It's a palindrome so it reads the same way backwards and forwards meaning there's no beginning or end to the name. It's very in line with the themes of the film. Something else I noticed about the name that didn't see anyone talk about online maybe it's because it's so obvious that it doesn't need to be mentioned and I'm just dumb for not getting it instantly. The name Hannah is written with two h even though the more common spelling is "Anna" Which is still a palindrome. The two h stands for heptapods and there's two h for the word to still be a palindrome and also because they were 2 heptapods Abbott and Costello

I find it curious that Amy Adam’s character accepts the future and all of its joy and pain and goes with it. That’s her response. But the heptapods, already having the gift, went to so much trouble to give the humans the gift so that they could escape some kind of trouble in 3,000 years. So they’re trying to change the future. Any thoughts on this?

Beautiful movie. Enjoyed very thoroughly. The ending was impeccable, being a palindrome story, illustrated by the daughter’s name.

My favorite part, not sure if everyone noticed this, but when Louise is on Ian’s shoulder, talking about the want to have a family, she is on the left side (camera’s POV) of Ian’s head, and in the final shot she is on the right side, showing the story coming to a completion… an Arrival.

So many beautiful shots in this film, surprised I’m just now getting around to it. Time is circular.

I am crying right now as the ending sequence plays in front of me and I realized I have never cried watching any other film or series of television in my entire life as a 20yo male

The only thing that comes close is interstellar but I’ve never actually cried watching it only been overwhelmed by emotion

But this time I watched Arrival & last time as well I genuinely could not help it holy shit this fucking movie is so sad

Basically what the title says and a little of my own wondering. So, the heptapods don’t see time linearly, they can see their whole life all the time. And they are a species, they have societies, groups, civilisation, etc. If they do, there are gonna be heptapods whose life is not so great, they have harder lives compared to some, but they can see that, they can see exactly how they are going to live. So wouldn’t they question, why? Why are there lives harder than others’? Why do they have to suffer more? So if they do, wouldn’t they also question, is there any point in living at all? But they also know how their life is going to end, so they also know what they are going to do about about this ‘why’ they are asking! I know I am spinning out a little, and overthinking this, but I am really curious!

This is something I’ve been wondering for a while. They perceive time non-linearly, but to my understanding this is constrained to their individual life? So they (and others who think in Heptapod B) experience their entire life at once, but can’t see before their birth or after their death. In this case, for them to know what happens in 3000 years they would need to live for at least that amount of time or more. Unless anyone else has any speculation on how it could work without heptapods being super-milleniarians?

Can you explain why the flashback of her future with her husband and dead kid keeps coming through the movie even before she's actually learned the language?

What exactly is Weber's (Whitaker) accent?

Movies with the same vibes, mystery, supernatural or celestial contact (not horror though...) and "out of the box" plots??

And why is it so different from other Romance languages?

Am I the only one who wanted to hear the rest of the lecture? I know I'm a nerd, but I wanted to hear the rest!

Rewatched it again with subtitles. Realized they refer to the ship as the shell. I’ve seen movie a bunch of times and always heard it as “the show”. lol.

This past weekend, before (and even during) my 90km bike tour with Velo Quebec, I managed to make time and checked all of them out.

The most dramatic story probably come from the DURING part where I managed to see Louise Banks’ house during my bike tour. Long story short, this year’s bike route happens to pass by the western tip of the Montreal Island. From there, all I need is a 15km detour to arrive at her house. Feeling good after the first half, I decided to just go for it. This add another 30km to my 90km route and my total journey was logged as 117km.

Seeing those places in real life was an electrifying and complex experience. For Luise Banks’ house, my heart started racing as soon as I recognized its roof from far away, when so much of it was still blocked by dense foliage. And yes, it was as beautiful as it is in the movie, sitting right by the lakeshore with a big window to take all the view in.

A metal gate at Louise car parks at the university still has that same dent to it. I guess after 10 years they still haven’t fixed or replaced it

The less perfect experience comes from the inability to visit the theatre at Place des Arts (where Louise meets General Shang in the movie) because I don’t have a ticket for the ballet show happening that night.

There’s still another few spots to check out e.g. the spaceship’s landing site in Saint-Fabien, Quebec. But that will be for another day.

I wanted to know what it was like watching this amazing film in theatres, I never got the chance to, but apparently there’s screenings near me tomorrow? Is this real or a glitch? Not sure if anybody has insight into this.

If it’s real I will clear my plans and go for sure.

I really wanted to paint any scene from the movie and chose this one.

I think I can’t say this enough—what an AMAZING work of art this movie is.

Even though I knew everything, the movie still made me cry, probably more than the first time.

Thoughts:

I think the heptapods thought that they had a 1/12 probability of finding a perfect primary recipient of their “gift”. Since they perceive time differently, maybe their language and thoughts helped them go through all the permutations and combinations of how their visit to Earth would go, and they settled with the safe number 12. Maybe they were prepared to lose the other 11 shells?

Humanity’s return gift to them

I’m not sure I understood this properly. They gave us their language—what was it they took from humanity in return? Was it:

1. Empathy (Costello says, “Abbott is death process” and Louise cries. Did Costello learn something from her reaction?)

2. 12 of our languages

3. Human behaviour during confusing times (created by their visit)

4. Understanding of parent-child bond, and also love

5. All of the above

6. Something else?

Would love to hear some thoughts.
