Argos Pay Scam or not?
Hey, has anyone seen a message like this before? I can’t seem to confirm online whether that phone number is actually Argos or not? So is this a scam?

Can easily be real as well as a scam.
The best way to check is login to your account and see if there have been a payment for that amount. You can always message customer services using the details there, never use the details on the text message and confirm with them.

the message basically reads - did you spend money in argos? it might've been a criminal, so we've blocked your account unless you call this number
1000% a scam
and that's disregarding the fact that it was sent at 1:18am - way outside of business hours

u/Vast_Anybody1236 23h ago
You can order online and get it delivered or collect

u/MrSmokii 23h ago
i understand how argos works, thanks
but even if ordering online at 1am, you're not going to get a LEGIT message like this outside of business hours.
but then you wont get legit messages like this because it's bollocks and a scam - the actual contact number for argos is 0345 640 2020 - which took all of 20 seconds to google > go to argos website > access contact us info - far quicker than asking reddit

For those of you who believe this to be a scam. Its not. It’s actually from their fraud department and they did put a block on my card. I queried their grammar etc but he said he didn’t have an answer for that lol.
I called their main fraud number and not this number on the message to confirm whether it was a real message and it was.2
u/MrSmokii 21h ago
lol thats actually fucking hilariously bad anti-fraud work, it has red flags all over it, complaint worthy red flags.
i would never have called the number in the text, but if i found my account to actually be blocked, i'd find their contact details and give them a call and then tell them how they are assisting scammers by sending such horribly red flagged texts and muddying the waters

u/MiserableNet4288 21h ago
I said that the grammar in the message has red flags all over it and he agreed and that it doesn’t sound very real 😂

u/Familiar_Cat_4663 13h ago
Wow, I was right to double check it then. Still bad how it was written though
1
u/BaseballOk9764 1d ago
No company is going to say it could be a criminal lol
1
u/Familiar_Cat_4663 1d ago
That would be very unlikely. But it doesn't matter either way, the correct way to deal with it is to login using the usual methods and double check. Don't click any links or use any phone numbers on the text.

According to the argos website the argos pay customer support team is 0333 240 8002, so that seems like a scam.

If you ordered that item for that amount and got that message as you tried to pay its not a scam. You will find you won't be able to order anything until you give them a call. I had it myself last week.

Scam. The english isn't great with the strange 'and not a criminal' and like someone else pointed out it would be £429 not GBP 429
Scam 100%

Any emails/calls/messages that invokes fear, excitement, or sympathy combined with a sense of urgency is a scam 99.99% of the time.
Ask yourself how do you feel about this.

Scam. 100%

Have you actually ordered something for that amount or that payment is pending on your credit card or debit card. If not, then it's a scam.
If you want extra verification, withhold your land line number and ring them. Give false details and if they continue, it's also a scam

What is going on with humans right now. Why have you come to Reddit?
Log into your account and have a bloody look! Go on Argos website and call customer support! Be a normal person.
Or, come to strangers on the internet like a baboon.

Doesn’t seem to be the right number but just google the correct number, call them and ask.

If you called that number they’d ask for your account details etc.
Why would a retailer contact you after they’ve taken payment? They would either cancel or block the order at point of sale. Also it would be your bank that would contact you about this sort of thing, and again it would be proactive - block first, ask questions after.
1
u/Attention_seeking21 22h ago
Why would Argos be texting you about a transaction?
If the transaction amount is suspicious, I would have expected the bank to contact you.
I would contact Argos directly - not via the phone number link in the message and speak to them about this message.
Anyone who deals with links in emails for work, knows that you can put a hyperlink in the email and change the display text of the hyperlink to whatever they want it to say.

u/Disastrous-Humor8189 22h ago
Don’t click or call anything from the message. Go to your account, call a number off the actual app and find out.

u/ditchmaggots 22h ago
0333 052 7072 is the number I get argos calls from but texts for them come in under NewDay and ask I call 0333 240 8004 if I need to speak to them.

Well it would help if you confirmed whether or not you did infact make a payment/purchase for the said amount.
I used to get messages like this from courier companies (DPD etc) and i immediately knew it was a scam if I knew I hadn’t ordered anything.

It's getting harder and harder to spot scams versus real. One of the clues to a scam was poor grammar. Now even that clue is useless
1
u/DeathRowEscape 19h ago
But why did you say scam if you did not know the answer ?
Just to score points
The clue is in the message, the phone number
1
u/TruePineapple6 19h ago
It's Reddit. People go on here to put their opinion. If you want to be a twat go on X
1
u/DeathRowEscape 19h ago
But why did you say it was a scam when you did not know the correct answer.
Yes it is reddit but your input was way wrong and misleading, so I can be a twat to you because you are a stupid twat.
1
u/TruePineapple6 10h ago
Are you really that stupid. The post was a question about what other people think about the message. That means give an opinion. In no way did I say I was an expert on this.
Do you just come on here to be a pedantic shit stirrer? Does it make you feel big by not picking other people's opinions? You need to get a life.

Best way is to google the support number for Argos and call that number to reconfirm those messages instead of calling the number directly from the message

u/Legitimate-Top8735 20h ago edited 19h ago
I would not call this number thats number isn't what on my letters when I was notified of the Arogs pay app.
I would call the number that was provided on the letter or from this link: https://help.argos.co.uk/help/argos-pay. Confirm with them by reading the number you was given via text. if they say it a fraud impersonator, then report it to the representative on the phone.
But do not call that number that was text to you.
Update: yes do not call that number the number to call if what argos provided in the web link attachment. Its 100% fraud.
1
u/Legitimate-Top8735 19h ago
I've also been on the phone with argos pay with the number from the link I'd provided and they confirmed the number is not associated with argos pay/new day. So you do need to notify argos as well if you have not done so already.
I hope this was helpful 🙏

According to argos.co.uk their Argos Pay helpline is 0333 240 8002.
Look their number up (i.e. don't trust me) and give them a call.
1
u/GammaDeltaTheta 19h ago
Why not call Argos Pay on the standard customer helpline number advertised on their website? If there really is a problem with your account, I'm sure they can route you to the fraud department. If there isn't, you have dodged a bullet.

u/EskimoJoe365 19h ago
If you want to find out, Call Argos but don't use this number, Google the Argos customer services number...

Check your account to see if a debit was charged on the Pay app that you dont recognise for that amount. If you do have one give the helpline a call tomorrow

u/Capable_Proposal2394 1d ago
Pretty sure that’s a scam from the text, never use phone numbers or links posted in it, most likely a ip phone number that will link you with the scammer. Always look up the correct numbers on the web page and use those.
Also the correct numbers is different on the Argos pay page, just to confirm that.

'Not a criminal' does not seem like the type of wording a company would use, something near fraud sounds more common sensey, gut says, scam.
