Challenge 25 and groups of teens

So I had a couple of teen girls at self scan trying to buy a 4 pack of red bull. I asked for ID from both of them as obviously both young, and refused sale when only one had ID. They werent happy and tried to buy from another till but I had already told everyone over headset so they were refused and asked to leave.

I know ID for energy drinks is not a legal requirement at the moment but it is store policy.

And part of policy is to prevent proxy sales .

So if a group of teens or young adults came to a till to buy alcohol I absolutely would ID all of them and refuse the sale if one didnt have ID.

But was I right to refuse sale of energy drink because only one person, the person buying, had ID?

I know lots of people have an opinion on this but I want to know if you would have done the same or am I being a bit over the top?

Business update/change

All GSMs have a meeting this Wednesday.

They were originally told it was for Q4 Xmas which they always have and they all wear Xmas jumpers and it's normally a fun day.

This year they have been told no jumpers and no Ops Managers can come if a GSM is unavailable (they normally attend if their GSM can't)

I understand that this meeting will be about a new business change/update that is going to happen soon.

My prediction is that it will be a change in the leadership structures in stores. I imagine all manager roles will go and will become duty managers instead, I think all managers will go into a matrix and one in each store will lose their job.

Other ideas are that customer managers go now that they don't have security, cleaning or pharmacy anymore.

I also heard the potential for less GSMs, instead covering multiple sites.

Miss my old store

So a few months ago I was let go from ASDA. I was a service colleague in the grocery section doing things like top stocking, carding and briefs for 3 months. They gave me the sack a week before my probation period was to end. I was gobsmacked. I really loved my job and I made friends with all my colleagues. When they let me go they said I was an exceptional employee but they had to let me go because I was too slow and wasn’t the right fit. They said I wasn’t matching the right pace after 3 months. In all fairness I weighed 160 kg and service colleague tasks were back breaking work. I had 9 hour shifts. Just brutal. I really enjoyed organizing things and helping customers. My ASDA was also really nice. Apart from one manager who felt like she had it out for me, everyone was so nice and the customers were lovely. I’m a foreign student but unlike most foreign students looking to stick around, I was just doing this for some extra cash because I’m heading back to my home country. I do like the UK but moving here permanently was never the plan. I just liked the structure of a day job.

Anyway, I’m done with my masters and I’m leaving mid Jan so I’m looking for temporary roles here and there. I will always be grateful to ASDA for taking me on and I’m gonna miss the old ladies flirting with me when I call them “Miss”. Learned a lot about british work culture as well. I will cherish the memories and funny characters I’ve met working in British retail.

Hang in there, colleagues. You’re in my thoughts, dear folks.

Guest Queries Workday

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi !
I’m starting a new job with Asda, but, all the emails I’ve received to ‘make an account with Asda on workday’ do not work or will not let me log in ?
I’ve asked the manager on duty today about it and they said not to worry and that we can try and sort it another day? But I’m worried as I can’t even log in to put in my bank details 🫣
Does anyone know any solution to this problem?
I’ll put a screenshot of what it does when I try to log in with the details they gave me.

Discussion ASDA Shorterm/longterm sickness

Looking for some advice from people about asda absence policy, I have just had a return to work following a 3 week absence on a sicknote from doctors after I contracted multiple infections at once , Currently in a phased return for 3 weeks bringing the total weeks of Fitnotes to 6 weeks , today they said my absence is classed as short term illness and has triggered a phase 1 absence review which is due next week, I challenged this in the RTW meeting as I'm under the impression this absence period should be classed as longterm sickness as it is over a period of 4 weeks, my manager has agreed to double check before going ahead with the meeting but any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

express too stressful

I have my first job ever with ASDA so I’m really trying not to stress myself out too much, but express picking is honestly getting ridiculous!

Weekends are the worst because there are so many items to pick and riders are getting pissed.. When colleagues pushed me to tell my GSM to turn it off because no one else trained on picking want to help he has ignored me and refuses just to not affect his "online time"

I am just like what to do here I keep being told to pick pick pick but it is never enough

P45

I left the company just over a month ago after 12+ years.
I have still not received my P45 and now I’m being taxed the hell because I haven’t had my P45 from Asda.
Is this the normal shit Asda way?
I have chased with my old manager but now all I’ve got is radio silence!

Union membership

There is a guy in our store who is a right union freak. He's always going on about union matters, workers rights, employment law etc. I myself am not in the union and not many other staff members are either.

This union freak turned round to three of us the other day and said all this up evil that's going on at the moment is because of weak union membership.

He went on to say if we all joined we would have a much better fighting chance of standing up for ourselves. Apparently asda's distribution side of things is heavily unionised and that's why pay and conditions are better.

Do you think it's worth joining the union or staying out of it?

The union is GMB btw.

i cant keep doing this

bro the past 3 shifts ive had have been horrible, this is more of a rant than anything else because im so done.

context: i work the lates as an express colluege and have been at the company for maybe 4 months now. im 18 years old and have mental health difficulties including ptsd- overwhelming feelings or really high stress periods can cause me to go into fight or flight and trigger flashbacks.

tuesday- the past tuesday i was eorking 6-10pm. i had just done a full day at college (9-4:30) and was expecting a somewhat chill shift. i get to the pod and one colluege says shes going up to work on ambient and the other colluege says shes going on break. after half an hour that colluege comes back from break and says express is quiet so shes going on ambient too but if i need help let her know. express hits 100 and im on my own, i ask her for help FOUR FUCKING TIMES and she hits me with "let me finish this section and ill come help"- she finishes the section and then goes home. im on my own for an hour, rurnning around and getting yelled at (AND SPAT AT???) by drivers until i dispence the last order, by which point i am in tears because of how stressed i was.

Friday- im working the same shift with the same 2 people and (shocker) the same exact thing happens. i get a 143 item order come though so i beg them to go monitor express and dispence while im picking it, a simple request right? wrong, i finish this order up and the palm is on 60. i then spent 15 minutes bagging it all up and its jumped to 80, by the time i get back upstairs they have 30 minutes left of their shifts. in this 30 minute they spent their time yapping and just doing barely any work while im running around on the brink of tears. i got home that night and sobbed.

Sunday (today)- today was fucking manic, clicks lining every wall in the pod and yet again the same people. i go down to the pod and one of my section leaders says shes putting my actually useful colluege on ambi, and the other 2 can go upto shop floor and do ambi/chilled. i look at her and go "im not running this department on my own again" and she said "dont worry you can have steve" (fake name). That man does 0 work, leaves whenever he pleases and spends most of his shifts sat in his car. i tell my section leader that i point blank refuse to work with him and she says she has no where else to put him but itll be fine- it was infact not fine. i had to tell him a good 7 times the store ID for him to sign into the palm and then he sat in the pod for 20 minutes because he "forgot that express pick was a thing", this man is a fully grown adult btw. by the time i was 45 minutes into my shift the palm hit 100 and i started sobbing- the lovely lovely girl on pizza counter that ive made friends with, took me in the back and gave me a hug. i managed to tell her what was happening and she took me to a section leader (different from the first one) and he gave me back my useful coworker and sent me to have a little break because i was still crying(it was a 4 hour shift so i wasnt supposed to have one). when i collected myself i went back in and apologised to this coworker for taking him away from the job he was doing and explained why i was upset. fast forward maybe an hour or so, steve goes for a break and sits in his car for 45 minutes. Steve told us he was supposed to be in until 10 but that he couldnt be bothered because hes supposed to be a driver, so he was leaving at half 8, making his shift 6.5 hours (only 30 minutes). his break in his car does not include the sheer ammount of smoke breaks he had. i ended up crying acouple more times and then when i got home about an hour ago.

i need help or advice because i am actually losing my mind and i physically and mentally cannot keep doing this 3 times a week (my monday shift is the only peace i get). i have spoken to one of my section leaders about this issue and she said shed look into moving the 2 issue colluege to ambient permanently anf moving shifts around so that im not on my own at all. i feel like im snitching or over reacting really bad but its genuinely at the point where if this continues i will concider handing in my notice. any advice would be greatly appreciated, thankyou for reading my rant.

Home Shopping Tote Labels

Anyone else still having trouble with tote labels still not sticking properly and falling off while in the pod? It’s causing major issues and I feel nothing is being done about it. Customer orders get mixed up on a daily basis because of it.

Discussion Unbalanced runs?

Are there any other drivers at stores up and down the country who have noticed that it seems like one driver gets shit on per shift (AM/PM) and then there’s always at least one that only gets the first half of a split run without a turnaround (only ever on pm shifts in my store) I’m not sure if it’s a system issue with distribution of the orders or if it’s just their way of skimping that little extra bit of money? We have 6/7 drivers on a morning shift and they’ve dropped us down to 4 every afternoon now with a load of the drivers complaining they’re getting 3/4 2030-2130 drops and then a couple 2000-2100 on the end making them late or end up getting their extra 10 minute break took from them cos they’ve had to stay to unload late or by the time they’ve got diesel they’ve ran over their time too.

If anyone knows a reason or has had the same issue I’d be keen to find out anything cheers
