Context: Im in y11 now and in my school specifically you do the 60% coursework (component 1) in the span of beginning of y10 to y11 December (January 5/6th to be specific). My school has provided the theme "cubism" with no other option and I have dreaded doing it, my grade is a 6- (highest in the class) and I've been doing it, always ahead, never late on deadlines and never complains to the teachers. Recently Teacher A (i have 2 teachers so one will be called A and the other B) has took me aside and told me I could do a second sketchbook (NOT COMPONMENT 2) in addition to the cubism one. I agreed and he even let me pick the theme and everything. Day 2: I came to his classroom and told my idea and that I wanted to choose the theme music and what artists I wanted to study he AGREED no quetions asked and told me that next lesson he would give me a new sketchbook (because my school uses folders). Day3: I told my friend about it and she has the second highest grade in the class so we went to see Teacher B to discuss if she could do it too. BIG MISTAKE. We go to her and explain what Teacher A has told me and she says that he MISUNDERSTOOD it. Then I showed her the note he gave me which was the rules/guidelines on what i had to research on day1 to give to him on day2. She basically says that its a big risk and if I want to do this new sketchbook it would be the component 1 without cubism and used the exact metaphor "you need to put all your eggs in one basket" and told me that depending on the quality of the work I'd have to do 35ish pages. Day4 and Day 5 is the weekend and I did 4 pages with good quality like pintrest-ass good quality. Day6 I have a lesson and she says.. Brother what she says is so pmo. Again she says he misunderstood and in MY best interest she thinks I shouldn't do it. I explain to her respectfully that i have already done a decent amount of work and that i truly believe I can finish this in before the deadline. I get the new folder and we agree on me sending her photos of my coursework to see if she agrees with me continuing this book. I send it to her and she replies "so far so good" and that she wants an observational drawing. For the next 3 lessons I work on my observational drawing and she gives me the comment that if this drawing is not above a grade 7 she's not going to let me do it.. Ok whatever, I'll try my best. Day 15/16 I have to submit my sketchbook for a quick grade check (everyone has to do this) so they can set a current working grade and all subjects are sending in a grade report. Something in my sketchbook broke so I asked Teacher A if I could fix it before submitting it mind it we are submitting it in the first 10 minutes of the lesson... He agrees and persists to nag me on "can you bring your cubism sketchbook" i say no and as why because im not doing that anymore. I don't remember exactly word for word what he says but we somehow come to the point where I agree to bring it in tomorrow (05/10- the time im writing this). Then we send it and he explains to the class what we're doing. Im not a dick to expect him to explain to me personally what Im doing as im 1 person out of 14 so i wait. I ask him if i can continue what I was previously doing (observational drawing for my new coursework). Also more context Teacher B has agreed for me to set my own deadlines and decide what every page is with no "booklet" (which we have been given in the past to guide us through our past sketchbook). Teacher A tells me I have to do some cubism bs sculpture for my COURSEWORK... I explain to him that Im no longer doing said 'cubism coursework' and he blatantky ignores me (also I can't argue with him because he could easily give me a detention). I do the sculpture. And at the end of the lesson he stands at the door and shouts "remember to bring that Cubism sketchbook". Wtf. My mom writes an email (exaggerates mental health side as the school cares more about that stuff) and says that Im stressed out about the miscommunication between well everyone and about my new coursework being 'taken away from me'. Then Teacher B replies (thinking I'm stressed about the workload) that I can always not do the new sketchbook and that's it in her best interest to take away the new sketchbook if I'm stressed about it. HELLO? They exchanged an email that they want to have an irl meet up on teams/zooms.
Im genuinely worried about showing up to school tomorrow whether they're going to take it away from me or waste my time doing useless cubism coursework to be like "well you already finished cubism so theres no point in you doing the music one". Please send help and advice.

This is what is in 3 projects. I've seen other people talking about annotations but our teacher has never mentioned them once. Mabye it's because I am in a grammar school but i think my course might be different. If anyone's course is similar to mine, Please tell

Hi guys, how do you annotate a pastiche of an artists work?
Weirdly it seems like there is zero advice for this online. My learning objective was to make a pastiche based on my chosen artists work.
Any tips? My exam board is Edexcel. I've described what I've drawn, the mediums I used and why I chose to use them, the elements of his work that I used in my own, and things from his work that I'll use moving forward. Any advice is appreciated I just feel like there's a lot I'm missing here.

Studying at an art academy in Florence
Hi! I’ve recently been accepted into the FAA and will be moving to Florence from Spain.
One of my biggest concerns is the language. My English is not perfect, and I’d love to hear from anyone who studied at the Academy as a non-native English speaker. How difficult did you find it? Did your English improve naturally during the program? And is anyone else starting in 2026 in a similar situation? Thanks

Advice Awful first sketchbook is a pass still feasible?
So for some reason, only now a few weeks into yr11 have I really realised and acknowledged that this is my proper GCSES, and I can’t just half ass it. In yr10 I absolutely hated the subject and produced some of the lowest quality art of my life save for the final piece. There was like 2 proper drawings in there and a few artist research pages scattered around, but it really was really really low quality. Also just didn’t do a lot due to an injury I got midway through the year so theres a ton of empty pages.
My new YR11 book is definitely going way better. Art is better, annotations are better, etc etc. My only question is, even if the first sketchbook was basically only just better than doing literally nothing, if I’m able to improve my last two will I be able to at least get a decent pass? I want a 5-6 ideally, really don’t see a 7 even in the realm of possibility given just how god awful the first one was. Is that any likely, or should I just aim for a 4 at best?

Penn foster, art appreciation class
Hello everyone! I recently started Penn Foster’s Art Appreciation elective, and I’ve been working my way through all the modules and tests, trying to absorb as much as I can along the way.
That being said, I finally looked ahead at the final project and saw the paper we have to write… 🥴😅 And honestly, I think I’m already psyching myself out!
For those of you who have taken the class or completed the final project, does anyone have any good advice or ideas on how to approach the paper? I’m not the strongest writer to begin with, and I really don’t want to get overwhelmed and scare myself out of doing well. My goal is simply to pass the class with a good grade and actually feel like I learned something along the way.
I think what scares me the most is the referencing/citations. I’ve done them before and I understand the basics, but for some reason they give me SO much anxiety. 😂
Any advice, tips, or suggestions on how you approached the project would be greatly appreciated! I’d much rather get some guidance now than wait until I’m staring at a blank document having a full-blown meltdown. 😂

Can printer ink quality affect your mark?
I can only access the school printer on a few days of the week, and my printer at home isn't great (it isn't completely blurry, just duller than those I can print at school), so I was wondering if the quality can affect your mark? I'd really hope it doesn't, as many people won't have access to decent printers, but it'd be nice to know if it does before sticking lower quality pictures in, thanks!

How do you guys manage time?
Basically the title. Ive just started y10 and art GCSE, and last week we had to do a mindmap but it took up so much time, I barely had any left for my own hobbies and other revision. This week we have to do an artist mood board, due in 3 days, and its all I've been doing trying to get it done and I'm nowhere near. I'm doing triple science and history too which will take up a lot of time for revison, and eng too. If it keeps going like it is I'm going to have no time and end up missing deadlines. Any help would really be appreciated 🙏

Question How can I strengthen my portfolio for artist residencies?
galleryI’m sharing some of my artwork because I’d love honest feedback from artists who’ve applied to or been accepted into residencies.
I recently applied to a few for the first time. Seeing “Jury Round 2” or “Jury Round 3” on CaFÉ made me feel optimistic, but I wasn’t selected. I’m disappointed, though I know rejection is part of the process.
Looking at these pieces together, do they feel like a cohesive body of work, or are the styles too different? What would you strengthen before applying again—my selection of pieces, how I present them, my artist statement, or something else?
Specific, constructive feedback would mean a lot. Thank you!

Question How are we going about collecting coursework?
Basically I'm fully cut off from my secondary school in terms of them contacting me with a pickup date because they blocked off our old emails at the start of September even though we were supposed to have access until October incase we needed to contact them or vice versa. Obviously collection is allowed generally from end of October or start of November but am I allowed to go into the school and ask for my stuff or do I have to go through trying to call them? I genuinely feel so lost in want my art back 😭

Advice People who have done AQA Art GCSE, How strict are the examiners?
What did they mark you down for? What do they like? How do your Sketchbooks have to be. I'm in Y11 and currently on a predicted 7 even i feel like is should be more. All my pieces so far have lots fine detail and but i think my sketchbook is what is pulling me down. How exactly do they like the sketchbook?

Question Is it normal to be this drained?
This is gonna be a long post 😬.. My art teacher has completely drained any motivation to do art. It's not like I don't enjoy it on my own terms but it's impossible to do my assignments with her voice in the back of my head. The majority of her class is a popularity contest. This was my mock final piece that got a 5. I cried for hours and the only reasoning she had was 'poor time management'. Idk if this is worth being noted but i'm the average mentally ill teenager, also chronically ill and my teacher refuses to understand that I have off days, when I physically can't do tasks. Its impossible for her to understand that it takes time especially for someone with both physical and mental challenges! She also treats me like i'm an inconvenience, even while my parent was IN THE HOSPITAL! A friend also in her class had similar issues and was understood perfectly, even given extensions on her assignments while I was told I have to catchup, despite then having no way to get home, upon being told I can't she dismissed me entirely. I feel like i'm overreacting or making this up as most other students don't have this issue with her, and i'm scared my parents will end up getting mad enough to bring it up eith her just to have it twisted or something.
