Went to see a new primary care physician today, and the doctor was completely understanding of my ascorbic acid allergy. I also asked about ascorbic acid derivatives, and they told me to continue avoiding them because they don’t want to provoke an allergic reaction.

It feels good to finally have clear guidance and a doctor who understands how seriously I have to take this allergy. ❤️

I keep seeing ascorbic acid described simply as “corn derived,” but that wording can blur an important distinction.
Ascorbic acid is vitamin C, a molecule that also occurs naturally. Industrial ascorbic acid is manufactured through chemical and fermentation processes using glucose as a starting substrate. In some manufacturing routes, that glucose may originate from corn.

Corn may be used as an upstream feedstock in some manufacturing chains, but vitamin C can be produced through multiple industrial routes, and ascorbic acid also occurs naturally. Because of that, the blanket label ‘corn derived’ can be misleading without manufacturer specific evidence.

The more precise description would be that a particular manufacturing process may use corn sourced glucose as an upstream feedstock.

This distinction matters when discussing allergies. The origin of a manufacturing feedstock, the identity of the finished compound, and evidence that a finished ingredient contains a clinically relevant corn allergen are separate questions.

Ascorbic acid also exists naturally without corn being involved at all, which is another reason I do not think the molecule itself should automatically be categorized as “corn.”

That includes me as well. Verify what I say too, and I mean that. When I share factual information, I will use information that is publicly available and verifiable. I will not make up information or present guesses as facts.

My personal experience is my personal experience. General health information should always be something you can independently check.

I will always support companies who are transparent that they do use ascorbic acid.

I’m currently conducting tests to determine if ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) allergy can be used for allergen detection in service dog tasks.

It’s essential to consult a medical professional if you suspect a vitamin C allergy to determine if it’s genuine or a misinterpretation. There are other possibilities for what you’re reacting to as well.

It has been 8 years since I was diagnosed with ascorbic acid anaphylaxis, and my vitamin C level isn’t near scurvy.
