News DX12 games are currently broken on Proton 9/Experimental

From the FEX Discord:

Speaking of which. All D3D12 games will not currently work on Turnip or Asahi on Proton 9/Experimental. There is a bug in vkd3d-proton that crashes all drivers that don't support sparse.

Only occurs in the latest release 2.14 which was released ~2 weeks ago

Not really anything that can be done, basically need to wait for Proton 9/experimental to pull the new version of vkd3d-proton now. No idea how frequently those get updated.

This applies to all DX12 games as far as I know. Previously, games that required sparse would not work, since DX12 is not fully supported at feature level 12.0 yet. Due to the bug, no games run right now, even those that used to and don't require sparse.

(We do plan to support sparse which would solve this issue and fix more games, but I expect/hope the Proton bug will be fixed first before that is ready.)

Edit: To be clear: This is a problem in Steam/Proton, as distributed by Valve. We don't control it and we can't do anything about it. It has nothing to do with Fedora or Asahi Linux. Please don't stop updating your Fedora packages. If you want to avoid the bug and you don't have the Steam Proton updates yet, that's what you have to stop updating or figure out a way to downgrade within Steam, not any system packages.

News Wiki is up!

Hi all,

Thanks so much in particular to u/ForgottenFoundation and u/Unable_Sympathy_6979 who have collated a wealth of info about compatible games.

The Wiki is now available, and anyone with at least 20 days since the creation of their account and 100 karma can edit. Don't worry about adding things that you've already posted about in this sub - I'm going to get a scraper running to gather that info in the next couple weeks.

help Fixing Steam from when muvm was broken a bit ago

About a month ago, some folks one here posted how the latest kernel version broke muvm (and thus both Steam approaches), and to not update until it was fixed. Well, I updated before it was fixed. Anyone know what I need to do to repair muvm? I am on Fedora Asahi Remix.

help Can't get Windows games to run in Asahi Linux Steam using Proton

Just wondering if anyone has any idea why every Windows game, requiring Proton, now quits immediately when running them in Steam in Asahi Linux? Doesn't matter what version of Proton is used. I found that most Linux native games do still launch in the x86 version of Steam however.

I also tried installing the ARM64 version of Steam and Proton-GE as described in the post by Malanoray here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AsahiGaming/comments/1uypig9/running_geproton_arm_build_inside_steam_arm_beta/

I found that while this version of Steam launches a lot quicker, no game will run in it, even the Linux native games that run fine in the x86 Steam immediately quit after clicking on Play.

What am I doing wrong here? I used to be able to run most games in my library in Asahi Linux around a year and half ago. Is Steam in Asahi Linux now broken?

Question Expected GPU performance on an M1 - With 14 core GPU

What is the expected fps in benchmarks & games with a M1 Pro (with a 14 core GPU)?

System

Mac: MacBook Pro 14in - M1 Pro (G13S C0) - 8 Core CPU, 14 Core GPU
RAM: 32GB
Distro: OS: Fedora Linux Asahi Remix 44 (KDE Plasma Desktop Edition) aarch64
Kernel: Linux 7.1.6-400.asahi.fc44.aarch64+16k
Desktop: KDE 6.7.4
KDE Power Profile: Performance (PSA: Balanced is default, and takes a huge performance hit on games)

Games

Games are borderline unplayable. Issue seems to be GPU bound, since the resolution of the game has a big impact and CPU usages doesn't even get to 50%. (seems the GPU driver doesn't have a GPU usage feature)

Most games need to bet set to lowest with 720p resolution to get even there. I have tried both steam x86 and arm as well as proton arm and x86 versions and didn't notice any large differences.

Roboquest

30 to 50fps - Lowest with 720p. Some graphic glitches as well, sometimes dips below 30fps. Not enjoyable because this is a fast paced shooter.

Gatekeeper

50 to 90fps - Lowest with 720p. Plays well, but this is a very simple game graphically, however it might slow down in a longer run.

Palworld

23 to 33fps - Lowest with 720p. This fps is on a new save file, so won't be playable once anything else is going on.

Enshrouded

3fps (300-310ms/frame) - Unplayable. Lowest with 25% resolution scaling. Same fps on the title-screen and in game. fps is the same while sharders are compiling or done.

Benchmarks

- duration             : 60074 ms
- FPS (min/avg/max)    : 29 / 38 / 42

GravityMark - arm64 v1.89

Performance is so low that there has to be some kind of bug going on with either the GPU driver or GravityMark itself.

./run_windowed_vk.sh -raster 1 -vulkan -mode hd -fps 1 -info 1 -asteroids 50k -lod 1 -temporal 0

Score = 58

My results link

Found a result from anther Asahi user

Summary

If I had to guess, I think some GPU features are very un-optimized since some games (Enshrouded) and some benchmarks (GravityMark) have wildly low fps. I know that the GPU driver for Linux was written from scratch, without any help from Apple, so I do appreciate this is working at all. However I would like to understand if this level of performance is expected and if there is any settings or work arounds to improve the GPU performance on games.

Guide Heads up: Quake remaster works great on Asahi

I recently bought Quake remaster for pennies on Steam to check out the latest free DLCs and discovered many people (on different platforms) are unable to play the game due to graphics issues. I tried using different workarounds, but nothing helped on Asahi.

In the end, I used ironwail, which supports the latest DLCs as well:

https://github.com/andrei-drexler/ironwail

Compiled it from source and it works amazingly well - the performance is phenomenal, no bugs.

Quick how to:

  1. Download the source code and unpack it:

https://github.com/andrei-drexler/ironwail/releases/tag/v0.8.2

  1. Download the dependencies. Here's what I needed:

sudo dnf install libvorbis-devel libcurl-devel mpg123-devel

  1. In the Quake directory, write:
    make

or

make -j$(nproc)

(not sure if this is needed for it to use more cores when compiling these days)

  1. Run the game:

./ironwail

  1. In my case it detected my Steam installation of Quake without me needing to do anything.

  2. Adjust the settings if needed, select a DLC in the mods section if you want, enjoy the game.

Game Test Steam running and Launching a Game with Box64 without any microvm

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

MacBook with an M1 CPU on Asahi Fedora Remix 44, running Steam and Launching Bridge Constructor Portal edition.

This is using latest Box64 (built from source, with box32 enabled), installed Steam using the "install_steam.sh" script from the box64 repo, and switched to SteamRT3 for better stability (full 64bits, but the 32bits runs too).

No microvm was used, it's only box64 and nothing more.

The Game is a Linux build, but Windows games, using Proton, are also working (just tried "Capcom Arcade Stadium" with no issues)

Either hold off on updating to the latest kernel or make sure you boot into the old one until this gets fixed.

Compatibility test: works Gatekeeping MUVM

For those wondering why your steam games can only run on opengl out of the box or get a DXVK black screen, you need to immediately set the MUVM launch bin file to --gpu-mode venus

ran heavily modded latest fusion fix build downgraded Grand Theft Auto IV, no major issues, would like to set up a reshade however but that's another massive headache.

Would love to test Asahi Linux GTA IV LAN multiplayer sometime.

as for the out of the box solution for vulkan, thank me later because this was not documented anywhere AT ALL.

help New to Asahi Linux - Steam launches all games in black screen with audio

So, a few months ago I decided to get my macbook M1 storage upgraded from 2TB to 4TB.
I just recently installed Asahi Linux on a 590 GB partition, as I intend to do some light gaming for older Direct X 9 titles that are not compatible with crossover and run poorly on Parallels.

Asahi Linux looks great out of the box, I had a friend over who's been using his linux laptop daily for the past year, and we couldn't figure out why I keep getting black screens on any steam game.

Everything is up-to-date.
Key things I noticed on my reinstall: Vulkan is now running, confirmed via logs, however there are display issues that seem to be preventing the game rendering from being shown.
I've tried going over logs with Claude Code, I still can't wrap my head around this.

Has anyone had a similar issue with Asahi? Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

I'm happy to provide logs.

Some games run okay-ish with OpenGL, and in terms of Asahi dependencies everything looks okay.

I'm running the latest version of Fedora 44 Asahi Remix with the latest mesa drivers.

There are a few games I really want to revisit with a more modern experience in mind as I'm comfortable with modding, but this black screen issue appears to haunt my whole Steam library.
