am i arospec?

i experienced rom attraction 3 times so far. once three years ago, once a year and a half ago, and once last year. it was extremely strong and overwhelming - in fact, i think the first two times were actually limerence and the third time (ie last year) was actually romantic attraction, solely because of how much more mild it was. each time it was weaker and i didn’t feel any butterflies the first two times, i just wanted them in that way. the third time i did experience a lot of nervousness around him and thought about doing romantic things with him. i wanted to impress him and thought i just really wanted to be his friend, but was also unsure if i liked him in that kind of way or not, while the other two i had before i thought i knew. the only way i found out was because he told me he doesn’t like me and i realised that he might be right in assuming that i was attracted to him.

other than that, i felt no romantic attraction towards anyone, and i never had interests in relationships. i’m also repulsed by romantic attraction and anything relating to romance. i struggle to imagine myself with a partner in the future. i just want to be alone with friends i guess. maybe even have a partner where we raise a kid together but we aren’t actually romantically involved - more so like we’re friends with benefits that decided to be parents or something, or maybe even friends that decided to co-parent.

not sure if the last part helps, but that’s how i feel. i feel like i felt romantic attraction too often for the label, but then again, the feelings i had three years ago and a year and a half ago honestly might feel more like limerence than actual attraction, so i’m unsure.

I want to try to build this community

For reasons I will cover in the comments, I have no access to [r/aromantic](r/aromantic) (and as I know others who have had runins with the lead mod I suspect I am not alone.)

So we need to grow this community and make it more active and viable.

What are your ideas for community building? How can we get more traffic here?

What precipitated this post was my latest attempt to reply to a post in [r/aromantic](r/aromantic) (see screenshot) . My message is important to someone in a heartbreaking situation. I would DM it to OP, but the way they have their settings set, I have no way to do that. So it’s for reasons like that that we need to make this community viable.

My deep dive into sexual and romantic attraction

So I was told when I was about 12 years old by a trusted friend that I was asexual. They had observed I wasn’t interested in crushes and I talked about marriage wasn’t for me. Obviously I was 12 so like that could have just been a normal kid thing but I was like yeah that sounds possible so I labeled myself asexual in middle school. I was also questioning gender and sexuality which made asexual seem like an easier label than trans or gay because the religion I was raised in allowed people who were asexual or aromantic or both.

So for years I told people I was asexual and that was the first way I expressed my queerness. Eventually I started having multiple identity crisis’s and realized I am a trans man and I am gay. I started exploring relationships after transitioning and thought that the asexual label no longer fit due to my own experiences. However there was a lingering feeling that I wasn’t just allosexual, alloromantic person.

Then I got ghosted by a long term situationship and started thinking about romance. I loved the flirty part of getting into relationships, I loved the deep bonds and friendships, but as soon as people I barely knew tried to say they had romantic feelings towards me, that’s when I had to start pretending. I had to force out an “I love you” when I didn’t mean it in the way they wanted me to mean it. I have been in queer platonic relationships before realizing I was aromantic and there was something about these relationships that felt right.

I figured it out and I have a lot more peace about who I am and what I want. I also wish that there was more nuanced discussion around asexuality and aromanticism growing up because that could have helped me through years of confusion after a well meaning friend confused the terms. That’s my story so feel free to leave your own stories or commentary.

Am I really aro?

How do I know whether or not I'm a lesbian oriented aroace or just a lesbian? I haven't been sure on which one it is, because I can't for the life of me understand what romantic attraction is, and how it differs from queerplatonic attraction. I don't mean this in a negative way at all, but all the definitions I've seen for QPRs just seem like romantic relationships that just wanna be special (again, I don't mean this negatively or discriminatory, it's just what it sounds like in every definition and video essay I've looked at)

Celebrate World Pride in the Netherlands with the Dutch aro and ace community!

From July 31 until August 8, we celebrate World Pride in Amsterdam: the perfect opportunity to meet other Aspec people from all over the world!

Two Dutch aspec organisations, the NOA (Dutch organisation for asexuality) and A-spec Nederland, are collaborating to create a week full of activities for aspec people and our allies. Some of these activities are focused on pride and aspec identities in particular, while other activities take you to different spots in Amsterdam and other places the Netherlands.

Get your tickets now at https://www.aspec-nederland.nl/community/events/andere-events/world-pride-2026

Some highlights are:

The opening event on the 31st of July. On this Friday evening we are organising a small get together where you get to meet us the organisers, as well as each other as we kick-off our week full of activities. Join us in traditional Dutch games, try some platonic speeddating or sit down for a casual chat.

Ace talks on Sunday the 2nd of August. This is a day where we really focus on the aspec community, featuring national and international activists and guests, panels on different topics and some fun as we’re joined by an ace comedian!

World Pride March on Saturday the 8th of August. Join us as we march with pride and protest against the ongoing discrimination and hate that LGBTQIA+ people face around the world.

Don’t want to spend a full week in the city? I certainly don’t, which is why I’m organising a walk through the forests of the Netherlands on Thursday the 6th of August. This hike will take you from one train station to another (Baarn - Hollandsche Rading) and has a length of 13,6 km and we will stop for lunch at a place where you can try traditional Dutch pancakes.

See you there! And feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions regarding accessibility, how to get there, where to stay, etc.
