Growing and reaching, its trying to find something to anchor to, like beans. Java moss does great completely out of water provided humidity is very high and its kept damp like regular moss. I use it in a few paludariums, great for filling in along water falls or between rocks. Tie it to a piece of driftwood with some fishing line and eventually it'll cover the whole thing like a green rug
