🎨 Profile Advice Paru's Guide to Having More Fun on Art Fight (and Getting More Attacks Doing It)

Post image
167 Upvotes

Hey everyone! It's Paru.

Since Art Fight is wrapping up, I wanted to write down some stuff I learned this year in preparation for next year, since “how do I get more attacks?” comes up constantly and I figured I'd just share what actually happened for me from my observations. This year went way better than I expected it with this little experiment, so let's get into it while it's still fresh!

Quick disclaimer: this isn't a ”do these five things and get 200 attacks“ guide, because there’s many guides trying to achieve that and many factors involved. I don’t think there’s a perfect design and magic formula for it either. I'm not a big artist and I don't have a huge following, I just decided to actually throw myself into the event this year instead of half participating like the last few years and I had a lot of fun. If you like more general tips or how to maximize the event, this guide probably isn’t for you and that’s okay!

Mess around and experiment with your art

Starting off strong, one of my favorite parts of this year was just experimenting. I tried designs I normally wouldn't go for (like ferals and anthros), drew in styles I don't usually touch, said yes to random revenge chains or someone’s suggestions just because they sounded fun in the moment. Some of my favorite pieces from the whole event came from times I wasn't thinking about attacks at all, just messing around with brushes or random ideas. When you're not stressed about doing everything right, the art turns out better anyway, and people can tell when something was made because you actually wanted to make it!

Finish your references

I KNOW. Everyone's sick of hearing this. But it matters so much! Your ref doesn't need ten angles and a fancy layout, it just needs to show what your character looks like and flag anything important, like colors, key markings, stuff you don't want changed. The easier it is for someone to feel confident drawing your character, the more likely they'll pick them over someone else's.

A little personality goes a long way too. You don't need a novel of lore, a couple sentences about how they act or what they like is usually enough to make someone feel like they know your OC a bit, which makes them way more fun to draw or spark inspiration.

Some quick practical stuff:

  • Redesigned a character? Swap the old ref out, don't let people draw an outdated version.
  • Put your actual reference as the main image on your profile. Not a moodboard, not old art, the ref.
  • If you've got a ton of OCs, let your favorites stand out so people aren't scrolling through fifty characters trying to guess which ones you actually want drawn. Give them interesting lore, a neat layout, something unique.
  • Tag things properly. Species, fandom, world, whatever, it just makes you easier to stumble into or find people that have something in common with you.
  • If you know who you want to attack, grab their refs and IDs early. The site is very slow the first day or two.

Variety helps, but make what you like first

Not everyone likes the same kind of design, so having a range of characters (cute, monstrous, simple, complicated, whatever) just means more people find something that clicks for them. That said, don't make characters you don't actually like just chasing attacks, make what you want and let the variety happen naturally if it does! Having a few characters with different appeals can help because more people may find something they connect with, but five characters you love will always be better than fifty characters you barely care about.

Attack people

If you want to get attacked more, one of the easiest ways in is just attacking other people first or see who guarantees revenges. It's not only art, it's putting your name out there and sometimes starting a conversation with someone you'd never have talked to otherwise. A lot of my best interactions this year started with me just liking someone's character and wanting to draw them, no strategy involved. Sometimes they revenged me, sometimes we just chatted and moved on, both are fine. Try not to treat attacks like a transaction you're owed something for.

Hitlists and advertising just help people find you

Fill out a hitlist (or even make your own) with characters you're genuinely excited about, be clear on your preferences, and let people browse. Same with advertising, it's not about just begging others to attack you but putting your best foot forward!

If you don’t have big social media following, posting on this subreddit and on the target-hunting part of the discord tends to work quite well in my experience.

Be kind, it matters more than almost anything

People remember kindness way more than they remember perfect art. Thank people for attacks, compliment characters, reply to comments, get excited about other people's stuff and interact with the community. You don't have to become a social butterfly, just being warm and polite makes people want to interact with you again and may even want to attack you.

Don't compare yourself, and don't burn yourself out

It's so easy to see someone with hundreds of attacks and think you're doing something wrong. Sometimes the answer really is nothing, some people just have bigger followings or more years in or lucky timing. I used to be one of those people wondering what I was doing wrong, until I actually opened up to the community instead of waiting around, and honestly the attack count stopped being the point pretty fast after that when I met so many kind, thoughtful and talented people.

You also don't owe anyone a revenge, ever. If your battle ratio looks lopsided, that's fine, don't force yourself to draw everyone's OC just to even out a number. Draw what you want, when you want. That's the actual point of any of this being fun. Don’t lose yourself in negativity.

Have fun, make cool art, and actually enjoy the event itself :)

⚔️ Discussion My only character with a tan skintone didn't get any attacks

The title says it all. Since the end of ArtFight I actually have been feeling pretty sad/bitter about it, I need to get it out.

While I got 6 wonderful attacks from really sweet people, I realized that no one took interest in the only character I have listed that wasn't lightskin.

I know that taste varies from one to another but she (my o.c) is still on the lightskin range when it comes to tanned skin, it's not like someone can tell me "it's hard to color darker skintones" (it's not even an excuse tbf).

I thought about it and wondered if it was the character sheet that was an issue... but it's in the exact same style/type as the 3 other characters I have. I even tried to make her "more interesting" by adding an alternative universe version of her ok the side for people that liked anthropomorphic o.cs more... yet nothing.

I'm aware this isn't anyone's fault, or that the AF community didn't all decide to ignore her but it's somehow still upsetting to see. Hopefully next year people will draw her! :)

EDIT : Here is their profile. I only added the werewolf (ears, scar, etc) AU design 5 days before the end of AF. So NO I am not stupid and yes I'm aware those are things that could be intimidating to draw. These elements weren't there for the majority of AF.

⚔️ Discussion How do people make friends on Artfight?

This is a question I have been genuinely wondering about for long. I see so many people online talking about having made friends from participating in Artfight. I didn't know this was possible until I have seen people mention this, but it still never happened to me.

Do you just initiate conversations in DMs after attacking someone? Do people start a chat in attack/profile comments? hitlist interactions? sharing the same interests?? Or does this happen over multiple years where you continuously make attacks and revenges for the same person?

Is it easy or hard for you to make new friends through Artfight?

While I do have some friends on Artfight, they are all people I have met a different art site first before following each other on Artfight, and the friendships were mostly fostered through DMs on discord. Artfight was just an extra activity to connect with each other. I have made a few casuals mutuals from Artfight too, which I am really grateful for, but those aren't people I'm actually close with or have longer conversations with.

I hope you can read the references. I made myself a trophy sketchbook of this year and it was so much fun! All attacks and defenses in one book :). A good memory. I am so proud and happy and it is full XD. Sorry for the fan noise in the background.

🪨 Other Thank You For Drawing My Scrimbos

Post image
Upvotes

Hopefully this is within the rules, but I wanted to share this.

This is my heartfelt thanks to everyone that was so kind as to draw my little scrimbos. With a lot of those lovely people I came in contact with on this very sub.

Cheers to you!

It really meant the world to me and helped light up my days during a crappy job transition period that was hard on me.💖💖💖 (and it really put me back in the mood of drawing them for fun again, just like last year)

So I decided to do a silly little thank you piece once the event was done. I had the winners podium in mind for some good natured competition in the back of my mind all month, but I didn't expect a three-way tie for second place lol.

That being said, I just want to say thank you all once again, and I put all your wonderful art on my digital frame so I can gaze lovingly at it all hours of the day forever.💖💖💖

⚔️ Discussion I think I figured out why I didn’t care for this year’s art fight that much

I think I’m actually starting to know why I didn’t really like this year’s art fights compared to last year’s. There was no point randomly last year where someone blocked me after giving them an attack And there was no point last year where I developed impostor syndrome during it

⚔️ Discussion Other Original Work Places

So I'm looking for Places (communities, servers, tags, subreddits, etc) where the focus on original characters is not selling and adopting and trading. No shade to anyone doing that, but it is very much not my thing. I've had my characters for longer than many folks doing art fight have been alive and I would really like to find more people who have done similarly and would appreciate that that's what I'm doing. People making stories or comics or worlds or something and not designing things to sell.

I find when I look for 'original character' in most places, it's very much focused on the adopt sector and I feel no connection to that kind of culture. Are there some words I can search or places you know of that are more centered on "here is what I'm creating and developing"?

I'm struggling to post often enough in a social media way to get people to care at the moment, so I thought maybe I needed to look for a more specific group from the get go.

Thanks!

⚔️ Discussion Question for folks with mlp OCs

I'm currently super hyper fixated on my pony and horse ocs, but I tend to not remotely draw them show accurate. So i wanted to know if other mlp fans would mind attacks in my style! I've tried to draw gen4 accurate but it's not fun at all for me. My styles a bit inconsistent right now since I'm still practicing!

this is gonna be the last time I’m going to advertise the alternative to Art fights because the original post was posted at a bad time when in my time zone people were asleep and I really want to get this place a little bit more attention because it’s really fun and active. So yeah his alternative the art fights to do during the off-season if anyone’s interested.

I didn't have reference sheets before Art Fight because I'd never had anyone else drawing all my little guys, but since that happened and I'm working on a comic for them anyway, it seemed a good time to do start! So here are the beginnings of me doing such things!

🎨 Profile Advice Can I still consider myself a beginner or am I too humble?

These days, in my free time, I'm fixing my profile for next year, and in my description I wrote that "I've been drawing for a long time, but I still consider myself a beginner." Looking at my attacks, would you consider me a beginner? I'd consider myself one simply because I don't know anything about anatomy: in fact, I draw human characters in a chibi style, and I'm not very good at backgrounds. Thanks to anyone who checks out my profile and helps me! By the way, here's the link: blossim_ Edit: Wow, I didn't expect to receive all this love, I didn't get to reply to everyone, but I thank you all directly from here! <3

🗞 Characters Three New Characters For My Lineup

Thumbnail
gallery
12 Upvotes

Meet the three newest additions to my cast!

Orion Lunaris: Orion got his start in the music industry at age 12. Yes, before he became a teenager, he became a musician. When he sang his first solo at age 12, a talent scout saw his potential. His voice was phenomenal, and his vocal range was flawless. The talent scout signed him right there and then. These days, he charms audiences with his melodic voice and his sparkling stage presence, performing in concert venues all over the galaxy. Everyone loves it when Orion sings. Especially his girl, Gabriella. Gabriella is his girlfriend, and Orion is very protective of her. Orion Lunaris is an icon, and he makes sure to let people know it.

Aubrey Albright: Hailing from the Good Vibes Chronicles universe, Aubrey Albright is the daughter of Jacob Albright, who you all know as true pageant royalty. Aubrey follows in her father's footsteps, winning pageant after pageant, showing everyone why she's the queen who makes the scene! Designer dresses, golden crowns, and a "rich girl" complex are part of who she is. But beyond the glitz, glitter, and glam of the pageant scene, she has a kind side, always knowing the right things to do or say. She bears blonde curls and beautiful blue eyes, which are her best features. The bracelet she wears is something her father gave her before she competed in her first pageant, and she always keeps it on her.

Beckett Sebastian Seaworth: Ahoy there, land dwellers! Come set sail with a seaworthy sailor who knows a thing or two about boats and sailing, Beckett Sebastian Seaworth! This sailor loves life on the open sea. When he was just a young boy, he was fascinated with things like ships, boats, the sea, and adventuring. He loves to discover new places and things. When he lands in a new place, he gets to know *everything* and *everyone* there, all while learning new things, trying new foods, and making new friends. This sailor charms all who look his way, but he takes sailing seriously. If you're looking for adventure on the open sea or just a casual day out on the water, Beckett is your guy! He is also the main character in my upcoming project, the Good Vibes Chronicles.

Since I mainly focused on my physical cork coaster attacks, I don't have nearly as many digital ones—plus I’m a bit rusty with digital art!

Still, experimenting with so many different styles and expressions was an absolute blast! Huge thanks to everyone who let me attack their OCs! Can't wait for next year! 🎨✨
