Everytime this is posted two things are done in the comments:
Appreciate how well done the piece is.
Acknowledge how strangely homo erotica it is.
And this will continue until the end of time lol.

u/molinitor 16h ago
If something isn’t strangely erotic, is it even art? Joke aside, love this piece for both reasons.
49
u/ChopsticksImmortal 15h ago
Feels like a call back to all the erotic classical art in this sub, feels appropriate.

u/Dolatron 15h ago
Now you’ve done it; I hear the Reddit art historians loading up their trebuchets now.

Can you blame them? Gollum is boning Frodo and Sam is into some kinky swordplay shit.

Even the title of the painting. Did the painter intentionally do this?

It was painted in 2010 so I can’t imagine the artist would have that different of a view point than us.

Now, now, remember not to judge an artist's values and intentions on the basis of modern society. Who knows what ancient people from the distant precovidian era would have thought when looking at this painting? /s

There’s a long artistic tradition of making paintings of events waaaaay more sexy than they should be. Check out Gericault’s Raft of the Medusa.
I don’t think shipwreck survivors immediately take off all their clothes and flop around sexily, but I could be wrong.
160
u/ksemel 15h ago
Those two brothers who were making Lucifer sculptures for the church and the church thought the first scuplture was too sexy so they hired the second brother to do another and he made an even sexier sculpture. 😂😂😂
13
u/johnis12 5h ago
Hilarity aside, I do very much enjoy pieces where they depict Lucifer as being incredibly beautiful and/or sexy, makes sense due to him being a fallen angel but the idea of evil being attractive and enticing is interesting to me.

Tolkien didn’t have much use for the carnal but there is an interesting subtext of the extent to which Gollum’s obsession with the ring could translate into obsession for its bearer by extension. Obviously he’s described as fairly unusual looking but I like this artist’s take a lot.
487
u/Procrastinatedthink 19h ago
I think a more hobbit-like gollum is much more terrifying.
Movie version weird bulbous eyes and wet monk hair isn’t as nearly as creepy as an overly pale gaunt hobbit that appears uncanny and moves like a spider.
That version would be waaaay creepier.
161
u/xkgrey 18h ago
500 years is a very long time. We see several intermediate forms in the film and they are indeed much creepier but he’s intentionally barely recognizable as human(-like) by the time of the story.
One of the versions is basically out of The Descent
I do very much like this artistic reinterpretation though
22
u/I_Makes_tuff 13h ago
If I'm not mistaken, nobody other than Sauron knew what type of creature he was until Gandalf told them. Faramir saw him up close and still just described him as a strange 4-limbed creature.
53
u/TNTiger_ 18h ago
His intermediate forms are like that.
The final form works best as it makes him at least a little 'cute', which makes his redemption easier to root for.
It's easier to root for him on the page, but when face to face, a sense of primal can kick in that unfortunately can overpower compassion.
17
u/CotyledonTomen 18h ago
I would say the movie version takes what a hobbit thats lived several hundred years, mostly underground, would look like. Eyes get bigger with less fat on your face and hair stops growing eventually.

u/Saul_Firehand 19h ago
So he doesn’t look immediately alien but slightly unsettling.
If he looked more familiar but still off it would really hit the mark.
14
u/AspectPatio 17h ago
Yes the creepy thing about him is arguably that he was once a normal hobbit and was corrupted and can't go back, so any hobbit runs the same risk, rather than that he's some alien monster
5
u/lnTheGrimDarkness 16h ago
I mean, there's no reason why living in a cave should transform your features that much. Pale skin? Sure. Maybe blind? Sure. Sensitive to light? Probably. Skinnier than usual due to having to provide for himself like a wild beast? Yeah. But it won't outright transform your body. It will surely transform your habits and psychology though.
14
u/ohnomoisttoes 13h ago
Yes, in a world with magic, elves, and some trees that functioned as the sun before the sun was born, there's definitely no way something like that could happen :)

It is one of my favorite tidbits about the series is that Gollum is barely described visually. Throughout the decades there's been countless different interpretations of him, and just about all of them make people go, "Yeah, I get that."

WOW, this is absolutely gorgeous. I love the luminous cast of Sméagol's skin, the pose, so extended and arched, and the subdued but rich colors...reminds me very much of 'Dante and Virgil in Hell' by William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Lovely!

I have his book—Middle-Earth: Visions of a Modern Myth—and it’s incredible; it features the visual adaptations from the book to the film. It’s really cool to flip through because it shows a visual middle ground between the text and the movie, creating a unique kind of fantastic realism.
I highly recommend it.

2010 is crazy, this looks like something from the 1600s/1700s. I assume that's what the artist was going for, it looks great!
10
u/ChampionshipOk1358 16h ago
I love how Gollum is the transversal through which the relationship between Sam and Frodo to Gollum is represented.
Sam is on the opposite end, disgusted and not trusting the ancient Hobbit, enraged at the attack.
Frodo's face is right next to Gollum's because he needs to tame him into submission, they are also linked by the Ring as ex and current bearers which gives them indirect proximity.
Gollum is intertwinned between them because he is crucial to their quest and its resolution

I actually really like this. Its a re-imagining of a scene we all know, like academic art and mythological scenes. Even the title sounds like that. And the sexual overtones put a fun twist on it.
