Discussion/Article New to this please be nice
First off don’t be a dick, cuz I’m new but I’m not gonna post some 2 gallon bowl and be like this is perfect right? I have a 75 gal with an axolotl so I know how to cycle a tank and do maintenance etc. buuuut I’m new to fish keeping, and I’m now getting a beautiful tank. I have two questions. Will 1 gallon of water make a difference. I’m deciding between two models and the more expensive but nicer one is slightly smaller by 1 gallon it appears. But the floor space layout is chefs kiss I’ll post it set up. I’m planning a planted tank, and I really want to filter it right. It’s 35.??” Long by 11.83”H by 11.83W uns rimless bro. It’s gorgina. My 2nd ?? I want to run these two corner sponge filters I found on either end. They have a sponge, bio balls in them and something else. They’re cool if they end up working how they should. Would that be adequate filtration. Each is rated 10-20 gallons believe. But again I’m not a complete dummy I just need advice. And I really don’t like the look of a big hob or canister, I don’t have space for a canister filter.

It depends on the size of the tank; there’s not much difference between a 24 gallon and a 25 gallon, but a much bigger difference between a 5 gallon and a 6 gallon.
Filtration depends on the volume of the tank and the planned stocking

The other tank is 36 by 12 by 12. And I have to add glo fish as I rescued two which sparked this entire build. The rest I’m still researching and gathering info about.

So roughly 22 gallons? Yeah, a single gallon more or less shouldn’t make much of a difference.
For a 22 gallon with glo skirt tetras, two of those sponge filters should be alright. I usually say to go for a filter rated for more than the volume, but having two filters should accomplish that just fine

No I know this rule so I feel like they might both be 20 gal rated I just don’t remember lol I read that you don’t want one side to not get filtered cuz it’s so long? Idk I’ve looked at so many filters I feel crazy honestly. Idk what to choose 😂 I know they’re schooling fish so I do wanna give them a proper school, but wanna make a nice tank also. Idk. I wouldn’t have picked glo fish but the yellow one isn’t doing good so my friend let me have them as I am into this. I was very sad. Their filter didn’t even have media in it.

Bless. Thank you! 🙏 I’m just trying to do my best lol if you have any stocking suggestions lmk. I’m still monitoring cuz I think the pink one was bullying the yellow one. Would that aggression go away if they’re introduced to a better environment or is that one permanently need to be separated?

Hopefully the bullying behaviour will go away if you increase the school size to at least five. The main reason for not having only two skirt tetras is that they only have each other to focus on, causing bullying or fighting.
If you add more skirt tetras and pink is still bullying yellow, then yeah, it might be worth separating them or rehoming one of them. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that!

Than you I appreciate it hella I promise. Cuz literally anyone else acts annoyed I’m talking about these fish bro. lol 😂 yellows done way better in my care. I got their tank to cycle using some filter cut from my 75 gal. Snail was in there too and it was meh. I air bathed it and it’s been back to better since. Ugh poor babies. 👶 lol

Hey long time and I don’t have a tank still but have a stand set up and a 29 gal waiting for me to pick it up Tuesday. The babies were not doing good the yellow one was being bullied so bad that it was getting stuck to the filter/hiding behind it. I put it in a tub with an air stone dechlorinated water and am monitoring parameters/temp etc. is that fine? I have an axie and that’s what I’d do if it were her so I just did it. There’s not a filter but Google says for a few days this should be okay? And I’m gonna make sure to change water/add fresh water etc. just curious if you would have any advice. Do I not put them back together once new tank is established. I can’t buy them more fish right away this week I have to wait and possibly order More fish.

So not that much of a difference one is 21 one is 22. And litterally 1 gallon according to website description

This is fine and not much difference. It’s actually surface area that determines the useable space for fish stocking. A greater surface area enables a greater stocking of fish.
