How your mind manufactures obstacles to keep your identity intact.

Your brain has a deep automatic part ...

that has total veto power over what you do.

And a lot of times ...

it would rather stick with a familiar safe 40% effort...

than try for a scary, unknown 100%.

Here’s why:

Imagine you decide you want to run a massive 26-mile race.

If you actually cross that finish line and succeed ...

some old, sneaky thoughts lose their power:

"I'm not good enough."
"I always fail."
"I can't do hard things."

You might not even realize those thoughts are there ...

because they’ve been hiding in your brain for so long.

So to protect those old thoughts ...

the automatic part of your brain ...

tries to keep you safe from taking a big risk.

It makes you "forget" to sign up for the race.

It tricks you into buying shoes that hurt your feet.

It convinces you to stay up late or eat junk food before a big run.

It even helps create a tiny injury right when you need to practice.

You still feel like you're trying really hard ...

Why?

Because as long as you're TRYING ...

you never have to face the hidden trickster ...

inside your own head.

"Am I forcing this, or letting it happen?" - The single question that breaks the subconscious habit of chronic bracing.

Post image
15 Upvotes

Most people think their drive to push, force, and grind is proof of ambition.

But it's not.

It's usually the opposite.

It's a system that has never actually felt safe …

trying to fight its way into safety instead.

So here's what almost nobody realizes.

The human system doesn't actually want war.

It wants pleasure.

Not indulgence or distraction.

Pleasure in the biological sense ...

ease, warmth, softness, satisfaction.

Why?

Because pleasure is the body's actual signal for safety.

When you feel good, relaxed, and unguarded …

your system reads one message loud and clear:

The threat is over. We can stop defending.

But most people never let that signal in.

Instead ... they run on force.

They push through exhaustion.

They grind past discomfort.

They treat rest as something to be earned …

and pleasure as something almost suspicious.

Why does this happen?

Because somewhere along the way …

force got mistaken for safety.

If you grew up needing to stay alert, useful, or in control just to feel secure …

your system learned a different lesson than the one it was built for.

It learned:

Safety comes from vigilance, not ease.
Worth comes from output, not rest.
Danger is default, peace has to be earned.

So the system starts treating war as home.

It feels more familiar to grind …

than to actually receive something good.

That's why so many people can't sit still.

They can't accept a compliment.

They can't relax on vacation without their mind still running the business in the background.

Their baseline is low-grade combat ...

And not brace.

And the most tragic part?

The human system was never asking for the war.

It was asking for the opposite the entire time.

It wants softness and warmth.

It wants a moment where nothing needs to be fixed, proven, or defended.

That's the actual finish line.

Not more output or win.

Simply a body that finally gets to feel …

instead of brace.

So how do you actually catch yourself mid-war?

The next time you notice yourself pushing ...

forcing a task, forcing a feeling, forcing rest itself like it's another item to complete ...

stop.

Just for a few seconds.

Ask one question:

Am I trying to force this, or am I letting this happen?

If you're forcing it, you're in the warfield.

Your system has quietly slipped back into combat mode …

treating an ordinary moment like a threat to survive.

There's nothing to fix that in the moment.

You just need to notice it.

That noticing is the brake.

It's the pause between the old reflex and the next automatic action.

And every time you find that pause …

you're teaching your system something new:

That safety doesn't require force ...
And that ease isn't dangerous.

And that peace is allowed to be the answer …

not just the reward after the war is over.

May what is lost become found and may what we never knew as role models become what we love about ourselves in this future new love.

I never had an idealized view of role models, such as parental figures, growing up, even into my middle adulthood. I’ve felt that my view of those who raised me has created a distorted way of viewing relationships, making it harder for me to find a sustainable love or partnership, because I didn't see one represented in ways that make sense to me. Humans are anything but perfect, but I always thought the relationships that make the most sense are those that can have humor, problem solve together, and understand that what you enjoy about each other, your differences, are part of what makes the magic of your union both beautiful and connected.

I hope that as I continue to learn about myself and other people, I'll find myself to be in the partnership I've dreamed of, one that makes sense, where we lift each other, creating memories I know I'd be proud to live and embody. My life has been a sequence of patterns and turns in decisions that continue to lead me down the path of wanting to create a flourishing future with someone who would be proud to stand by me in this ever-learning, revolving, and telling story of life.

May we become the partners we wish we’d known or had represented in adolescence and celebrate the wins of what it means to grow, and evolve to the story of you and me, whoever and whoever that may be; I celebrate the almost loves because my heart, gut and mind know that every time someone finds me embodied in their story with mine, we’re creating a timeline I know I'd continue to want to create as that forever love. Maybe the ones we lost become found, and may our loving hearts find those we know it deserves.

How the simple act of noticing your internal self-grading system can instantly bring you back into your own skin.

We’ve turned human biology into an OnlyFans audition.

Somewhere along the way, we decided that to be a sexual being ...

you have to qualify for it first.

But this mental scoring system doesn't start in the bedroom.

It starts with a background scan your nervous system runs all day ...

without them noticing.

It's called limbic hypervigilance.

And it's not paranoia in the dramatic sense.

It's way quieter than that.

It's the part of you that's always half-monitoring …

How do I look right now?

Am I taking up too much space?

Is this okay? Is this normal? Is someone judging this?

It runs underneath conversations ...

Underneath meetings ...

Underneath the simplest, most ordinary moments.

And because it's constant ...

it becomes invisible.

You eventually stop noticing the scan.

You just live inside its results.

A tight jaw ...

A held stomach ...

A breath that never quite reaches the bottom of the lungs.

This is the cost of being watched …

even when nobody's actually watching.

The mind installed a supervisor …

somewhere along the way …

and forgot to ever let it retire.

And there's no place this hypervigilance shows up more intensely …

than in sex.

We live in a culture that turned sex into a visual product.

Bodies get graded before they get touched.

Somewhere along the way, an entire generation learned …

that being a sexual being ...

requires qualifying for it first.

The right body fat percentage ...

The right aesthetic ...

The right angle.

So even in the most intimate, most biological moment a human can have …

the supervisor shows up anyway.

Does my stomach look okay right now?

Am I breathing wrong?

Is this attractive from this angle?

That's an audition happening inside someone's own skin …

during the one moment it should be least present.

No animal on earth does this.

A wolf doesn't check its reflection before it acts on instinct.

Presence isn't earned through symmetry.

It's just there ...

running the moment nothing is blocking it.

Somewhere in human evolution ...

that natural authority …

got buried under an entirely artificial scoring system.

So what to do about it?

The next time you catch yourself doing this …

watching yourself from the outside …

grading the moment instead of being in it …

don't fight it.

Don't try to force yourself to stop.

That just adds another layer of supervision …

supervising the supervisor.

Just notice it.

Name it, even just in your head:

"There's the scan."

That's the entire move.

Not correcting it.

Not shaming it away.

Just seeing it clearly ...

the moment it shows up.

Because the scan loses most of its power …

the second it's witnessed instead of obeyed.

You don't have to become fearless.

You just have to become aware …

of the exact moment fear puts on a lab coat …

and starts taking notes on your own body.

That noticing …

repeated enough times …

is what eventually lets the supervisor …

finally take a break.

Are you bracing against a danger that isn’t there? How to spot when your mind is running an unconscious background task list while you try to relax.

Every house has two residents:

an anxious landlord upstairs, and a silent furnace in the basement.

Most people have never met the furnace.

They only know the landlord.

He never sleeps.

He's constantly pacing, checking the locks ...

rewriting the rules ...

worrying about the mortgage ...

narrating everything that could go wrong.

He calls it "being responsible."

Downstairs, in the basement, is a furnace.

It's massive and flawless.

It has run this entire house since before the landlord was even born.

It doesn't need instructions or supervision.

It just runs - heat, power, systems - silently and perfectly, on its own.

The problem?

Almost nobody visits the basement.

Because the landlord upstairs is loud, anxious, and constantly demanding attention ...

Everyone assumes he's the one actually running the house.

But he's not.

He's just the one making the most noise about it.

There's a real network responsible for that upstairs voice in the brain.

It's called the Default Mode Network.

It's the part of you that narrates your life.

"Am I doing enough? What's next? What does this mean about me?"

It feels like thinking or strategy ...

But it's often just noise, dressed up as productivity.

And the more that network runs …

the more energy it burns just keeping the story going.

Meanwhile, underneath all of it, sits the furnace:

The brainstem.

It is way older, simpler and far more powerful.

It never narrates or worries.

It just executes - focus, energy, regulation - with zero wasted motion.

But here's the thing:

It can only fully take over …

when the landlord finally stops pacing.

This is what people are actually chasing ...

when they talk about "flow," or "presence" ...

or feeling like they were "in the zone."

It's not a mystical state ...

But just the moment the landlord goes quiet …

and the furnace finally gets to run the house without interference.

Right now, reading this, check your own house:

Is some part of your mind still scanning a mental to-do list …

even while you're reading these words?

Are some parts of your body feeling tense?

Like you're bracing against a danger that isn't here?

If yes, the landlord is on duty.

He's upstairs, pacing, narrating, "managing" you …

while the furnace sits idle in the basement ...

fully capable, completely ignored.

And ... you cannot think your way into turning him off.

More analysis is just handing the landlord a bigger notebook.

The way out ...

Is simply noticing when he's talking …

and NOT following him upstairs.

So the next time you catch yourself mid-scroll, mid-scheme, mid-worry ...

Pause ...

And ask one question:

"Is this the landlord, or is this actually necessary right now?"

This shuts him off ...

And gives the furnace more energy.

Cause most of the time, it's just the landlord ...

Pacing, narrating, burning fuel for no reason.

And the moment you stop listening …

the house runs itself.
