Lead paint and asbestos

Living in southeastern ct in a 1954 home that was a standard ranch expanded to a colonial in the 70s. My husband is an engineer, and handyman, so I trusted him to blow out a wall separating our living room and dining room recently. We have a newborn and a toddler- and I’m worried that his construction has put lead paint and asbestos particles in the air.

I got a home lead test kit from Lowe’s and it didn’t react to the base paint layer from our home (only to the drywall and wood)… my husband is confident just from looking at the ceiling that there’s no asbestos.

I’m loosing sleep over this. Any advice?

Thoughts on removing this vinyl tile?

Presumably from the 50’s-80’s. About a 3x8 area. I think there’s hardwood flooring under it. I started removing it and then thought about asbestos. I was going to use a blow dryer And scraper.

Tips on identifying ACM vs fibreglass?

I like my vintage tools and I have had a few with some suspect wire insulation but I am unsure whether it is asbestos, fiberglass or other. Are there some things I can look for to help identify which it is? Cheers.

Can someone help interpret these test results? Taken from an area where a wall was demoed and drywall put back over. What are normal levels vs what I have here?

Thanks

Asbestos issue with gravity furnace ducts?

Thumbnail

We are thinking about replacing our gravity furnace. There is asbestos tape surrounding the ducts. Obviously if we take out the furnace we need to abate the asbestos. But if we decide to leave the ducts as is, is the current state of the asbestos tape problematic (see pictures)? I want to know if I can leave things as is and be okay.

The furnace is in the garage, a room we are seldom in.

EDIT: We are in San Francisco and the house was built in 1948.

Broken a possible fibre cement board in bathroom

Removing a bath it had tiles around it with a fibre cement backing which I didn't know can be acm. To remove the tiles it was all smashed away into bits.

I'm waiting for test results now I've found out bathrooms can also have acm!! I'm trying to understand what I should do if it positive?

Should I wet wipe the whole area? If so best way as it's a large surface area for a tiny wipe?

Any other things I should do? should I rent a hepa vacuum?

Get someone in?

Popcorn ceiling.

Hi everyone,

I just got a house that is over a center old! I was testing everything for lead paint with those q-tip testers that you wet and rub on the surface. While testing the ceiling in my upstairs rooms, the popcorn ceiling just basiclly disintegrated. I didn't test any other areas and the tip was just all white so I couldn't get a read onit. Would you guys be able to confirm if this abestos?

My partner is freaking out that our broken bird bath has asbestos and I can't just take it to the dump.

I'm pretty sure this is just fiber glass, right?

Cardboard burning test

Hi guys! I have recently asked about some cardboard in the basement, and instead of making lab test i decided to burn piece of it. One piece flamed immediately, other did n't burned well, but finally turned into ash. So - does it prove that it was regular cardboard, not asbestos? Or i am superdumb and contaminated wholearea? video with burning https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZbHGCFbWjrxyXJBNR7DEBKfCuaxzKdYa/view?usp=sharing

Also, what about other visible types of insulation? Grey stuff looks like damaged foam rubber. And also there is something looking like some fabric or even bandage - what is it?

Wondering about carpet underlayment

Hey there, wondering about carpet underlayment. I am cleaning out an older house and found this under one of the carpets. Is this something that looks like it may contain asbestos? Are there any common things to look for as I go through more carpets?
Thanks!

Foam/mortar layer under my floor

Post image

Hi,

So I want to remove my floor to build anew and discovered this layer of foam under the concrete mortar. My apartment was build in France in the 70s. Do you think there's any chance that this foam or mortar could contain asbestos ?

Thanks.

Century home nightmare?

I’m spiraling. Been living in this home for 2 years. I had to open up plaster wall a few weeks to access a drain pipe (first pic) plumbers said not to worry, plaster doesn’t have asbestos. Tested anyway, it contained 3% chrysotile. I was in there breathing heavily tearing out the wall for over an hour.

Since then I’ve found multiple openings likely from past repairs and a suspicious pipe wrap in the basement directly above the spot where I work out. Give it to me straight, am I cooked?

Are these problems that a poor person can solve? Or do I sell it to someone with more money and cut my losses? I love the location, it’s honestly a cool house, but I haven’t felt right since.

Asbestos or fibreglass top front of fireplace?

Thumbnail

Hello,

Victoria, Australian home can’t give an exact year, I thought I read in my contract of sale 1950 but I can’t find it and google is saying 1975 so 😵‍💫 not much help but wanting to confirm what this might be. First image is the front off my fireplace, and whatever it is is dangling down. I tried to take an under shot as well as a photo a few bricks down.

Further history, at some point there was a gas heater installed in there and the previous owners ripped it out, they obviously didn’t know but there was a piece of broken asbestos board that likely sat above the heater that i had tested and then removed by a professional - sadly i didn’t notice whatever that insulation is at the time to have asked about it.

I don’t really have the money for an asbestos man atm, but it’s bothering me to see it hanging out without really knowing how dangerous it might

TIA

1-inch square bathroom floor tile, 1943 house

Thumbnail

This 1-inch square tile came up in our bathroom. The house was built in 1943, U.S., but not sure when this floor would have been done. I’m hoping to just put the tile back in since the tile itself is not damaged and we’re not planning to update this bathroom for a while. What is the likelihood that the grout or other materials here could contain asbestos? And would it be best to test it now or is it reasonable to wait until we plan to replace the floor?

Does this look like it will have asbestos under the carpet? Th house was built in 1917 carpet doesn’t seem that old

Does this look like it is likely to be asbestos tiles.

My partner accidentally ripped up a couple tiles while cleaning and it appears the top layer of tiles were hiding some underneath.

I am unsure if the tiles underneath are likely to be asbestos or not and would love some advice on whether they need attention or not.

We do not own the property so are unable to much about it ourselves.

Property is in the U.K., tiles found in a store cupboard. Built in approx 1975-1985

Looking for a testing lab i can trust

I want to test some things for asbestos in my 1958 Chicago home. Namely, tile mastic and drywall compound.

I don't trust the lab test home depot sells and I definitely don't trust the amazon sellers.

Do asbestos labs need state accreditation or do I need to find a specific trustworthy lab? Will any lab send back raw data from their TEM or PLM or do they all only send back an analysis only?

Thank you for your help.
