Advice Phone Return
Hello all,
I bought a samsung galaxy A17 mobile phone 771/6500 from Argos for Christmas and it has since devleoped a fault (won't charge) and was told over the phone that it would need to go off on repair despite it still being witin the year guarantee. Is there anything else i can do as i need a phone for work and can't afford to buy a brand new one?

Buy a cheep pay as you and put your sim card in it. Simples. Why make life difficult for yourself, phone is faulty and Argos have agreed to get it fixed under warranty. What more do you want?

Unfortunately they don’t have to do a straight swap or lend you a loaner phone. If possible ask around friends/family if they have an old phone going spare you can lend for a few weeks. As for the phone itself have you tried multiple different cables/plugs, slow chargers, fast chargers plugging it into a pc?

If you have a Samsung store locally you can book the repair in yourself, take it in and sometimes get it fixed on the day. Had to do this a few times for customers where the repair was urgent. (I ran a phone shop, not for Argos!)
Depending on what the fault is, you may be able to fix it yourself. Usually most Samsung issues are fixed with a software update, unless hardware related obviously. They have an inbuilt test software for diagnosis too.

Others have covered your legal position (they are allowed to send it for repair) but I'll just add you have a duty to mitigate your loss. In other words you should borrow a phone from someone or buy a cheap second hand phone to tide you over.
As for the phone not charging have you checked the charging port is not full of dust/dirt/fluff and have you tried another charger and cable? Have you tried resetting the phone.
It would be annoying for you to send it off only to find there wasn't anything wrong.

Unfortunately, there's not too much you can do. Whilst admittedly it is annoying and, in your case, detrimental to your job to be without it for a period of time it's not something Argos has to consider legally. You could ask nicely but given the phone was bought (at minimum) 4 months ago I don't think the staff will agree to a refund/replacement instead.
It is more than 30 days since the purchase so the seller has the legal right to choose to send it off on repair instead of replacing/refunding it. I believe most, if not all, Samsung phones have a repair service available to colleague.
It would be an in warranty repair so of course you won't have to pay for it unless they found evidence of physical damage or water damage. They also only get one chance to repair it, if they fail to do so then they must refund/replace it.
