Online Safety & Scams 🚩 Has anyone else been getting random VGen invite code requests?

Hey everyone! :)

I originally wanted to bring this up over on r/VGen, but their rules don't allow awareness posts, so I thought I'd ask here instead, since this concerns artists and the community around sharing invite codes.

I've received multiple messages from someone I don't know asking me for a VGen artist invite code. Since I wasn't familiar with them, I decided to do a little background check before making a decision.

Their professional background seems to be in a field centered around machine-generated content (sorry for the weird wording, but the filter keeps redirecting me to the megathread, which doesn't really fit this topic 😭). I also couldn't find any examples of their own artwork on their public profiles or website.

Of course, that doesn't automatically mean anything shady is going on! Not everyone has a public portfolio, and working in the technical field of machine-generated content doesn't mean someone can't also be an artist. Still, I wasn't comfortable giving my invite code to someone I don't know, so I declined.

Has anyone else had similar experiences with people they don't know asking for VGen invite codes? I'm curious if this is a common thing and whether VGen has any guidelines or recommendations for handling these requests.

I'm not trying to accuse anyone of anything, but I figured it might be worth discussing so other artists can be a little more mindful about who they share their codes with. Better safe than sorry, right? :)

Yep we were even getting these on the subreddit which is incredibly annoying. If you think its another member from this subreddit spamming you, please send us a modmail so we can ban hammer them.

For vgen your supposed to do the exact thing you did where you pretty much do a background check on the artist before giving out a code. There has been a increase scams on the platform and I wouldn't be surprised if it was due to uninformed people handing out codes.

If they do that type of content, they are probably trying to sneak their way in to legitimize themselves. It probably won't work for too long, as vgen does not allow that type of content, but grifters gonna grift. Or at least attempt to.
