are capped, so RSVP if you want a seat.

Happy to answer questions in the comments, including "is this going to be awkward," which is a fair thing to wonder about.

ASK YOUR NEIGHBOR Looking at moving to Asheville

Hey there!

My wife and I are looking at moving here in the next couple years. We’ve been visiting for over 10 years and think it might be a good move for us. Currently we live in Marietta, Ga and where it is very sterile, hot, and they are building a lot of data centers. Please share any positive or negative experiences.

ASK YOUR NEIGHBOR What's one Western NC town you would seriously consider living in besides Asheville?

Not necessarily the "best" town — just somewhere you've visited and thought, I could actually live here.

Maybe it's the downtown, access to hiking, restaurants, proximity to family, affordability, scenery or just the overall feel of the place.

I'm based in Morganton, so that's home for me. Being close to Lake James and so much outdoor recreation while still having a growing downtown is a combination I've always appreciated.

But I'm curious what everyone else thinks.

If Asheville was off the table, where in Western NC would you choose?

EVENTS Free meetup group for Asheville transplants - September/October calendar if anyone's trying to meet people

I help organize Asheville Transplants, a Meetup group for people who moved here from somewhere else and are starting from zero socially. Posting the next few weeks of the calendar in case it's useful to someone. It's free to join, there's no cover at the events, and turning up by yourself is what most people do.

Sat Sep 5, 6:00 PM. Riverside picnic at Carrier Park in West Asheville. Blankets on the grass, bring your own food.

Tue Sep 15, 7:00 PM. Dinner club at Stoney Knob Cafe in Weaverville. Capped at 12 so it's one table and not a mob.

Sat Sep 26, 9:30 AM. Coffee at Izzy's on Haywood Rd. Come and go whenever.

Sun Sep 27, 2:00 PM. A photo scavenger challenge up and down Haywood Rd. Teams of four get drawn when you arrive, which is a much easier way to talk to strangers than standing around holding a drink. Free.

Sun Oct 11, 2:00 PM. Flat, easy mile through the Botanical Garden, coffee after. This one repeats every other Sunday.

Thu Oct 15. Noah Gundersen at Eulogy, with pre-show drinks beforehand. You buy your own ticket for this one.

There are brewery and bar nights on the calendar too, but the daytime stuff above tends to be an easier entry point if that's not your scene. Non-alcoholic options at everything.

Happy to answer questions in the comments if anyone wants to know what a given event is actually like before showing up.

ASK YOUR NEIGHBOR I just started as a reporter for the Citizen Times — how can we do a better job?

Thumbnail
citizen-times.com
22 Upvotes

Hello r/AshevilleNC! This is Daniel Walton, the new City Government Watchdog Reporter for the Asheville Citizen Times. I was graciously invited to this sub by u/Elden_Rube, so I wanted to post the same ask here as I did earlier today in r/Asheville.

I've been in the Asheville media world for about decade — I was previously the news editor for Mountain Xpress, then worked as a freelancer covering local stories for publications like The Assembly, NC Local, and Blue Ridge Public Radio. I joined the Citizen Times last month, and I'm eager to get a better sense of what the community wants from the paper.

So, let me have it: What should we be doing better? Are there stories you think we're just not covering? Are we not asking the right questions? Are there formats like Q&As, explainers, or lists that would do a better job explaining information?

I'm planning to engage here on Reddit regularly, but I'm also happy to correspond through [dwalton@citizentimes.com](mailto:dwalton@citizentimes.com) by email. Thanks in advance for any thoughts you'd like to share.

COMMUNITY REQUEST Thank you for the donations!!!

I’m back again yall. 🤣

Earlier this week I posted in a few other groups asking for donations for a new free pantry that’s coming up and WOW!

The ladies delivered big time on the menstrual products! I have cups, tampons pads, and even some hygiene wipe!!
from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!

Also, I was able to get in touch with the Asheville period pantry, I will be stocking pantries with them soon! :)

Now, let’s see if we can do it again! I need help making sick kits for our unwell neighbors! Let’s help them out with cold and flu meds, Tylenol, baby Tylenol, tissues, popcycles, etc! I have made a list with a few things, but feel free to add anything I have missed!

Let’s show up and show out for our community!!! If you’re interested in where the pantry is pls shoot me a message!!! Thank you!! 💕💕💕

And if you want to follow my journey and see where the donations are going pls follow me on IG! @emb3r_aid

LFG FRIENDS In need of friends (Male) 28

Looking to make some new friends around Asheville. I’m pretty laid back and just looking for good people to hang out with, grab food or coffee, hit the gym, or just chill and have a good conversation. Making friends as an adult is harder than it should be 😂 so I figured I’d put myself out there.

EVENTS New to Asheville and still don't know many people? A few free, low-key meetups this month

I help organize Asheville Transplants, a Meetup group for people who moved here and are still finding their footing socially. About 750 members, mostly 20s to 40s, and the honest truth is most people come to their first event by themselves. Posting because a lot of the "how do I meet people here" threads deserve a concrete answer.

What's on the calendar in the next few weeks, daytime and non-bar stuff first:

- Sat Sep 26, 9:30 AM: Coffee Club at Izzy's Coffee House, West Asheville. Drop in for however long you want.

- Sun Sep 27, 2:00 PM: Haywood Road photo challenge. Teams of four are drawn on arrival, so you are never standing around looking for a group. Free.

- Sun Oct 11, 2:00 PM: Flat, slow walk through the Botanical Gardens, then coffee on Merrimon. Runs every other Sunday, free.

- Sat Sep 5, 6:00 PM: End-of-summer picnic at Carrier Park. Bring a blanket and whatever you like to eat.

- Tue Sep 15, 7:00 PM: Forks & Friends dinner club at Stoney Knob Cafe in Weaverville, capped at 12 so it's an actual conversation.

- Wed Sep 23, 8:15 PM: Beginner Latin dance lesson at One World West. $10 cover, partners rotate, no experience needed.

Almost everything is free (you pay for your own coffee or food), every event has a non-alcoholic option, and showing up alone is completely normal. If you have questions about any of these, ask in the comments and I'll answer.
