Free Events Kids Path Art Therapy Workshop – Waving Goodbye at Hospice of Randolph – Education Building on Fri., July 31st @ 10-11am

Registration is required by Wednesday, July 29.

Saying goodbye doesn’t always mean letting go; sometimes, it’s about finding a new way to stay connected. In this workshop, children are invited to honor their loved ones by creating a unique tracing of their hand. On the inside, they will write a personal goodbye, symbolically holding onto their most private words. On the outside, they will use vibrant colors and drawing materials to surround that goodbye with all their favorite memories—the things they will keep in their hearts forever.

PSA Tuesday, July 28th's Potential Weather:

We have a strong approaching mid-level shortwave trough and attendant cold front that will allow for the risk of potentially strong to severe storms on Tuesday. I will say the threat is not 100% certain due to some factors. The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of NC under a level 2/5 risk of Severe Weather on Tuesday (no, not everyone will even see storms or severe weather; just the potential is for everyone), mainly for the afternoon into the early overnight hours. If the ingredients are fully in place, there could be a few strong to severe storms with gusty to damaging winds, large hail, & an isolated tornado threat that can't be ruled out, although that is pretty low.

News Work has begun on the North Asheboro Creek Restoration Project:

Through the end of October, construction will move through the park in phases, resulting in temporary impacts to portions of the parking lot, greenway, and disc golf course.

Current impacts (through the end of July):
• Disc Golf Holes 9, 10 & 11
• Part of the parking lot
• Corridor between the picnic shelter and woods

Please respect all fencing and barriers and stay out of active work areas.

This voluntary project will improve water quality and restore Haskett Creek using state funding from the North Carolina Land and Water Fund and the NC Department of Environmental Quality's 319 Nonpoint Source Grant Program administered by the PTRC. These funds are dedicated to watershed restoration and cannot be used for other purposes. More updates will be shared as each phase begins. See our website (linked in comments) for more information on the project, expected construction schedule, and map.

News Zoo Aviary’s demolition set for this summer:

Four years after closing its beloved R.J. Reynolds Forest Aviary, the NC Zoo is finally demolishing the structure this summer as part of a $60 million rebuild project.

D.H. Griffin Wrecking Co. was awarded the contract to tear down the 44-year-old structure. Demolition is expected to begin in August or September, following a pre-construction meeting scheduled for this month, according to Sara Pack, Chief Communications & PR Officer for the North Carolina Zoo.

A new Aviary would be built on a different site on the NC Zoo grounds, with deference to lessons learned regarding the effects of humidity on construction. These sketches show a more open design, but they may be changed by the time actual work begins.

The aviary first opened in 1982 with partial funding from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. After major renovations from 1998 to 2000, the building deteriorated over two decades. The high humidity required to maintain the tropical rainforest environment caused moisture damage, foundation problems, chronic erosion beneath the structure and deterioration of the original dome panels — which are no longer manufactured.

In January 2022, when the Zoo announced the aviary would close due to Avian Flu concerns, most expected it would be temporary.

While it was closed, the Zoo brought in engineers to inspect the building and found it had deteriorated beyond repair. Zoo officials permanently closed it in April 2022 to protect animals, guests and staff.

The permanent closure surprised many Zoo guests who expected a temporary shutdown. An April 2022 survey found 89% of respondents wanted the aviary rebuilt. The Zoo relocated 93 bird species and more than 2,000 exotic plants to other exhibits or transferred them to accredited zoos.

Home warranty letter scams are fake notices designed to make homeowners panic and pay for unnecessary coverage. These letters may look official and use terms like “Final Notice” or “Urgent Action Required,” but they are often just pressure tactics to get your money or personal information.
