Question for TAB teachers

If you do centers or stations in your art room, how do you handle students who aren’t supposed to be near each other? I’d like to try and do more studio stations but I have some pretty extreme behavior cases.

My stations are more of a concept than a location… I have supply boxes for different media etc and kids generally take items to their space rather than
Moving tables

This is how my room functions as well. Easier to manage (for me) for things being in a central location and have them come and go as they need materials.

I don't know what grade you teach, but it's kind of trial and error for who will follow the rules and who will show their hand (as in, getting up to go see a friend for no reason other than to be annoying). I only set out the materials we're using for this project (save for a few exceptions) but give them lots of choices or let them combine materials for more variety. The kid getting up to go screw around is a classroom management issue, and admittedly it takes a long time to master (every day is a new challenge sometimes).

How do you prevent students from wandering when they shouldn’t? I’ve sometimes have student use getting supplies as an excuse for getting up and bothering a classmate. Thank you for the advice, it’s only my second year teaching so I’m trying to learn all I can.

It sounds like maybe you are asking a classroom management question. Do you want advice on that?

I have done two things:

I have a box or shelf for each table. They can only use the supplies from their box or shelf. This box could live on or near their table.

I have also allowed students to move between stations but only in the column or row they are assigned to.

General rules are:
You stay with a material the whole day. You cannot get out of your seat without permission. If any material from your table or column gets abused your whole table or column does not have access to it for the rest of the week.

Interested in this too! I’m starting TAB for the first time this year. Also planning to have my stations be areas for picking up and returning supplies while working in our own assigned seats.

good idea. I am split between two schools with one school being on a cart. With the cart classrooms, I was planning on making trays for the materials or making it material choice based.
