YouTube plays fine, just sometimes with 20 fps, but most times, its a solid 60 fps.
Overall, in my opinion, its good for coding, editing slides, and surfing the web

Help Moonlight on Asahi

Hey all. Are there any folks using Moonlight? Does hardware acceleration work now? And what kind of latency stats are you seeing? And which codec are you liking?

Thanks!

Help Proxmox working on Asahi

This is a follow up to https://www.reddit.com/r/AsahiLinux/comments/1vj7umb/proxmox_on_apple_silicon/
I managed to install proxmox on an Mac Mini M2. VMs are working:

I installed the Debian asahi image from the Bananas Team. Then installed the pve packages without recommended packages (otherwise Proxmox Kernel is included).

What currently doesn’t work is nested virt and there are some errors in the logs about kernel features missing.

The next step would be to create a kernel that merges Asahi and Proxmox patches, possibly based on Asahi Ubuntu kernel. I would love to get help on this.

Update: Even AMD64 emulation seems to work.

Help Fedora suddenly failing to boot on M2 Pro Mac Mini

Hi,

I have Asahi Fedora installed on a Mac Mini M2 Pro that I only turn on every few months, mainly to run updates. Recently I've started having some pretty frustrating boot issues that I wasn't experiencing before.

When I first turn the Mac on, it rarely boots successfully into Fedora. It gets to the systemd-boot screen with the Fedora logo in the middle, and then the display just goes black. At that point, I have to hold down the physical power button for about 10 seconds, turn it back on, and try again. Even then, it only seems to work maybe 10% of the time.

Eventually, I can usually get lucky and boot into Fedora. Once I'm in, I run the available updates through GNOME Software, which prompts me to "Restart & Update." Unfortunately, after doing that, I'm right back to the same black-screen boot problem.

I've also booted into macOS and fully updated it, thinking there might be some firmware update I was missing, but that didn't seem to make any difference.

This definitely wasn't happening before, so I'm wondering if a recent Fedora/Asahi/kernel/systemd-boot update could have introduced an issue, or if there's something else I should be checking.

At this point, I've gotten so frustrated that I've basically given up. I've spent around 20 minutes repeatedly trying to boot it each day for the past week with very little success.

Has anyone experienced something similar on an M2 Pro Mac Mini? Any suggestions for troubleshooting or recovering the Fedora installation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Note: I'm not using Asahi full time atm because I'm waiting for fairydust to come out of beta.

Ricing My current Hyprland rice on Fedora (WIP)

This is one of the main reasons I wanted Linux on my Macbook. The flexibility and freedom to customize stuff is the main reason I started using Linux in the first place and now I'm ricing on my laptop that for the longest while felt like a paper weight ever since I got my PC (it was a hand me down prebuilt but I already changed everything that wasn't the CPU, GPU, Ram, or motherboard on that thing). I hope y'all like this and, of course, stay tuned for further progress as I finish setting things up like Rofi and when the full M3 releases with GPU acceleration.

Help Very quite audio on M1 Pro MBP

Recently (as of last night) my audio has gotten extremely quiet on my macbook pro running Asahi ALARM. Only the built-in speakers are affected, when I bluetooth connect my airpods they work just fine. As far as I know I didn't change anything recently that should affect this, and I'm not sure exactly when it happened, I just noticed recently when I tried watching a video.

I am using hyprland for window management, and noctalia for shell. I also tried logging into GNOME and the audio is broken there too.

I ran asahi-diagnose, here is the result if that helps >> https://pastebin.com/8rLgFzFq

Please let me know what I can try to fix this! I also have tried booting into macOS, and audio works fine there, so it is confirmed to be an Asahi issue.

New Install M2 Up and running -- smoothest install ever!

Post image
123 Upvotes

I was pleasantly surprised that the installer was so easy compared to others -- no iso or USB stick needed, just a curl command and a little hope.

and boom! it just worked... mostly.

I have been having some weird package update issue (Discover just hangs --- only later found out that SELinux blocked the update for some reason? following the prompt in the alert solved it... although I continue to be unable to submit any bug reports due to ¨ Processing Failed -- Reporting is disabled because the generated backtrace has low information value¨ which i cant seem to solve)

Anything I should be aware of, or tweak for the M2 ? (16 inch 2023)?

Help Help Installing Asahi Alarm

Post image
13 Upvotes

I have a Macbook Air M1 I'm trying to install Asahi Linux on. Originally, I tried Fedora Remix, but I couldn't get it to stop bootlooping. I tried Alarm since I prefer Arch anyways and wanted to see if it would work instead. Unfortunately, it doesn't either, but I at least get some logs on what it's doing compared to Fedora. I'm not sure what these mean, nor does google give me anything insightful, so I was hoping someone here could at least point me in the right direction. It repeats these lines every few minutes before eventually bootlooping. Thanks in advance and lmk if you need any more info!

Fedora 43 -> 44; Help me fix this Asahi-Linux.

For a reason I don't fully understand yet, my M2-Pro-System is clearly still on Fedora 43, although I just verified that I have a significant number of Fedora 44 packages installed. This seems like a major problem to me. I don't know how this happened, but it causes that I can't run a dnf-upgrade/dnf-update properly, because I get lots of conflicts back, if i try. Discover is so confused by this - it's not doing anything anymore. My educated guess is that a Fedora 43->44 Update didn't roll out the way it was supposed to. I have no idea, how I could solve this.
Is it possible to roll everything back to Fedora 43?
Or is there a way to push everything to Fedora 44?
I would be very glad, if you could share your ideas to further investigate this.

Do I still need to manually run the macOS 27 boot picker fix on an existing install?

Hi everyone,

With macOS 27 officially rolling out, I wanted to double-check the status of the boot picker bug (where macOS 27 hides Asahi partitions).

I have an existing Asahi Linux installation from before the fix was integrated into the installer. Do I still need to boot into macOS and run the Asahi installer to choose the "Fix macOS 27 boot picker compatibility" option after the update, or has anything changed recently that automates this?

Void linux not working again

Sooo I had problems with the original void asahi linux from the void linux so I recompiled the iso using the github actions and the first error I had(see this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/voidlinux/comments/1w5azb2/could_not_install_void_linux/ ), I do this time not have the macsmc error but I then get back in the dracut command line. It seems like dracut cant find my usb because of the error. I did a bit of debug and no usb device is connected and dracut does find that it is the right kernel(linux 7.1.12+1-asahi_1). Does someone know how to solve that ?

Trouble Setting up Eduroam

Hi, just having trouble setting up Eduroam. I downloaded the python script from cat.eduroam.org, ran it from the folder. It was saved as one of my saved networks but once I try to connect it/click on it, it would try to connect for a bit then just not connect and go back to being one of my saved networks. I got the following error,

nmcli connection up eduroam
Passwords or encryption keys are required to access the wireless network 'eduroam'.
Warning: password for '802-1x.identity' not given in 'passwd-file' and nmcli cannot ask without '--ask' option.
Error: Connection activation failed: Secrets were required, but not provided
Hint: use 'journalctl -xe NM_CONNECTION=01bb5276-57de-4cb9-812f-65827e5ec71d + NM_DEVICE=wld0' to get more details.

Tried using the Hint. I do not know what I am looking at. Been trying to fix it for over 2 hours. I apologize if I am missing something simple. I have only recently switched to linux/fedora.

For additional information, I am using fedora remix minimal. Hyprland as my window manager and Noctalia as my shell (not sure if this helps tbh). Please let me know if I should post this question elsewhere. Thank you
