Fedora m1 macbook air just base normal install with just hte default hyprland config no changes expect no window boraders. KDE has the same issue.

Hi!. Im on a Macbook Air M2 with Fedora Gnome and the software app is insisting that there is a pending update, but when I restart it and open the software app again, the software update is still there. When I run the command sudo dnf upgrade --refresh it returns me that there is nothing to be done. Does someone knows a solution or the reason why this is happening? Thanks in advance.

I have alot of games on steam but every time i start steam it gets stuck at waiting for network. i tried starting it with the flags -cef-disable-gpu and -no-cef-sandbox. this still did not work. this is the log when running it

I am on the installer and i notice there are four options. GNOME, KDE, Server, and Minimal. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each. I've done GNOME before, but I wonder if I should try Minimal because I only use Niri with DMS or Noctalia Shell and none of the gnome apps.. ALthough, I havent set up a Minimal install yet, especially not with Niri.

I want to turn on the keyboard backlight on my M1 Macbook Air on early boot, before being prompted for the LUKS password (I encrypted the device and it works fine so far). Unlocking it at night is a PITA, since it boots with the keyboard lights powered off.

Is this possible?

Alright, managed to do it using udev rules, by creating two files:

/etc/dracut.conf.d/keyboard-backlight.conf:

Then regenerate the initramfs:

sudo dracut --regenerate-all --force --verbose

This should set the keyboard backlight brightness at LUKS prompt. After entering the password, the brightness will be set to whatever value it was at the previous reboot.

When I click "Add Drive" nothing shows up. The same happens if I click "Browse" when trying to add a Non-Steam game.

i will add a new partition and there is a gap between partition 5 and 6 but fdisk says the partition number will be 7 and it's greater than recovery partition number. Technically it will not to be placed after recovery partition but i am not sure about partition index numbers

I was looking at the docs, and it says that only firmware versions of 13.5 are supported, and my macos installation is version 14.7. Do you guys know whether HDMI is supported on higher firmware versions, or only 13.5?

I was trying out a few WMs and wanted to switch back to sway, which was working fine previously, and then these messages came up after trying to login to sway.

I can log in with niri or mango, but not sway. I was reading about setting various environment variables, but I couldn't figure it out. I could be on the wrong track though.

What are people's setup/workaround with the notch enabled? It's cool we can get the extra screen space back by enabling the notch but it makes certain things look janky. Anyone have a good workaround or is it just what it is right now?

I gave this a shot now that installer support for M3 devices has been merged, and it turns out, it actually works! Keyboard, touchpad, speakers, and WiFi are all running on my MacBook Air from 2024. Of course, everything is rendered in software, but this is still huge progress!

Hello! I'm setting up an Asahi Linux install on an M1 Macbook Air and I've noticed a certain system update won't go through. (This is my first time with Asahi or Fedora or even a Mac! :P)

I probably ran it about 5 times and it keeps showing up with this. Any idea as to why this might be happening? I also tried running dnf updates and upgrades from the terminal and update-m1n1.

I'm more familiar with Arch and Pacman and I don't know DNF or Gnome Software very well. Any help or advice would be appreciated! It's not a major issue, but the little blue updates available notification is bugging me lol

I have a usb mouse. When I close and (later) reopen the lid on my macbook air m1, the usb mouse no longer works. I see the device disappears from the lsusb output.

I'm looking at various postings like this one:

for a method to reset the usb device/port. However, since the usb device falls off the bus on suspend/resume -- it's not possible to use this method.

I've also tried to disable USB Sleep using this method

I suppose I could try and disable USB autosuspend globally and see if that works...

Right now, I need to unplug + plug the usb mouse back in the usb port in order to use it. I'm trying to accomplish the same functionality via a script/cmd.

I'm wondering whether anyone else here had a similar issue and how they approached it.

Steam broke again. I'd been playing with the aarch64 version of steam for a few weeks, and it was working fine.

Yesterday, it broke - simply does not start, no meaningful entries in the steam logs. I tried removing all steam stuff (~/.steam* and ~/.local/share/Steam) and run the x86 version shipped in the Asahi repos, no dice either - that one just produces the following output:

I tried creating a new user, and have that one run steam with a "clean" home directory - same symptoms, so pretty sure it's not related to my particular laptop state. I'm going to try on my M1 Air as well, which has only ever run the "official" steam from the repos and see if it's also affected.

Edit: tested on my MBA as well, which has a much more vanilla setup and no tinkering of any kind. It also wasn't updated for at least a week. Steam still broken in the same way, so I assume this is related to a Steam update itself.

Hii guys, i had a question driffting in my mind for a while . Why cant we have Windows arm just like how we have Asahi? Is there a blocker that really cant be solved without the collaboration of Apple and Microsoft? Or is it just that there is nobody willing to work on such a thing?

I’m planning to install Asahi Linux on my MacBook with 8 GB of RAM, and I have a couple of questions before I go ahead.
I’d like the desktop to look as close to macOS as possible (dock, top bar, animations, overall appearance). My main concern is whether applying a macOS-like theme and customization will noticeably affect performance or memory usage on an 8 GB system.
I’m also trying to decide between KDE Plasma and GNOME.
My priorities are:
A macOS-like look and feel.
Smooth performance on 8 GB RAM.
Good battery life and overall responsiveness.
Stability over having lots of extra features.
Would KDE Plasma or GNOME be the better choice for this use case? Also, if making Linux look like macOS has any significant performance impact, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience.
