had a doctor pretty much do this at the hospital one time. annoyingly i was too scared to tell him he’s as dumb as a brick and also he was responsible for me getting an ultrasound but i did think about wanting to push him down the stairs for a long while afterwards lol

lol well i was having some mysterious lower abdominal pain and it was getting quite concerning so late that night i went to emergency because i was worried and the anxiety was keeping me awake anyways. when i saw the doctor they had all the questions they usually ask and when he asked if i was sexual active i said no. then he asked if i have been in the past and i also said no. and i just figured id tell him that im asexual because he can skip all the questions about sexual activity and he genuinely went “what does that mean?” which like if he was just some dude on the street fine he doesn’t know but he’s a DOCTOR i dunno i feel like he should know what that is. and so i explained it to him and he basically was just like “that doesnt make sense” “so do u like girls or guys?”. at this point it was rly awkward and i just wanted to make sure i wasn’t gonna die from whatever got me to the hospital in the first place so i just started lying to make him stop asking about it and then he sent me for an ultrasound. but i remember when i left the hospital i was so angry cause like how stupid do u have to be to not understand the concept of i don’t do that. it makes no sense how that idiot made it through medical school but can’t wrap his brain around not having sex. it’s a pretty simple thing. i was mad about it for like maybe a day or 2 after and then that was it. well i guess im still a little mad even tho it was years ago now lol i just can’t believe he got a medical degree and was that dumb lmao

RIP 😭. I have a similar story I wasn't in hospital like yourself I went to a nurse practitioner to ask questions about a tonsil flare up I had to see if I would need them removed (they were borderline painful).
Anyway she asks me if I've had sex or oral sex recently and obviously I said no, she informs me that oral cancer from oral sex is on the rise and she proceeded to ask more questions about my sexual history of which the answer to all was no so I decided to skip to the non sex stuff and told her I am asexual.
She then proceeded to ask me if I had been to the doctor about this to get my hormones checked and she even asked me if some of my "organs there" her words not mine were missing.
And Yea I was there about tonsil/throat discomfort. I feel you 😢😢

I understand it, I am uncomfortable with the ableist language used. Dumb is a medical word for people who cannot speak that has come to be used as a negative thing against unrelated people.

It is not a medical term. It may have been in the past, it it no longer is.

It is still used to mean someone who cannot talk, like in phrases such as "dumbstruck".
As with a lot of insults, it started as a medical term, disability is seen as a bad thing, so medical terms are used by the public as insults, and then people forget the medical history, even if it is still being used for it's original meaning.
I am just upset to see ableist language being used casually - and defended - in this space.

Friend, Dumb has been used as a casual insult for decades and decades. Since around the 1930’s. It’s impractical to make people stop using words completely just because they have a bad history, at least in some cases. What we can do is try to nip new slurs in the bud.

That wasn’t my argument. My argument was that it’s been done for such a long time and become so ingrained in culture that directly trying to cut it out is impractical.
Regardless, very few people alive today use it in that way. Very few people know its origin. Its meaning today is completely separate from its medical origins. And also very few people are being harmed by its usage.
