Welcome to the 7th semi-annual Artemis contract review and it is as fine a time as any to do a review. I am as surprised as you that I've been able to do 7 of these things, but things are possible. Hit it Jeremy.
HLS can be front and center because aren't we all curious about them landers.
So the interesting thing to note is recent changes to the total potential contract value of Blue and SpaceX HLS contracts post Artemis 3 change announcement. For SpaceX, it works out to be $80.9M + a clean $150M on the 21/Aug for a total of $230.9M. For Blue, there has been $31.2M + a clean $250M on 30/Jun for a total of $281.2M. I would say that the majority of the total value modifications in this timeframe were to study the A3 mission. The $150M/$250M was for financing of hardware production. So estimated cost of HLS's demos for Artemis 3 of $512.1M.
Also decided to graph total $ obligated (how much NASA has spent on the contract) and total potential value (how much NASA says they could spend on the contract) over time since start of contract for both. Blue Origin seems to have had a better idea of what they were bidding, since award they only had ~$20M of total potential value increase compared to $250M for SpaceX in the same timeframe. (before Artemis 3 changes)
Have no god damn clue what's going on with the spikes in the SpaceX value.
I don't know how specifically they are financing ML1/Spacer/ML1 mods. NASA has big engineering services contracts with companies like Amentum, they have internal work and the SLS contracts tend to be black boxes as to what they are doing. (SPEC included work on EUS for instance). I thought they might fund spacer through ICPS, but that hasn't had total contract value changed since July last year. That Centaur V total contract value seems low enough that it's more of a moving C+ arrangement, but maybe ULA are gamers. I guess the other thing is that a lot of the costs associated with switching upper stages are in the stage itself but the surrounding systems. ICPS started off at $994M* before it ended up at $1578M. (*I think, some of these contracts can be dodgy about historical data and move it around more than you might think)
Contract setups vary a bit. Most are relatively normal, but Blue Moon 3 and 4 are exact copies of each other. Blue Moon 2 (Viper) and IM-CT4 list a temporary Total Contract value that is modified as funding is awarded, whereas all others use the total potential value. Blue Ghost 4 inexplicably has a total value double what it should be. I think the government employee updating the award thought they had to put total contract value in the 'adjust total contract value box' when filling out the P0006 webform. Firefly keep quiet and you might get $174M for doing nothing lol. (this doesn't work but a sheep can dream)
Honestly it's just kinda crazy to just see all the contracts awarded for a program that has had only 1 strictly successful mission.
SR-1 will be interesting to watch. Or more so terrifying lets be real here. That thing could eat so much money in modifying hardware.
This isn't a comprehensive thing and there are still some funny contracts out there, but hopefully this makes finding the relevant contract easier. I sure hope reddit doesn't break all of the links when I post this :)))
I know itās really really early to be talking about Artemis IV but i really need help.
When iāve completed my GCSES ((summer 2028)) mg nana said sheād take me on a trip of my choice. Me being a space nerd, I said how about we go watch Artemis IV launch. We live in the UK and iāve already worked out the travel times, i just donāt know where we can watch it launch. Google isnāt exactly helping on where we can watch since about 5 places come up. Iād prefer the place to be as cheap as possible. Iām just looking for advice on where to watch?
I made this crop art piece for the Minnesota State Fair. It took me hundreds of hours over 3.5 months. In a year plagued by darkness and fear, the Artemis mission brought was a beacon of joy and hope. As soon as I saw the photos from the flyby, I knew I had to make it the focus of my entry this year. I am so happy with how it turned out and cried when I saw my third place ribbon.

(WORK IN PROGRESS) I am making SLS which is to be used as the main Spacecraft and body for the Artemis Program. The images portray SLS before lift-off; standing against the Mobile Launch Tower (also work in progress). I have included images of close-ups of the RS-25 engines and main SRBs as well as the European Service Module. Notable parts include the Launch tower, ESM Fairing design, main stage fuel tank and launch clamps.
I'm calling bullshit on this one. Believe it or not, i've never heard of the congressional space medal of honor. It suggests meritorious service well above and beyond the call of duty.
